This index measures the relative affordability of Caribbean islands by comparing hotel rates and airfare in high season.

These are the nine cheapest Caribbean islands to visit.

Cozumel

This small island off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is known for its white sand beaches, colorful marine life, and the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio. While you can fly directly to Cozumel from numerous U.S. airports, including Houston, Denver, Chicago, and New York, you can often save hundreds of dollars by flying to Cancún instead and then taking a ferry to Cozumel from nearby Playa del Carmen. The ferry ride takes approximately 45 minutes and costs around $28 for a round-trip ticket.

Flights to Cancún from most major U.S. airports can be found in the $300-$400 range regularly throughout the year, with many fares falling below the $300 mark.

You’ll likely find cheaper hotel nightly rates between August and November. (Note that this falls within Caribbean hurricane season.)

Jamaica

• Be flexible with your dates—most airlines do not operate daily flights to the Caribbean, so you can find better schedules and deals by being open to traveling on any day of the week
• Travel during the Caribbean’s off-season, June through November. However, be aware that this is hurricane season, and purchase travel insurance to protect your trip.

Shark Attack Facts

Shark attacks last year were slightly above the five-year annual global average but still within a reasonable year-to-year variation, according to the International Shark Attack File. This database is maintained by scientists at the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida and measures shark attacks over the years, dividing them into unprovoked and provoked incidents, broken down by country and fatal vs. non-fatal. Keep in mind that your risk of being killed in a shark attack is miniscule—approximately 1 in 4,332,817.

Shark Safety Tips: How to Avoid Attacks

Sharks aren’t out to get you—in fact, they aren’t really interested in humans at all. Most attacks occur when a shark mistakes a human for a seal or other food source, so you want to avoid looking like a snack in the ocean. To avoid attacks, follow these shark safety tips:

• Swim, surf, or paddle in groups, as most shark attacks target a solo person.
• Stay close to shore in case you need help, but also know that sharks often hunt in shallow water.
• Avoid being in the water at dusk or dawn, as these times are when sharks are more active and visibility is low.
• Don’t make yourself ultra-visable: Sharks are attracted to contrasts. The International Shark Attack File scientists discourage wearing shiny jewelry (which can resemble fish scales), entering murky water, wearing bright-colored clothing, or showing off tan lines.
• Do not enter the water near fishermen, as the sharks may be attracted to the bait.
• Keep dogs out of the water.
• Avoid areas near sandbars or steep drop-offs, which are where sharks tend to congregate.
• Do not swim near seals or large schools of fish.
• Try to avoid erratic movements, flailing, or splashing in the water.
• Always listen to lifeguards and heed all signs and warning flags at a beach.
• Check shark activity in your area before entering the water.

Do Shark Deterrents Work?

There’s no shortage of products out there that claim to be able to protect you from a shark attack. You can purchase bracelets or even electric devices if you want to feel safer in the water. But according to Tyler Bowling, Manager of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History, these products are not effective 100 percent of the time: “Many of the shark deterrent devices on the market have been shown to have an effect on larger species such as white and tiger sharks. Additionally, these products are not tested on a large number of species. So what deters a tiger shark might not deter a cookiecutter shark and so on.”

How to Survive a Shark Attack

Most shark bites are accidental—the shark has mistaken a human for food and will let the victim go after the first bite. If the shark continues to attack, here’s what to do:

• Fight back by hitting the shark in its most sensitive areas (the eyes, snout, or gills).
• Get out of the water as soon as possible, as a shark may return for a second attack.
• When swimming away, keep your movements as smooth and calm as possible to avoid attracting the shark’s attention again.

Look to the Gulf of Mexico for ultra-soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and surprisingly cheap beach vacations. The following Gulf Coast beach destinations are still unmarred by development, with opportunities for adventure, culture, great food, and, yes, even reasonable prices. Whether you’re looking for cheap beach vacations in Florida or other lesser-known states for tourism, this list of hidden and affordable beach destinations on the Gulf Coast will satisfy your desire for sun and sand—without breaking the bank.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

The hidden beach destination Floridians escape to, Anna Maria Island has somehow managed to keep condo towers, fast-food chains, amusement parks, and glitzy mega-resorts off its shores. In fact, no construction on this seven-mile-long barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast is more than three stories tall, and 60 percent of its land is an open beach. And it’s affordable, especially in the summer. You can rent vacation homes with water views and pools for under $1,000 per week and get seafood entrees at beachfront restaurants for less than $20.

“My trip to Anna Maria made me feel in a nostalgic sense what beach vacations must have been like 20 or 30 years ago,” says Tim Leffel, author of Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune, who visited the island with his family. “It has something other destinations have lost. It’s an old-fashioned place where you can just relax and hang out on the beach with your kids, without arcades and other distractions.”

While doing nothing is the island’s prime pastime, there are plenty of options when you want something to do. You can snorkel, kayak, or fish in the Gulf’s clear waters, or explore the island’s three small communities: Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, and the town of Anna Maria. A free trolley runs up and down the length of the island, making it easy to check out the island’s boutique shops or restaurants. For dining, you can try affordable local favorites such as the Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe, which is known for its all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5.99, and Star Fish Company, whose dockside restaurant serves up the local catch at surprisingly cheap prices.

Where to stay: Most accommodations on Anna Maria are vacation rentals or small condo resorts. TripAdvisor (SmarterTravel’s parent company) has Anna Maria Island rentals priced well below $1,000 per week. If you’d prefer to stay at a hotel or condo resort, reasonably priced options include Tradewinds Beach Resort and Pelican Post.

Getting there: A pair of bridges connects the island to the mainland. Anna Maria is about an hour’s drive from the Tampa airport and 45 minutes from St. Petersburg.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

When most Americans think of Alabama, sugar-sand beaches and palm trees aren’t the first things that come to mind. Many forget that Alabama’s heel nudges onto the Gulf of Mexico, its coastline a natural extension of the Florida Panhandle. In fact, this region, Gulf Shores, has miles of enviable waterfront real estate. The ignorance of others is a boon to the enlightened traveler.

The area has tried to make itself into a laid-back beach destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts, without the flash of theme parks, swanky resorts, and college spring break action. Most visitors come to spend a week relaxing on the beach with occasional forays out to visit the attractions. Nature lovers can explore Gulf Shores’ protected wilderness areas including the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Gulf State Park. Those interested in learning about Alabama history can check out Fort Morgan State Historic Site, a Civil War-era fort. Playing golf at one of Gulf Shores’ championship golf courses and fishing are also popular pursuits.

Where to stay: The vast majority of accommodations in Gulf Shores are rental homes and condos. TripAdvisor lists hundreds of options. I found weekly rates in August starting under $1,000.

Getting there: Gulf Shores is located about an hour’s drive from the airport in Pensacola, Florida, and about 90 minutes from the airport in Mobile, Alabama.

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

Just five miles east of Biloxi is the quiet coastal community of Ocean Springs, where small-town charm meets gorgeous white-sand beaches for an affordable Gulf Coast getaway. Outdoor activity options include stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The town is popular with art lovers, too, thanks to its many shops and galleries, as well as the Walter Anderson Museum of Art downtown.

The town is near the Davis Bayou section of Gulf Islands National Seashore, where visitors can go fishing, hiking, or bird watching in a protected marshland area. Admission is free.

Where to stay: There were dozens of vacation rentals on TripAdvisor under $1,000 a week for the dates I checked, and hotels are equally affordable. Most of them are familiar chains, such as the Holiday Inn Express Biloxi-Ocean Springs, but you can also stay in independent properties like the Gulf Hills Hotel & Conference Center.

Getting there: Ocean Springs is just a 10-minute drive from Biloxi and about 90 minutes from New Orleans.

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Tucked away on the Florida Panhandle between Pensacola and Tallahassee is a beach town where the waters are a perfect turquoise and the sand feels like soft, finely ground flour between your toes. Visit Topsail Hill Preserve State Park to try your hand at freshwater fishing, hike through well-preserved wetlands, or relax on quiet white sand beaches. You can hike or bike on the trails at Point Washington State Forest, which protects a range of coastal ecosystems.

You’ll find numerous shops and restaurants in the historic downtown area, including plenty of cheap eats. One local favorite is The Meltdown on 30A, a food truck specializing in grilled cheese.

Where to stay: Hotels in Santa Rosa Beach are relatively limited, with most visitors choosing vacation rentals instead. TripAdvisor has numerous listings, with summer rates starting below $1,000 a week. For budget hotels, your best bet is to stay in nearby Destin, which has a variety of affordable chain properties such as the Home2 Suites by Hilton Destin.

Getting there: The closest airports to Santa Rosa Beach are Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport and Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport in Panama City, each about an hour away.

Navarre Beach, Florida

Navarre Beach on Santa Rosa Island is a 12-mile stretch of pristine white sand, offering plenty of space to spread out and relax. If you’re looking for activities beyond sunbathing, you can go fishing on the pier, explore the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary, or go camping at the Navarre Beach Camping Resort. 

Navarre Beach offers a variety of activities perfect for families, as simple as building sandcastles on the beach, swimming in the gentle waves, or exploring the nearby Navarre Beach Marine Park. For actitivies away from the beach, the Gulf Breeze Zoo and the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge are short drives away and provide fun opportunities to see various animals. 

Where to stay: There are plenty of places to stay for around $1,000 a week, but for a truly unique stay, stay in an Airstream FC 30 at the Santa Rosa Waterfront RV Resort, just minutes from Navarre Beach across the Santa Rosa Sound. Springhill Suites by Marriott is directly on the beach and a great family option.

Getting There: Located about a half hour from Destin, Florida, and an hour and a half from Mobile, Alabama.

Caladesi Island State Park, Florida

One of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Caladesi Island State Park is accessible only by boat. This adds to the island’s charm, keeping the crowds thin and the atmosphere serene. The island is part of the Pinellas Suncoast Aquatic Preserve, making it a great spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. While kayaking or paddleboarding through the mangroves, you will spot blue herons and other birds. Real kayak and paddleboard enthusiasts can take the longer 3-mile paddling trail that takes you to Scharer Homestead Ruins, dating back to the early nineteenth century. 

The beach at Caladesi Island State Park is consistently ranked among the best in the country. Dr. Beach ranks it as the number four beach in the nation. The beach boasts three miles of soft, white sand and crystal-clear waters. No high-rises or developments on the beach make it a true escape.Where to Stay: Since Caladesi Island State Park is a day-use park, no camping is allowed. However, there are several hotels and resorts located nearby in Dunedin and Clearwater Beach. Hammock Beach Resort & Spa is a luxurious resort on a barrier island just north of Caladesi Island. It offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico and various amenities, including swimming pools, a spa, golf courses, and tennis courts. There are cheaper stays available as well, I found several on Expedia for less than $1500 a week. Getting There: To get to Caladesi Island State Park, you must take a ferry departing from Honeymoon Island State Park. Departures are hourly, beginning at 10 AM, and a round-trip ride costs $18 for adults, $9 for children ages 6-12, and free for children five and under. It’s about fifteen minutes from Clearwater and forty-five minutes from Tampa.

While you want to be comfortable, skip the faded and raggedy T-shirts and instead aim for a summery look that’s casual but polished. And while you’re packing, you may be tempted to focus just on getting there, make sure you also spend some time thinking about how you’ll transport wet and sandy items back home. There’s nothing worse than a suitcase full of sand. Speaking of gadgets, make sure that they’re waterproof or have protective covers. A soft-sided insulated tote for drinks and snacks is easier to carry than a bulky cooler. Pack some disposable wipes for quick clean-up. Reusable plastic bags can be your best friend: Use them to bring food to the beach, and then carry wet swimsuits and towels on the way home. Having your own mask can also prevent communicable diseases. (I once got a wicked case of pinkeye from a tainted snorkel mask in Costa Rica. Lesson learned.)

Safety First: No matter how good it feels, the sun is not your friend. Load up on sun protection with a strong sunscreen that you can reapply often. If you’re traveling to your destination by plane, look into sunscreen towelettes that won’t explode or leak like bottled sunscreen. When you’re lathering up, don’t forget your face. Add SPF lip balm, and wear sunglasses and a sun hat. Make sure to check the environmental regulations at your beach destination, as some places are banning harmful and coral-damaging chemical sunscreens. Instead, shop for reef-safe sunscreens.

Leave at Home: Being on the beach is an excuse to cut loose; avoid bringing clothing that’s too stuffy or structured. If you’re staying at a hotel, find out ahead of time if towels and other beach amenities are included. Many vacation rentals also have “house” items such as camp chairs and barbecue grills so there’s no need to bring your own.

To determine the cheapest beach vacation destinations, the Divein team analyzed the median cost for popular American beach destinations for a six-night hotel stay for two adults, along with typical meal and beer prices.

The findings highlight the nation’s most inexpensive beach destinations, which deliver big value for a small cost. For those looking to indulge their summer wanderlust without breaking the bank, these enticing locales deserve a spot at the top of your list.  

These are the cheapest U.S. beach destinations where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. 

Twelvemile Beach, Michigan

Topping the list as the most budget-friendly beach destination is Twelvemile Beach in Michigan. As you may have guessed, this area is home to a 12-mile-long stretch of gorgeous sand beach along the shores of Lake Superior.

For those looking to keep costs as low as possible, Twelvemile Beach has a very affordable and popular campground where you can sleep right on the beach. Still, if you’re looking for a few more amenities, nearby hotel stays average just $464 for six nights. Visitors can enjoy affordable meals for around $20 and beers for $7.50 while enjoying the untouched natural beauty.

Mustang Island State Park, Texas  

Mustang Island State Park in Texas is not far behind Twelvemile Beach in affordability. This state park gem delivers the classic Texas beach experience without the inflated prices found at many popular tourist areas. 

For travelers really looking to maximize their savings, Mustang Island has budget-friendly overnight options right within the park’s boundaries. There are 48 campsites with water and electricity, as well as 50 primitive sites for a more rustic experience. If you’d rather stay in a hotel, there are numerous ones available nearby for less than $100 per night.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Known for its great waves and beautiful sand, Wrightsville Beach is America’s third most affordable beach destination. Voted as one of the top surfing towns in the world by National Geographic and one of the best SUP hubs in the U.S. by Outside Magazine, Wrightsville Beach is a paradise for watersports lovers. This walkable island offers plenty to do on land as well, including The Loop fitness trail, beachside yoga, or shopping in the open-air villages. 

Located a short drive from Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach offers an affordable oceanfront escape, with meals costing around $15 and beer at just $4. A six-night hotel stay costs an average of just $636 for the entire week.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The area around Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts, is a surprisingly affordable beach destination. This classic Cape Cod beach is the start of what Henry David Thoreau named the “Great Beach,” a beautiful, long stretch of sandy coastline that stretches for over 20 miles. With sandy shores and relatively calm waves, this beach is popular for swimming during the summer. 

Coast Guard Beach is part of the National Seashore in Massachusetts, so you won’t find a mega beachfront resort here. Instead, venture to the surrounding towns, where you can find small bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels that will only cost an average of $651 for a six-night stay. 

Sand Beach, Acadia National Park, Maine

For a less traditional but still affordable beach vacation, head to Sand Beach, located within Acadia National Park in Maine. Although it’s not your typical hot-weather beach destination (brace yourself for chilly water even in August), this unique setting offers a distinctly New England coastal experience that’s popular with national park visitors.  

As the name implies, Sand Beach stands out with its rare swath of soft sand—it’s the largest beach along Acadia’s iconic rocky shoreline. Stay past sunset to enjoy the best of Sand Beach—this remote destination is an incredible spot for stargazing.

Since there are no lodges or hotels within Acadia’s borders, beach-goers must stay outside the park in one of the many charming towns nearby. Opt for a hotel on the outskirts of Bar Harbor (where most people stay to visit Acadia) to find the best deals.

Northern Mariana Islands

Rounding out this list is the unincorporated territory of American Samoa, a collection of five volcanic islands and two atolls between Fiji and the Cook Islands. A truly off-the-beaten-path destination, there are only a handful of hotels on Tutuila and the neighboring islands, scant tourism infrastructure, and, beyond the fast-food restaurants, few commercial distractions to remind you of home.

Find coral-filled waters, craggy coastlines sculpted of lava, and untouched beaches whose only other sunbathers are the seabirds. All-inclusive resorts and packages allow guests to take care of all food and lodging expenses upfront, meaning they can relax on vacation without fear of unexpected costs cropping up during their trip. These four destinations offer travelers a chance to book an all-inclusive vacation and roundtrip airfare for under $500.

The Dominican Republic

The beaches of the Dominican Republic are as beautiful as any in the Caribbean, and round-trip flights to the island can cost as little as $180 from Chicago or Miami. Choice Hotels’ Ascend collection includes two all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic with incredibly low nightly rates: Travel during the off seasons—spring and fall—and you can nab a stay at Emotions by Hodelpa Juan Dolio for as little as $100 per night, or at Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata from $97 per night.

The Bahamas

While not a classic all-inclusive resort vacation, you’ll certainly find everything you need on board a cruise ship to the Bahamas. We even found a 4-night cruise departing from Miami going to the Bahamas for $169 per person! 

Cancún

Roundtrip flights to Cancún from southeastern airports like Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Miami can be found for as little as $183. You’ll find the best deals during off-season, mid-summer through autumn, and fares tend to be cheaper for travel on weekdays than weekends.

Riu Hotels & Resorts operates a series of all-inclusive resorts in Cancún, including the HOTEL RIU DUNAMAR 5* which has rooms available for as little as $137 per night. For those who would rather bundle their airfare and hotel, CheapCaribbean.com offers deals on several all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare that will get you to Cancún for under $500. This vacation package to Riviera Maya  includes three nights at the Bahia Principe Grand Coba, a 5-star hotel right by popular Playa Del Carmen complete with spa, casino, and beach access. 

Other Top Spots for a Budget Vacation

If all-inclusive resorts aren’t your style, there are still plenty of other cheap tropical vacation spots to explore.  While additional expenses like food and excursions won’t be covered, you can still find round-trip airfare and lodging for under $500 at these destinations.

Puerto Rico

You can often find round-trip flights from Miami to San Juan for around $100—with some weekday options as low as $75—and flights from other parts of the east coast are usually under $200 thanks to budget airlines like Spirit. 

Vacation rentals are the most affordable option for accommodations and you can find several cheap options that are right by the beach – like this two-bedroom condo that costs just $89 per night or this spacious studio with spa tub and patio for just $99 per night.

Stretch your budget even further by spending your days lounging on the gorgeous beaches around the island, all of which are free and open to the public, or seeking out fun free experiences in the capital city of San Juan, like the University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Garden.

Oahu, Hawaii

Budget airlines like Southwest and Alaskan have made trips to Hawaii affordable. Several times a year, these airlines have sales that bring flights to Hawaii down to less than $300.  (Airfare sites such as Airfarewatchdog, SmarterTravel’s sister site, will alert you when fares drop.)

If you’re lucky enough to snag one of these low fares to Honolulu—or if you’re the lucky owner of a Southwest Companion Pass, which is actually fairly easy to get if you keep an eye out for associated credit card offers—Oahu has worthwhile low-budget lodgings that could help keep your tropical vacation total under $500. Vacation rentals will once again give you the best bang for your buck, with many highly rated options on Vrbo listed at less than $100 per night.

Plus, many of Oahu’s most worthwhile attractions are free or open for a nominal fee, including hiking up Diamond Head ($5 for entry, $10 to park a vehicle in the lot), paying tribute at Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona (free), and sunbathing on Waikiki Beach (free).

Florida

Americans looking to keep their tropical vacations under $500 don’t actually have to leave the contiguous part of their continent to laze on the beach while shaded by palm trees. Orbitz’s list of vacation package deals under $499 usually offers some worthwhile all-inclusive deals to Orlando. Likewise, Travelocity has a dedicated Flight + Hotel Deals Under $400 page that includes various packages to Miami and Orlando, with stays at properties like the Westgate Vacation Villa Resort and the Boulan South Beach.

If you’d rather book airfare and lodging separately, check out Expedia’s round-trip fares to Orlando for less than $100. Couple that with affordable lodgings, like the family-friendly Coco Key Hotel and Waterpark Resort—just $132 for a room that sleeps four and only $19 more for a King Suite—and you’ve got yourself a memorable tropical trip with the kids that won’t break the bank.

Tips for Finding All-Inclusive Vacations with Airfare Under $500

Wherever you choose to book your affordable tropical vacation, one key strategy to keeping it under $500 is to understand what average prices look like for where you want to go—and to be ready to buy the minute you see fares that are listed well below that.

“If you’ve been watching for a good fare and you find one, don’t hesitate,” says Jeff Klee, the CEO of CheapAir. “When you go away for a few days or hours to consult with friends, or just continue to shop around, you may be surprised to find that the fare has disappeared while you mulled it over.”

One other tip for keeping vacations under $500, from Klee: “Flexibility is your friend. Unless your trip is for an event tied to a specific set of dates, often just shifting your search dates by a few days can offer big savings. Remember that mid-week flights—Tuesdays and Wednesdays—are usually a much better value than those on the weekend.”

Dingle Peninsula

Consistently voted one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Dingle Peninsula wins the hearts of so many with its lush landscape, which includes narrow cliff-side roads, mountain ranges, and sandy beaches. Giant’s Causeway

The only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland, the Giant’s Causeway is one of the world’s truly must-see destinations. Once said to have been built by giants, the 40,000 or so hexagonal columns were actually formed by volcanic eruptions. The legends that surround this area run deep, however, and visitors may get swept up in the myths of massive men and shipwrecks—Girona of the Spanish Armada foundered here in 1588—by walking among the stones.

The Burren

Located in County Clare, the Burren is an explorers dream, featuring more than 100 square miles of natural limestone and offering ancient stone structures, grassy fields, caves, and jagged countryside. Among the top sites to see while visiting are the Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen, an ancient stone tomb dating between 2,000 and 2,500 B.C.E.; Leamaneh Castle, with its 15th-century residential tower and 17th-century fortified home; and Caherconnell Stone Fort, a nearly perfectly preserved structure dating back between 400 and 1200 C.E.

Glendalough

About an hour south of Dublin, Glendalough, or Valley of the Two Lakes, houses the ruins of what was once one of the leading monastic settlements in Ireland. A hermit monk named Saint Kevin founded the monastery before his death in about 618. The settlement flourished for the next 600 years. Today, visitors can explore stone structures, churches, a cathedral, a round tower, and a cemetery.

Cliffs of Moher

One of the most photographed places in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher ascend more than 700 feet above the water and cover nearly five miles. The dramatic cliffs are home to several species of sea birds, including the only mainland colony of Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Choughs. Visitors are welcome to climb the stairs leading to O’Brien’s Tower, which provides panoramic views. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the Aran Islands.

Ring of Kerry

Medieval ruins, sandy beaches, lakes, mountains, a lush forest, and a jagged coastline all call the Ring of Kerry home. Part of the Iveragh Peninsula, it’s 110 miles of pure beauty. The drive takes place in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland, and begins and ends in the town of Killarney, which makes a good base camp for a trip. Aran Islands

Located in Galway Bay, the three Aran Islands provide a perfect glimpse into some enduring Irish traditions—Gaelic is still spoken and most people get around by horse and buggy or bike. The largest of the three islands, Inis Mor, is the most well-known and offers the greatest amount of modern-day conveniences. Inis Meáin, or the middle island, is the least visited and clings proudly to its Irish cultural tradition. On a clear day, Inis Oírr, or the East Island, provides unparalleled views of the Cliffs of Moher.

Skellig Michael

Just eight miles off the coast of Portmagee and towering more than 700 feet above the water, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, which houses a well-preserved sixth century monastic settlement. Visitors are welcome to walk in the footsteps of the monks who once inhabited this island by climbing the 670 steps leading to the now abandoned beehive-shaped huts. Puffins make the island their home in the late spring, while gannets consume every ledge on the nearby Little Skellig.

Cobh

Once briefly named “Queenstown” in honor of a visit from Queen Victoria in 1849, Cobh reverted to its original name in 1921. Located on the Great Island in Cork Harbor, the town’s streets climb a hill crowned by a cathedral overlooking the water. As the embarkation point, including the Titanic’s last port of call, to America, Cobh was the last glimpse of Ireland for many people.
