Traveling is hard enough. Don’t make it worse by wearing the wrong thing and being uncomfortable throughout your trip. You want to be dry, comfortable, and at a good temperature from the minute you leave your hotel in the morning until you crash at night. Here’s how to effectively layer from head to toe on any kind of fall trip to ensure your wardrobe preforms the way you need it to all day long.

What Fabrics Are Best for Fall Layering?

mashiki | Adobe Stock

Even more important than picking the right cut or style, choosing the right fabric for your fall travel wardrobe will set you up for layering success. Your summer linens and thin cottons will still have their place on your fall packing list, but the real heroes of the season will be fabrics that are insulating and lightweight, like cashmere and thermal knits, as well as heartier cold-weather staples like wool and denim.

Cashmere

Up to eight times warmer than traditional wool, cashmere is ideal for an autumn trip. However, this luxury textile is a known budget breaker. The heightened cost stems from the time- and labor-intensive process of creating cashmere, requiring wool from several cashmere goats to craft even a single garment. If you’d like to try cashmere, avoid some of the sweater-induced sticker shock by browsing the affordable options at Quince

Merino Wool

Merino wool offers an affordable but high-quality alternative to its cashmere cousin. Made from merino sheep wool, this fabric is anti-static, smooth and cool to the touch, and highly insulating despite its light weight.

Wool

Standard wool is still a tried-and-true staple of the season. It’s naturally insulating and more common than the specialty wools listed above, making it more affordable overall. To keep your wool cozy and warm (instead of unbearably itchy), wash with a wool detergent and hang to dry.

Thermal Knit

Also called waffle knit, thermal knits get their insulating qualities by trapping air warmed by the body in the tiny cells created by its grid-like weave. Thermal knits are frequently wrinkle-resistant, meaning they’ll emerge from your suitcase ready to wear.

Denim

Originally developed as fabric for durable workwear, denim is now a feature of nearly everyone’s closet. A quality sturdy denim is an ideal outer layer for fall, easy to pair with a variety of other fabrics, and able to withstand the fickle autumn weather.

Corduroy

A perennially popular fall pick, corduroy is one of the few fabrics for pants that is both warm and fashionable. Slightly dressier than denim, it is also typically available in iconic autumnal colors.

Specialty Fabrics

There are a variety of other specialized fabrics meant to keep wearers warm. The HEATTECH linen from Uniqlo offers shirts, sweaters, socks, and leggings in its titular ultra-thin but ultra-warm fabric. Thinsulate, found most often in thin down-alternative jackets, is a hypoallergenic insulating material that provides warmth without bulk. Plant-based cotton alternative Tencel is eco-friendly and moisture-wicking, perfect for wear beneath heavier outer layers in the fall. Check the product details of your potential purchases for information on any specialized or branded materials they may contain.

How to Layer for Fall Travel: Fashion Rules to Follow

qunica.com | Adobe Stock

Thoughtful layering will keep you warm and stylish on your travels. When crafting your outfit itinerary, keep a few golden layering rules in mind.

  1. Layer light to heavy. Your tightest, lightest layers should go first, followed by your heavier, warmer layers.
  2. Layer short to long. Your outer layers should be the same length or longer than your inner layers.
  3. Layer tight to loose. Your outermost layers should allow plenty of room for your inner layers to maintain comfort and freedom of motion. Opt for wide-leg pants and consider sizing up in sweaters.
  4. Experiment with silhouettes. Mix and match silhouettes and textures to add some dimension to your outfits. Add a turtleneck underneath a crew-neck sweater, or try a houndstooth coat over a smooth merino cardigan. This will add interesting depth as well as functional warmth to your ensemble.

Best Items to Layer for Fall Travel

Here are a few closet staples to help you elevate your autumn layering game.

Shirts: You don’t have to leave your T-shirts behind in summer. A plain long or short sleeve made from 100% cotton or Tencel fabric makes a great first layer, especially in the early warmer days of autumn.

Sweaters: Sweaters are the cornerstone of every fall wardrobe. Tighter options like a rib-knit turtleneck are the perfect first layer, while looser silhouettes, like this loose V-neck from Old Navy, or bulkier cable knit options can easily be layered on top.

Cardigans: While cardigans fall definitively within the sweater category, they deserve their own shoutout. The humble cardigan‘s convenient front closure makes it an ideal second layer, easy to add or remove. For extra drama, try layering a duster cardigan beneath a long-line coat.

Vests: Puffer vests, like this Wonder Puff Cropped Vest from Lululmeon, keep your core warm while letting your arms have a bit more mobility than a coat or jacket. While fashion vests, like sweater vests or wool suit vests, won’t do much in the way of warmth, they will lend interesting visual depth to all your fall looks.

Jackets: A stylish denim jacket provides light warmth for early fall days. As the weather turns colder, transition to a lined jacket. The Astrid Lined Jacket from Kuhl is a medium crop and comes in three cozy colors.

Coats: If traveling to a chillier destination, you’ll need a heavier coat. This could mean a fully insulated winter jacket, like this thin but ultra-warm coat from Cotopaxi, or a more upscale option, like an ever-stylish peacoat. To maximize layering potential, try a three-in-1 jacket like this one from REI which provides a base, mid, and outer layer in a single coat. Finally, don’t forget a raincoat for those rainy autumn days—Everlane has styles in men’s and women’s sizes.

Tights: A good pair of tights will extend the life of your summer skirts well into autumn and can be used as a base layer underneath clothes as it nears winter. Opt for tights designed to trap heat, like the HEATTECH Knit Tights from UNIQLO, rather than standard nylons. If you prefer sheer tights, fleece-lined tights mimic the look of nylons while still keeping you warm.

Undershirts: Similarly to tights, adding an undershirt base layer will boost the warmth of any outfit. The HEATTECH innerwear line has several options. You could also throw on a classic thermal knit, suitable under clothes or as a standalone shirt.

Hats: You can’t go wrong with a classic beanie. The Cozy Hour Beanie from Athleta is a stylish option that comes in eight colors. For an equally warm twist on the classic stocking hat, try the Mongolian Cashmere Beret from Quince. If your favorite fall hat doesn’t provide much protection against the elements, try layering it with a thin pair of earmuffs or an ear-warming headband. If rain is in the forecast, skip the umbrella or the plastic rain hood and try a stylish waterproof headscarf.

Scarves: A good travel scarf is the best accessory. We recommend a blanket scarf like the Dreamsoft Travel Scarf, which can double as a blanket in chilly airplane cabins.

Gloves: While gloves aren’t always necessary for autumn, it’s good to have a pair on hand for frosty evenings or an unexpected dip in temperature. The Rho Glove from Arc’Teryx are excellent for transitioning from fall into winter. Wear them alone in autumn and layered underneath thicker gloves when the cold weather sets in.

Shoes: Nothing is worse than freezing damp feet while trying to enjoy a day of sightseeing. Your fall footwear should always be water-resistant. For everyday wear, the waterproof (and machine washable!) Vessi Weekend sneakers or the Wexford Waterproof Chelsea Boot from Ariat will do the trick. For active vacations, these waterproof boots from KEEN will keep you warm and dry while you hit the trails.

Socks: Warm socks are a must-have for autumn travel. Classic wool socks will do the trick on dry days. If there’s rain in your vacation forecast, invest in a hearty pair of waterproof socks to layer with your waterproof shoes for double the protection.

How to Layer for an Active Fall Vacation

Zoran Zeremski | Adobe Stock

Layering will look different on the top of a mountain versus the top of the Eiffel Tower. Layering for active travel in autumn becomes trickier, especially if your excursions involve significant elevation changes.

Remember this cardinal rule for hiking as the weather begins to cool down—start cold! If you plan to spend the day on an intensive hike, start with the fewest layers tolerable and add layers as needed. This prevents sweat from building up and later cooling down, potentially lowering your core temperature to a dangerous degree.

For active trips, look for base layers made from durable moisture-wicking fabric, like this long-sleeve merino base layer from REI. Bring along a pair of liner gloves and heavier waterproof gloves for higher elevations. Consider tossing an extra pair of wool socks in your hiking pack in case the first pair gets wet (or sweaty!).

We love idyllic fall days—those colorful leaf backdrops, crisp temperatures perfect for walking, and plenty of sunshine. However, we hate packing bulky jackets to prepare for those not-so-fun fall weather hallmarks, like rain, clouds, and cold nights.

To solve this dilemma, we’ve curated a selection of the best lightweight, packable jackets designed for travel. These versatile options will keep you warm and dry throughout fall’s varied conditions without taking up too much luggage space.

Quince 100 Percent Suede Biker Jacket

When you want a jacket that will look timeless and stylish in any city, pack Quince’s 100 Percent Suede Biker Jacket. True to its name, this jacket is crafted entirely from luxuriously soft suede leather. It’s lined with satin, which feels nice and smooth against your layers and prevents damage to delicate fabrics worn underneath.

Despite its premium materials and construction, this jacket is priced at just $150, an unusually affordable option for an all-leather jacket. This competitive pricing stems from Quince’s innovative business model, which employs small-batch production techniques and maintains lower overhead costs. The result is a high-quality, versatile jacket that doesn’t break the bank, leaving you with more money to spend on fall trips.

Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket

If you’re looking for a jacket that can withstand anything, reach for Flint and Tinder’s Waxed Trucker Jacket, as seen on Pedro Pascal as he runs from zombies in The Last of Us. If the jacket can outlast the apocalypse, it’ll surely survive your fall trip.

The secret to this jacket’s resilience lies in its waxed and weather-resistant sailcloth, a durable material that improves with age. Wax on both sides of the shell adds warmth and insulation, and the exterior can be rewaxed as needed to ensure a lifetime of water resistance.

Inside, a soft, blanket-like lining provides extra coziness for chilly days. Travelers will appreciate the practical exterior button pocket and interior media pocket.

M.M. LaFleur Jolie Jardigan

When you need a layer that’s not too heavy and not too light, pack M.M. LaFleur’s Jolie Jardigan. This innovative jacket/cardigan hybrid features a cropped silhouette, stylish lapels, and removable shoulder pads, making it equally suitable for business trips and casual vacations.

Effortlessly adaptable, the Jardigan can be worn as a polished blazer for professional settings or paired with jeans for a more relaxed, cardigan-like look. Its stretchy knit fabric is not only comfortable but resists wrinkles.

Patagonia Macro Puff Hoody

Never be caught unprepared with Patagonia’s Macro Puff Hoody—a handy jacket that’s always ready when you need it. This ingenious puffy jacket compresses into its own pocket, making it a breeze to stash in your day bag or carry-on for instant warmth on demand.

As the beefier sibling of the Micro Puff, the Macro Puff delivers impressive heat without compromising on weight. At a mere 15.48 ounces, it’s remarkably light yet incredibly warm. Its adaptability shines through in various scenarios: wear it as a liner under your ski jacket, don it solo for a hiking expedition, or sport it while exploring urban landscapes.

The jacket’s recycled polyester insulation is a game-changer for unpredictable weather. Unlike down, it retains its warming properties even when wet, while a water-repellent and windproof finish adds extra protection against the elements. Whether you’re facing drizzles or gusts, the Macro Puff keeps you cozy and dry.

Smartwool Fleece Jacket

Smartwool’s Active Fleece Half-Zip combines the snug comfort of fleece with the moisture-wicking properties of merino wool. This mid-weight jacket is perfect for those crisp days when you need just the right amount of warmth. Its slim profile makes it an excellent layering piece, easily slipping under a heavier jacket when temperatures really dip.

Reflective elements make this fleece our go-to for fall trips when daylight fades early. Whether you’re out for an evening run or a twilight stroll, these reflective details will help ensure you’re visible.

A secure chest pocket keeps your essentials—like your smartphone or travel documents—within easy reach.

Cole Haan Signature Travel Packable Rain Jacket

Cole Haan’s Signature Travel Packable Rain Jacket offers reliable protection against sudden downpours or day-long drizzle without weighing down your luggage. This water-resistant jacket hits just above the knee, offering more coverage than other rain jackets.

If you’re worried about looking shapeless in all your travel photos, don’t be—a drawcord waist allows you to get a nipped-in waist and a custom fit. When the sun comes out, simply pack the jacket away into an included drawstring pouch.

Quikflip 2-in-1 Reversible Backpack Jacket

Originally appearing on Shark Tank, Quikflip’s unique 2-in-1 Reversible Backpack Jacket does double-duty as a backpack and jacket. When you get hot, take off the jacket, tuck it in the hidden pouch, and pull out the drawcords to convert it into a backpack.

No matter which way you wear it, the Quikflip has pockets for both large items and smaller valuables.

Dudley Stephens Uptown Blazer

Blazers are great for fighting the fall chill and for looking pulled-together, but sometimes long for the comfort of your favorite fleece sweatshirt. With Dudley Stephens’ Uptown Blazer, you never have to choose between style and comfort.

The Uptown Blazer combines luxurious details—such as a double-breasted design, satin lining, and gold buttons—with Dudley Stephens’ signature cozy Vello Fleece fabric.

Light shoulder padding and waist darts give the blazer additional structure to make it appropriate for business trips or the first-class cabin, while still maintaining the sweatshirt-like feel.

Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket

Trucker jackets are having a moment, and travelers can rejoice—they’re not just stylish, but incredibly packable too. Duer’s LuxTwill Trucker Jacket is a perfect example of this trend. Crafted from a cotton-elastane blend, this jacket folds down to a compact size, making it easy to slide into your carry-on.

An antimicrobial treatment keeps this jacket fresh for extended wear, so don’t worry about washing it as soon as you step off the plane. It also has plenty of pockets large enough to fit your phone and other essentials.

Quince 100 Percent Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Headed to Berlin, New York City, or somewhere where you want to look as cool as the locals? Pack Quince’s Leather Motorcycle Jacket. Quince put a modern spin on the iconic biker jacket silhouette, resulting in a timeless style that will work on a variety of trips for years to come.

The two-way zipper front closure and zippered sleeve gussets not only add to the biker aesthetic but also provide practical functionality, making it a great travel companion as it allows for easy adjustments to varying temperatures.

With zip pockets at the hip and chest, it offers convenient storage without compromising on style, keeping your essentials secure while you’re on the go.

When you walk into a luxury hotel, relaxation is in the air—literally. Many hotels have their own custom fragrances that they perfume the air with, using aromatherapy to set the mood and help guests get into a vacation mindset. Utilizing calming scents like lavender and sandalwood, hotel fragrances can help link your memories to a sense of place, so every time you smell a certain perfume, you’ll be transported back to a trip.

Want to have that same experience every time you walk in your front door at home? We tested out a variety of fragrance methods, from candles to diffusers, to find out which were the best at making our home smell like a five-star hotel. Try out our picks and feel like you’re on vacation every day.

Jupiter Smells Rich Mykonos Candle

Jupiter Smells Rich Candle
Jupiter Smells Rich

Your house may be hundreds of miles from the beach, but it can smell like you’re on an exotic vacation in Mykonos with Jupiter Smells Rich’s candle. Notes of wild orchid, jasmine, lemon blossom, vanilla, and sandalwood conjure up an island getaway.

This luxury candle is made from 100 percent soy wax and has an all-natural beeswax-coated wick to ensure a clean burn. The scent will linger throughout your house long after you’ve blown out the flame.

Noho Home Reed Diffuser

Noho Home Reed Diffusers
Noho Home

A diffuser is one of the easiest and safest ways to make your home smell like a hotel. A diffuser is a small vial of scented liquid that disperses the fragrance through wooden reeds. Unlike a candle or plug-in, you can just open up a diffuser and forget about it.

Our favorite diffuser is Noho Home’s Puakenikeni Reed Diffuser. Perfumed oil is housed in a beautiful vessel that efficiently distributes fragerance via reeds. When the scent starts to fade, simply flip the reeds to refresh the smell. We love the Puakenikeni scent, which is designed in Hawaii and inspired by the puakenikeni flower.

Enviroscent

enviroscent diffuser and spray product stills
enviroscent

Worried about what you’re breathing in with all of the artificial air fresheners on the market? Enviroscent does things differently, with a focus on making its scents cleaner, healthier, and safer. All of its products use pure fragrance oils in concentrated form (with no additives) and are packaged using renewable and recyclable minimal-waste materials. Scent your space via the stix + stand diffuser, a car vent clip, or a spray.

No matter which method you choose, it’s all flameless and liquidless to eliminate danger and mess. There are many delectable scents to choose from, including a blend of lavender tea and honey, which smells incredibly relaxing and delicious.

Hillhouse Naturals Candle and Diffuser

Hillhouse Naturals Candle and Diffuser
Hillhouse Naturals

For a fragrance that will fill your house and last a long time, look to Hillhouse Naturals. This company was founded by a mother/daughter duo who make the products (with the help of a team of women) on their family farm. They use local ingredients, most of which come straight from the farm. Hillhouse Naturals’ diffusers last for an average of three to four months, which is significantly longer than most other diffusers on the market. The soy candles also burn longer than regular wax candles and don’t have the dangerous chemicals that can be found in mass-market candles.

You’ll find plenty of unique scents here, including travel-themed varieties like the lakeside diffuser, which smells like “spectacular sunsets upon fresh cool waters” and conjures up past waterfront vacations.

Scentfill

Scentfill product still
Scentfill

Scentfill offers a healthier alternative to traditional plug-ins. The company makes refills that are designed to fit into Air Wick oil warmers but are made with 100 percent plant-based and natural oils rather than chemicals. The fragrances are much more complex and luxurious than what you’d find from a drugstore plug-in—choose the Relax Blend with lemon, lavender, and eucalyptus to make your home smell like a high-end hotel.

Most scents will last between 30 and 60 days if the warmer is set to low, and the refills are reasonably priced at $5.77, making this an affordable option for home fragrances.

Asakuki’s 5-in-1 Aromatherapy Device

Asakuki’s 5-in-1 Aromatherapy Device
Amazon

Enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy and a humidifier with Asakuki’s 5-in-1 Aromatherapy Device. This ultrasonic essential oil diffuser has a large 500-milliliter water tank that allows the diffuser to run for 10 to 15 hours at a time. An auto-off safety will switch off the diffuser when the water runs out, so you don’t have to worry about monitoring it. The Asakuki’s fan is ultra-quiet, so you won’t even notice that it’s on.

Use your own essential oils with the diffuser to create the perfect custom scent for your home.

Lavender Linen Room Spray

Lavender Linen Room Spray
Amazon

Lavender is one of the most calming and relaxing scents and will help give your home that hotel spa smell. Spritz this lavender linen room spray on your pillows, and it may just help you improve your sleep as well.

Once you start to associate the smell with sleep, you can even pack the room spray and take it with you to help you sleep better in unfamiliar hotel rooms.

Skandinavisk Candles

Skandinavisk Candles
Skandinavisk

For the ultimate hygge experience, light a candle from Skandinavisk. This company takes inspiration from Scandinavia to create unique fragrances like Hav (sea), Lykke (happiness), and Koto (home). Each candle is beautifully designed around a theme, like the Nordlys candle (Norwegian for northern lights), which comes in a painted glass holder that looks like the sky.

The candles will scent a mid-sized room for up to 45 hours, and the glass can be reused as a plant holder or decorative vase once it’s empty.

Every skier knows the struggle: the awkward clomping down the stairs at lunchtime, the stiff-legged shuffle to the après-ski bar, all while imprisoned in rigid, unforgiving ski boots. But what if there was another way?

Imagine this: you glide to a stop at the bottom of the hill, unclip from a high-performance ski boot frame, and stride away in the plush comfort of a snowboard-style boot. This isn’t a skier’s daydream—it’s the reality Apex Ski Boots aims to deliver.

With their innovative two-part boot system, Apex is boldly attempting what many deemed impossible: a perfect union between the cozy embrace of a snowboard boot and the precise control of a ski boot.

Curious about these new ski boots, I stopped into Sun & Ski Sports to test the Apex Blanca VS and see if they lived up to the hype.

Apex Blanca Ski Boots
Apex

Apex Blanca VS All Mountain Ski Boot Overview

The Apex Blanca VS is a high-performance ski boot with a radical design departure from traditional ski boots. It consists of two main components:

  1. An inner boot: Similar to a comfortable snowboard boot
  2. An external chassis: Provides the rigidity and support needed for skiing

This design allows skiers to walk comfortably in just the inner boot when not on the slopes, addressing one of the biggest complaints about traditional ski boots.

Pros:

Comfort: The heat-moldable liner and anatomical shell design provide a snug, comfortable fit that minimizes pressure points and fatigue.

Performance: The medium flex offers a good balance of responsiveness and forgiveness, suitable for a variety of skiing styles and terrain.

Versatility: The boots perform well on groomed runs and in powder, making them a good option for skiers who enjoy exploring the whole mountain.

Walk mode: The walk mode makes it easier to get around the resort without compromising downhill performance.

Customizable fit: The BOA lacing system allows for a precise and adjustable fit.

Warm: The inner boot provides excellent insulation.

Cons:

Price: The Blancas are significantly more expensive than many traditional ski boots. They cost $720, but at the time of writing, they were on sale at Sun & Ski Sports for $649.

Less responsive: Some advanced skiers may find them less responsive than traditional boots.

Learning curve: The unique Boa Double Cross closure system requires a bit of time to get used to.

Final Review

The Apex ski boot’s innovative design successfully addresses many long-standing complaints about traditional ski boots, most notably the discomfort of walking. However, this comes at the cost of added weight, complexity, and a higher price point.

The Apex Blanca VS could be a game-changer for skiers who have struggled with boot comfort or those looking to extend their time on the mountain without sore feet. Personally, I don’t think I’ll be able to go back to traditional ski boots after experiencing these.

Where to Buy

Ski boots are definitely not something you want to buy online. You’ll have the best results if you go to a professional boot fitter who can ensure you get the right size and model ski boot for you. When I was considering the Apex boots, I went to Sun & Ski Sports, a well-stocked store with expert boot fitters on staff.

Pick a store like Sun & Ski that has a variety of ski boot brands available so you can try on a bunch to see which fits your foot the best. The boot fitter there explained that ski boots use a Mondopoint size chart, which is based on the length of your foot in centimeters. He also noted that the conversion is approximate, and ability level, how often you ski, and foot shape all factor into your Mondopoint size—which is why you shouldn’t just use a chart online to convert your shoe size into ski boots.

Ski boots that are even slightly too big or too small can cause severe discomfort on the slopes, so getting the right size is crucial if you want to ski all day without pain.

With warm weather and long sunny days, the summer season simply begs to be spent outside. Whether you’re planning a beach vacation, a mountain getaway, or a leisurely staycation, these are the editor-approved essentials you’ll want to bring to make your summer travels better.

Anymaka Hammock Kit

Anymaka’s Hammock Kit
https://www.anymaka.com/

Nothing says “summer relaxation” like lounging in a hammock. Upgrade your experience with Anymaka’s Hammock Kit. This portable hammock stand is perfect for travel since you can set it up anywhere within seconds (no need to find two perfect trees to hang from). It’s great to bring to a vacation rental with a backyard or a campground.

The hammock stand is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, which is actually quite lightweight. This makes it easy to load and unload into your car and carry until you find a good spot. We didn’t have any trouble lifting the hammock stand on our own.

Although the Anymaka hammock stand looks like it requires a lot of assembly, it’s actually super easy. We set it up in under a minute—simply unfold the stand, snap it into place, and lock in the hammock using the included carabiners.

The hammock stand adjusts to multiple positions, so you can lounge sitting up or lying down. We highly recommend splurging on the full-pack enhanced kit, which includes a travel bag with padded shoulder straps for easy carrying, a double hammock, a cup holder, a canopy kit, and an insect net.

We tested out the hammock kit in New England, where black flies can be vicious in the summer, and the insect net was amazing and protected us from bugs and bites while still being able to enjoy being outside. Likewise, the sun shade is a great addition on days when the sun is extra strong and you want to relax without burning or overheating.

Teva Original Universal Slim Sandals

Teva’s Original Universal Sandals are beloved among travelers for their light weight, comfort, and ability to transition from water activities to dry land effortlessly. These cult favorite sandals have recently gotten a minimalist makeover, with slimmed-down straps in the Original Universal Slim version that make these shoes even more versatile.

The new, smaller straps make these Tevas ones you can pack for any type of trip, from European vacations to festivals, since they look more casual and stylish than the hiker-vibe the original sandals give off.

We tried them out and found that they were just as comfortable as the old version—and also appreciated the built-in peppermint-based anti-odor treatment that comes in handy when packing these on hot weather trips.

Coolibar Kitts Shirt Dress UPF 50+

Coolibar Kitts Shirt Dress
Coolibar

Save your skin from the summer sun with Coolibar’s Kitts Shirt Dress. This classy dress has a UPF 50+ fabric, so you don’t have to worry about constantly reapplying sunscreen. The lightweight Aire fabric feels as light as air and looks like silk. The dress comes with a removable tie belt, helping you to get a custom fit.

Wear this versatile dress as a beach cover-up or out to dinner—it will look good in any situation.

Kuhl Freeflex Shorts

https://www.kuhl.com/

We’ve been hunting for the best shorts for summer activities and finally found them in Kuhl’s Freeflex Shorts. These shorts are the perfect 4-inch length—long enough to be appropriate for most settings but not so long that they’re unflattering or frumpy.

Made from a quick-drying, moisture-wicking material with UPF 50+ sun protection, the Freeflex shorts are packable and perfect for hikes or walks.

Best of all, the shorts have four pockets: two concealed zip pockets in the front and two chino-style pockets in the back.

Snoozeband Pro

SnoozeBand™ Pro 2.0 - Bluetooth Sleep Mask
https://www.snoozeband.co/

Long summer days mean the sun rises earlier in the morning, waking you up well before your alarm clock—especially if you’re staying in a hotel or vacation rental with flimsy curtains. To cope, we’re packing the Snoozeband Pro on all of our summer trips. This sleep mask not only blocks out light, but it has ultra-thin headphones built-in, so you can listen to white noise or relaxing music to help block out sounds and sleep better.

The rechargeable battery lasts up to 15 hours so you can get a full night’s sleep. The mask’s 3D eye cups won’t restrict your eye movement (or mess up your eyelashes), helping you to sleep better.

Bilby Headlamp

Bilby 400 Headlamp
https://www.knog.com/

One cardinal rule of hiking safety is to always carry a light source with you, even if you plan to return well before dark. (And no, your phone’s flashlight doesn’t count.) If you get lost, hurt, or otherwise delayed, a light is crucial safety equipment to help you light your way home.

That’s why we always keep the Bilby 400 Headlamp in our daypack, just in case. This ultra-bright headlamp features 400 lumens and a beam that can reach over 300 feet  (which will not only help you see well in the dark but can be used to signal rescuers.)

The Bilby is rechargeable and has an easy-to-see battery indicator that helps us see if the headlamp needs to be charged before we head out. Other cool features include a silicone strap that can be wiped clean, an electronic tilt function that lights up where we’re looking, and multiple light options that can be programmed via an app.

Oleu Boardshirt

https://oleuoriginals.com

If you’ve ever emerged from the water after a day of snorkeling with an epic sunburn on your back, you know that swimming in a shirt can sometimes be a better solution than having to keep reapplying sunscreen. Most shirts aren’t water-friendly though, which is why we’re packing Oleu’s Boardshirts for all our beach trips from now on.

Made from a UPF 50+ fabric, these shirts are designed to be comfortable in and out of the water. The snap-front shirt can be worn open or closed and dries extremely quickly, so you can wear it from the ocean to the bar.

Osea Discovery Travel Set

Osea Discovery Travel Set
https://oseamalibu.com/

When impromptu summer trips arise, we’re prepared with Osea’s Bestsellers Discovery Set. We keep this kit stocked so that we can grab it and throw it in our suitcase without repacking essential toiletries every time we travel.

This four-piece set is perfectly sized for air travel (with everything well under the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule) and comes in a nice, zippered bag to keep everything organized.

The set includes everything you need to keep your skincare routine going while on the road: Undaria Algae Body Oil, Hyaluronic Sea Serum, Seabiotic Water Cream, and Ocean Cleanser.

Charleston Shoe Company Gladys Sandals

https://charlestonshoeco.com

Sandals are a summer style essential, but most of them look much worse for wear by the end of the season—that’s why we love Charleston Shoe Company’s Gladys Sandal. These espadrilles are machine washable, so you can keep them clean and fresh no matter how many miles you walk in them.

The mini one-inch wedge is the ideal height for travel, as it can be worn up or down and is just as comfortable as a flat shoe.

Orvis DriCast Quarter-Zip Pullover Shirt

Orvis DriCast Quarter-Zip Pullover Shirt
https://www.orvis.com/

Some sun-protective clothing can feel stiff, but Orvis’ new DriCast fabric feels just like a comfortable t-shirt. Orvis’ DriCast Quarter-Zip, available in men’s and women’s specific fits, is lightweight enough to wear on hot summer days for extra UPF protection.

The material is sweat-wicking, quick-drying, breathable, and equipped with Orvis’ trademarked OutSmart Fresh fabric which resists odors—so you can wear it multiple times on one trip. The quarter-zip comes in lots of bright and fun colors and patterns that are great for livening up your summer wardrobe.

Nisolo Huarache Sandals

Nisolo Huarache Sandals
https://nisolo.com/

Huarache Sandals are the ideal summer shoe, offering the airy ventilation of a sandal with the protection and comfort of a shoe. Nisolo’s Huaraches, available for men and women, are our favorite pair, thanks to their soft, handwoven leather—which is even water-resistant.

The slip-on design is excellent for travel days, and the shock-absorbing foam midsole provides plenty of cushioning to make these comfortable for long walks. Dress these sandals up or down—they work with shorts, dresses, jeans, and pretty much any outfit.

Uniqlo Linen Blend Pants

Uniqlo Linen Blend Pants
https://www.uniqlo.com/

Linen is a classic summer fabric for a good reason—it’s light, cooling, and easy to wear. Our editors are a big fan of Uniqlo’s Linen-Blend Relaxed Pants, an affordable option for hot days when you don’t want to wear shorts. These pants are great for long flights, with loose-fitting legs and an elastic waistband.

Roll up the cuffs to customize these pants to the perfect length (and add a touch of style.)

SeaVees Cardinal Sneaker

Cardinal Sneaker in White
https://www.seavees.com

A classic white sneaker is the most versatile shoe you can own for summer, and we’re wearing SeaVees Cardinal Sneaker on repeat. This popular shoe combines comfort and style—as a nod to the brand’s history, it incorporates vintage-inspired webbing reminiscent of the original 1960s SeaVees. The distinctive sport logo on the tongue gives it a unique flair that elevates it from being a boring white sneaker.

A cushiony memory foam insole, padded collar, and deep cupsole design provide exceptional support that will have you racking up the miles on foot.

Neutrogena Sunscreen Stick

Neutrogena Sunscreen Stick
Amazon

Our editor recommends keeping Neutrogena’s Sunscreen Stick in your bag so you’ll be prepared for outdoor summer lunches, unexpectedly long walks, or any other scenarios where you’ll wish you had sunscreen.

The stick format is easy to apply and mess-free and is perfect for travel since there’s no risk of spillage.

OluKai Tiare Strappy Sandals

OluKai

OluKai’s Tiare Strappy Leather Sandals offer a perfect blend of elegance and comfort, making them an ideal choice for formal and casual occasions. The sandals feature a premium all-leather construction with a buttery-soft texture that doesn’t require a break-in period. We love that the straps and toe posts are cushioned so they won’t dig into your feet. Flip the shoes over, and you’ll discover an ocean wave-inspired pattern that’s not only stylish but provides exceptional traction.

Whether paired with a favorite dress for a night out or worn during a stylish day around town, the Tiare Strappy can be worn multiple times on your trip.

Only Hydration

Only Hydration
Only Hydration

Flights are notoriously dehydrating, so be sure to stash a few packets of Only Hydration electrolyte mixes in your carry-on this summer. Available in a single-serve, powdered mix format, you can easily take Only Hydration through airport security and then pour them into your water bottle or in-flight beverage.

The drink mixes contain a blend of electrolytes, vitamins, and superfruits to help hydrate you better than water. I love Only Hydration for travel because it doesn’t use artificial flavors or sweeteners and has only 3 grams of sugar.

Supersmile Extra Whitening System

Supersmile
Supersmile

When you pack Supersmile’s Extra Whitening System, you’ll be proud to show off your smile in your vacation snapshots. This two-pack features a whitening toothpaste and an extra whitening accelerator that freshens your breath while safely removing stains and yellowing. Despite the whitening power, Supersmile doesn’t result in tooth sensitivity.

It comes in a travel-friendly 2.5-ounce size that’s perfect for longer trips.

Bug Bite Thing

Bug Bite Thing
Bug Bite Thing

Bug bites and stings are an unfortunate side effect of any summer vacation. Make them less painful and itchy by packing the Bug Bite Thing on your next trip. This small tool works by removing insect venom, saliva, and other irritants left under the skin after a bug attack.

Simply place the tool over the bug bite, pull up on the handles to create suction, hold for 10-20 seconds, and release for instant relief.

It doesn’t matter if the bed is a luxury pillow-top in a five-star hotel or a lumpy mattress in a shared hostel room—what traveler hasn’t lain awake, staring at a new ceiling and wishing for sleep? Between jet lag, unfamiliar surroundings, and loud or bright environments, travel can wreak havoc on your sleep schedule.

The market is full of gadgets that promise to help you sleep, but which of them actually work? From smart masks that lull you to sleep with guided breathing to earbuds that block out noisy neighbors, we’ve tested the best tools to help you catch those Z’s on the road.

Hatch Rest Go

Hatch Rest Go Product Image in Green
Hatch

If slamming hotel doors, loud traffic, or noisy neighbors keep you awake at night, try packing a portable sound machine. We tested the Hatch Rest Go, a travel-sized sound machine that plays soothing sounds for up to 15 hours.

Choose from sounds like white noise, rain, ocean, or fan (we liked customizing the sound to our vacation destination, for example, playing the ocean sounds at the beach) and enjoy a better sleep.

Our favorite feature of the Hatch Rest Go is its simplicity. You don’t need to download an app or connect to WiFi or Bluetooth. Just charge it using the USB-C cable and push the button to start playing white noise. Cycle through the sounds and set the volume with a tap of the buttons.

Favorite Features:

  • Long-lasting battery
  • Can be used while charging
  • Small and packable
  • Made from recycled plastics
  • Preloaded sounds

Aura Smart Sleep Mask

Aura Smart Sleep Mask Product Image
Aura Circle

The Aura Smart Sleep Mask stands out as the most futuristic sleep gadget we tested. This innovative eyemask features built-in speakers and lights designed to enhance your sleep experience. When paired with its companion app, you can access a wide variety of light and sound programs directly within the mask.

These programs cater to different needs, from improving sleep quality to reducing anxiety and stress. The app allows you to set personalized nighttime routines, such as starting with a guided breathing exercise to induce sleep, followed by white noise throughout the night.

Our favorite feature was the box breathing program, which uses both light and a soothing voice to guide you through a deep breathing exercise. Additionally, the mask’s built-in light can simulate a natural sunrise, offering a gentler way to wake up.

Favorite Features:

  • 3D cushion design blocks out 100 percent of light
  • No eye pressure due to the molded design
  • Ultra-thin speakers are comfortable for side sleepers
  • Personalized sleep program
  • Ability to set an alarm that will only wake you up (and not disturb your partner)
  • Seven-day battery life
  • Sleep tracking app

Soundoff Sleep Earbuds

SoundOff Sleep Earbuds Product Image
Soundoffsleep

Forget white noise—the latest in noise-masking technology is pink noise. Pink noise emulates sounds humans find pleasant in nature (like ocean waves or rain) and helps you fall asleep quickly and sleep better throughout the night.

SoundOff Sleep Earbuds combine sound-masking pink noise with noise-blocking memory foam earbud tips to help you get the best night’s sleep ever. Noise masking technology actually blocks out all the sound around you, compared to noise canceling, which still lets you hear the disruptive sound (it’s just not as loud).

We liked the SoundOff sleep earbuds because they were the easiest sleep gadget to use. Simply take the earbuds out of the case, turn them on, and you’re ready to go. If you need to, you can adjust the pink noise volume by pressing a button.

Favorite Features:

  • Easy to use, no app required
  • Preloaded sounds
  • Blocks out noise extremely well
  • Charge lasts up to 16 hours
  • The portable carrying case doubles as a charger
  • Memory foam tips form to your ears and are very comfortable

Philips Sleep headphones

Philips Sleep headphones Product Image
Kokoon.io

If you really need to block out noise to get a good night’s sleep, we recommend Philips’ Sleep Headphones. These ultra-thin headphones are designed to lie flat in your ear, so they’re comfortable even for side sleepers.

Pair these headphones with Philips’ Kokoon app, which will play sleep meditations, soundscapes, or whatever media you choose. The smart headphones will detect when you drift off to sleep, fade out your audio, and replace it with white noise to block out loud sounds.

These headphones are great for using on a plane. They drown out engine noise (and crying babies) and look like normal headphones.

Favorite Features:

  • Trademarked SnoreProtect technology that masks external sounds
  • Can be used as regular headphones when you’re not sleeping
  • Great library of white noise and relaxing audio in the app
  • Sleep-tracking technology helps you monitor the quality and amount of sleep you get each night

SleepPhones Wireless

sleepphones wireless in nighttide product image navy
Sleepphones

If both noise and light keep you awake, try a gadget that blocks out both, like the SleepPhones Wireless. The SleepPhones look like a headband but are designed to be worn over your eyes, eye mask style. Hidden inside the band are slim headphones that are flat and comfortable to lie on.

The headphones can stream any audio you choose via Bluetooth, helping you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

The SleepPhones are available in a fleece or “breeze” fabric—we recommend the lightweight and cooling breeze fabric if you’re a hot sleeper.

Favorite Features:

  • Option for eco-friendly packaging
  • Ability to stream your own media
  • Battery charge lasts 24 hours
  • Washable

Don’t need an umbrella since you’re headed to Palm Springs? Not bringing contact solution because your vision is 20/20? Customize the list by crossing off items you don’t need and adding any additional items in the “more items” boxes.

Don’t miss our downloadable, editable carry-on packing checklist below.

Carry-on Essentials

Don't Forget

Clothes and Shoes

While packing light is great, there are still a few essentials you need to make sure make it into your bag—think underwear, socks, pajamas, shirts, and pants. From there, you can get more specific based on your destination. Heading to the beach? Throw in a swimsuit. Vacationing somewhere colder? Gloves, hats, and scarves are a must. Keep in mind that clothing can take up a lot of space—if you’re planning on packing in only a carry-on, try wearing some of your bulkier items to free up precious room in your luggage.

Toiletries

Toiletries are another necessity of travel to keep you feeling fresh. You can find the standards—toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant—all available in TSA-approved travel-sized containers. Liquids should be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and fit into a clear, quart-size, zip-top plastic bag. To learn more about TSA rules, see Airport Security Frequently Asked Questions.

Once you have the basics packed, think about your individual routine. Don’t forget things like contact solution, period products, and daily medications. Curating your carry-on toiletry bag down to only essentials will help save space. Your one-in-a-million, go-to cleanser you can’t live without? Definitely throw it in your bag. Your extensive collection of handmade shower melts? Maybe save them for home.

Carry-On Essentials

Whether or not you’re checking additional luggage, there are a few items you should always keep with you. Important travel documents like your passport, ID, boarding pass, insurance cards, credit cards, and copy of your COVID-19 vaccination card should always stay with you in your personal item. Pricey items like cameras, SD cards, and laptops as well as items you may want to have on-hand at your destination like umbrellas, a guidebook, and your itinerary should be stowed safely in your carry-on.

Miscellaneous

Finally, don’t forget to pack items to pass time on the plane. Items like headphones, books, and magazines will keep you entertained for however many hours you’re in the air. Make sure to load up your device with podcasts, music, and audiobooks pre-flight while you’re still connected to reliable wi-fi. Other essentials like ear plugs, sleep masks, and travel pillows make sure you’re able to arrive at your destination well-rested.

Carry-On Bag Rules and Regulations

Attention to TSA regulations is important when packing a carry-on, especially if you plan to skip checking a bag. Liquids are subject to the 3-1-1 rule, meaning they must be less than 3.4oz in volume and fit into a clear quart-sized plastic bag. Some surprising substances, like peanut butter and shaving cream, qualify as liquids under this rule. When in doubt, check the TSA website to see if these restrictions apply to your items.

Alcohol purchased anywhere other than the duty-free shops at the airport are also subject to 3-1-1 regulations and additionally must be below 70% ABV (140 proof), so you may want to check a bag if you plan to bring back a couple bottles of wine as a souvenir.

Choosing the Right Carry-On Bag

Choosing the perfect carry-on bag is essential for maximizing packing space, especially if you plan to pack in a carry-on only. Be aware of airline carry-on size restrictions—US-based carriers typically only limit carry-on dimensions, but some international airlines regulate hand luggage weight as well.

A good carry-on will be lightweight, meet the size restrictions for most major airlines, and be easily maneuverable in a crowded airport.

Hardside Carry-On: AWAY Carry-On

Woman in brown suit with green AWAY carry-on
AWAY Travel

The classic Away Carry-On is a perennial favorite with seasoned travelers, with its 360 spinner wheels, compression straps, and underside grab handle for easy maneuverability. At 21.7 by 14.4 by 9 inches, it meets most major airlines’ hand luggage size limits. The Away Bigger Carry-On can fit even more, but it may be too large to count as a cabin bag on some airlines.

Softsided Carry-On: Eagle Creek 4-Wheel International Carry-On

The  International Carry-On from Eagle Creek is a half-inch smaller than their standard carry-on model—a world of difference when you’re fighting for space in the overhead bin. This soft-sided roller bag is made from recycled weather-resistant fabrics and has an easy-access external zipper pocket.

Extra Small Carry-On: CALPAK Mini Carry-On

The CALPAK Mini Carry-On is just 14 by 16 by 9 inches, just short of qualifying as a personal item on many airlines. This extra lightweight option is perfect for accommodating the weight limits on international airlines, short weekend travel, or as an additional bag for those already checking luggage. Check out our roundup of the ten top carry-ons under 6 pounds for other extra small options.

Carry-On Packing Strategies

Woman rolling clothes and packing them
boyloso | Adobe Stock

The roll vs. fold debate has been raging among travelers for years. While personal preference may have you strongly leaning one way or another, there is no single best practice when it comes to packing your bags. Heavyweight items like jeans and sweaters are best accommodated by folding or by lying flat at the top or bottom of your suitcase. Lightweight items like t-shirts, camisoles, and shorts can then be rolled up and used to fill in the remaining gaps. Small items like socks can be stored inside spare shoes.

You’ll need to get more creative if you’re traveling carry-on only. Wearing your bulkiest items during travel days won’t make for an overly comfy airplane outfit, but it will save you a lot of valuable suitcase space. Packing laundry detergent packets to do a quick wash in the hotel sink or using the hotel’s laundry service can minimize the amount of items you need to pack in the first place.

Make sure you don’t double up on items that are provided at your destination. For example, with the exception of a few European destinations, most hotels will provide a hair dryer in the room or at the front desk. If you don’t see an amenity listed online, you can call your accommodation ahead of time to inquire so you know what items you can cross off your hand luggage packing list.

Whether a long-haul flight or a weekend road trip, traveling demands more than just a sense of wanderlust—it requires the right attire. The best travel clothes for men strike an essential balance between comfort, functionality, and style, offering you the versatility to seamlessly transition from one destination to the next without missing a beat. From wrinkle-resistant shirts that emerge from stuffed carry-ons looking freshly pressed to versatile pants that effortlessly take you from a cramped flight straight to an elegant dinner, we’ve found the best travel clothing for men.

Our selections prioritize innovative fabrics that wick away moisture, resist odors, and maintain their shape even after hours of wear. These high-performance materials are engineered to keep you cool in sweltering climates and warm in chilly conditions, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever your journey might throw your way. But functionality doesn’t mean sacrificing style—each piece we’ve chosen boasts a timeless aesthetic that allows you to blend in with locals and look good in your travel photos.

Kuhl AirKuhl Polo Shirt

Looking for a shirt you could wear climbing, hiking, or strolling around a city? Kuhl’s AirKuhl Polo Shirt can do it all, thanks to its abrasion and snag-resistant fabric, which offers a blend of comfort, functionality, and sun protection.

Kuhl

This ultra-soft and lightweight fabric feels very airy, and the moisture-wicking properties help manage sweat during warmer days or more strenuous activities. The polo’s open-air construction enhances breathability, which, combined with its odor-resistant qualities, helps maintain freshness throughout extended wear—a key feature for those who don’t want to waste time doing laundry on their trip.

DUER Weightless Poplin AC Pants

There are some destinations where shorts just aren’t appropriate, but you still need to stay cool. The solution: DUER’s Weightless Poplin AC Pants, made out of an airy fabric that weighs a mere 3.5 ounces. Breathable and quick-drying, these are the pants you should pack for hot European cities, hikes, or safaris.

In addition to the amazing fabric, the Weightless pants are packed with practical features, such as a zippered security pocket, elasticated waistband, and signature gusset for an extended range of movement.

Highland Duds Charleston Long Sleeve Shirt

The Charleston Long Sleeve Shirt from Highland Duds is a versatile and stylish addition to any traveler’s wardrobe. Crafted from 100 percent cotton seersucker, a material known for its breathability, this button-down will keep you cool in warm climates. With a subtle stripe pattern, this button-down is equally suitable for casual outings or more dressy occasions.

What sets this shirt apart is its thoughtful design, tailored for the modern adventurer. The medium-weight fabric balances durability and comfort, while the adaptable length allows it to be worn either tucked or untucked. The engraved logo buttons and the striped logo ribbon elevate the shirt into a fashionable piece you’ll want to pack for every trip.

Mott & Bow Slim Wooster Jeans

Jeans take up a lot of space in your suitcase, so it’s ideal to wear them on the plane. However, most jeans are too stiff and uncomfortable for that to be a viable option—unless they’re Mott & Bow’s Slim Wooster Jeans. Crafted from a blend of cotton, polyester, elastane, and dynamic stretch technology, these pants are stretchy and comfortable but maintain their shape and won’t be saggy by the end of your trip.

Mott & Bow

With a slim design through the hips and slightly tapered at the hem, these pants create a long, lean silhouette that’s timeless instead of trendy.

Orvis Sun Defense Long-Sleeve Shirt

If you’re planning a beach or boating trip, packing sunscreen might not cut it in the sun protection department. Instead, we recommend bringing Orvis’ Sun Defense Hoodie, which has built-in UPF 50 protection. This lightweight hoodie is made from an anti-NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) yarn, which reflects heat and actually keeps you cooler than wearing short sleeves.

Orvis

This level of sun protection, combined with the integrated thumb loops and stretch binding around the hood, will keep you from getting burned (even if you wear it in the water).

Shore Charles Linen Camp Shirt

Linen is one of the very best fabrics for summer travel, as it’s cooler than cotton. However, pure linen can wrinkle quite easily and be somewhat stiff, making it less than ideal for long travel days. Shore solves this problem with its Charles Linen Camp Shirt, which is made from a blend of premium linen, viscose, and spandex, that allows the shirt to pack well, move with you, and keep you cool.

Navigating airport security can be a stressful ordeal, but choosing the right footwear can help make the experience just a little bit easier. You don’t want to be that traveler that holds up the entire security line because your boots set off the security alarm or you can’t get your complicated shoes off fast enough.

Your shoes will carry you from your home to your destination, so be sure to pick footwear that’s not only TSA-friendly but also comfortable to wear during your entire journey. We’ve put together expert tips on which shoe to wear to the airport, along with recommendations for editor-approved options.

Tips for Choosing the Best Shoe to Wear to the Airport

When you’re deciding which shoes to wear to the airport, there are a few things to look for:

  1. Only wear shoes you’ll wear again on your trip
  2. Don’t wear shoes or boots with lots of metal, as they can set off scanner alarms
  3. Pick footwear that is easy to take on and off (although this is less of a concern if you have TSA PreCheck and can leave your shoes on during screening)
  4. Choose shoes that will be comfortable on the plane
  5. Wear shoes that are comfortable for walking, as you may have to walk long distances between gates
  6. If you’re short on packing space, wear your bulkiest boots on the plane
  7. Headed on an important hiking trip? Always wear your hiking boots on the plane in case your luggage gets lost. You don’t want to have to try to break in a new pair of boots on a bucket list hike.

Rothy’s RS02 Sneaker

I wear Rothy’s RS02 Sneaker on literally every trip that I go on, and have been stopped multiple times in the airport by strangers asking me where I got my shoes. These sneakers are the perfect travel shoe for several reasons:

  1.  They’re machine washable, so I throw them in the wash after every trip, and they never look dirty or smell
  2. Made from a stretchy knit material (derived from recycled plastic bottles), they comfortably accommodate swollen feet during flights
  3. Their flexible design allows you to slip them on and off easily without untying them, ideal for airport security
  4. The cushioned insole provides comfort and support for long days on your feet

I’m particularly enthusiastic about Rothy’s latest version, which has a partially perforated upper to enhance airflow and is great for summer trips.

The RS02 sneakers are available in a men’s version as well.

If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, or if you’re traveling back to the United States from another country, you should be prepared to take your shoes off at airport security. This won’t be a problem if you’re wearing OluKai’s Lae’ahi Lil’li Leather Sneakers, which feature the brand’s trademarked collapsible drop-in heel. This unique design looks normal when you’re wearing the shoe but allows the heel to fold down to convert it into a mule so you can slide them seamlessly on and off to pass through airport security.

These full-grain waterproof leather sneakers are waterproof, so you can confidently pack these for trips with rain in the forecast. Our tester raved about the shoes’ microfiber lining, which was breathable (so you don’t have to be that person taking their shoes off on the plane) but still felt cozy and comfortable.

OluKai makes a women’s version of these shoes, called the Pehuea Li’lli Sneakers

Toms Classic Alpagarta

One SmarterTravel editor recommends wearing Toms’ Classic Alpagarta shoes for any type of travel, but especially for flying. The slip-on design makes the shoes easy to take on and off, allowing you to breeze through security.

Made from a soft textile fabric, the Alpagartas are very lightweight and comfortable on long flights, and the latex arch insert gives great support for walking once you get off the plane.

The Alpagarta style is available in men’s as well.

Viscata Rubina Espadrille Flats

Whether you’re flying first class (or just want to look like you are), sometimes you need a dressier shoe that will carry you through to a nice dinner or meeting at your destination when you land. Don’t sacrifice comfort for style—just opt for Viscata’s Rubina Espadrille Flats.

The slip-on design is ideal for passing through airport security, and the minimal heel adds just the right amount of lift without being uncomfortable. These espadrilles are handmade in Spain, and I can verify that you’ll fit in while wearing them in Europe.

The canvas material is breathable and doesn’t require a breaking-in period. It can also be wiped down for easy cleaning.
