With warm weather and long sunny days, the summer season simply begs to be spent outside. Whether you’re planning a beach vacation, a mountain getaway, or a leisurely staycation, these are the editor-approved essentials you’ll want to bring to make your summer travels better.

Anymaka Hammock Kit

Anymaka’s Hammock Kit
https://www.anymaka.com/

Nothing says “summer relaxation” like lounging in a hammock. Upgrade your experience with Anymaka’s Hammock Kit. This portable hammock stand is perfect for travel since you can set it up anywhere within seconds (no need to find two perfect trees to hang from). It’s great to bring to a vacation rental with a backyard or a campground.

The hammock stand is made from aircraft-grade aluminum, which is actually quite lightweight. This makes it easy to load and unload into your car and carry until you find a good spot. We didn’t have any trouble lifting the hammock stand on our own.

Although the Anymaka hammock stand looks like it requires a lot of assembly, it’s actually super easy. We set it up in under a minute—simply unfold the stand, snap it into place, and lock in the hammock using the included carabiners.

The hammock stand adjusts to multiple positions, so you can lounge sitting up or lying down. We highly recommend splurging on the full-pack enhanced kit, which includes a travel bag with padded shoulder straps for easy carrying, a double hammock, a cup holder, a canopy kit, and an insect net.

We tested out the hammock kit in New England, where black flies can be vicious in the summer, and the insect net was amazing and protected us from bugs and bites while still being able to enjoy being outside. Likewise, the sun shade is a great addition on days when the sun is extra strong and you want to relax without burning or overheating.

Teva Original Universal Slim Sandals

Teva’s Original Universal Sandals are beloved among travelers for their light weight, comfort, and ability to transition from water activities to dry land effortlessly. These cult favorite sandals have recently gotten a minimalist makeover, with slimmed-down straps in the Original Universal Slim version that make these shoes even more versatile.

The new, smaller straps make these Tevas ones you can pack for any type of trip, from European vacations to festivals, since they look more casual and stylish than the hiker-vibe the original sandals give off.

We tried them out and found that they were just as comfortable as the old version—and also appreciated the built-in peppermint-based anti-odor treatment that comes in handy when packing these on hot weather trips.

Coolibar Kitts Shirt Dress UPF 50+

Coolibar Kitts Shirt Dress
Coolibar

Save your skin from the summer sun with Coolibar’s Kitts Shirt Dress. This classy dress has a UPF 50+ fabric, so you don’t have to worry about constantly reapplying sunscreen. The lightweight Aire fabric feels as light as air and looks like silk. The dress comes with a removable tie belt, helping you to get a custom fit.

Wear this versatile dress as a beach cover-up or out to dinner—it will look good in any situation.

Kuhl Freeflex Shorts

https://www.kuhl.com/

We’ve been hunting for the best shorts for summer activities and finally found them in Kuhl’s Freeflex Shorts. These shorts are the perfect 4-inch length—long enough to be appropriate for most settings but not so long that they’re unflattering or frumpy.

Made from a quick-drying, moisture-wicking material with UPF 50+ sun protection, the Freeflex shorts are packable and perfect for hikes or walks.

Best of all, the shorts have four pockets: two concealed zip pockets in the front and two chino-style pockets in the back.

Snoozeband Pro

SnoozeBand™ Pro 2.0 - Bluetooth Sleep Mask
https://www.snoozeband.co/

Long summer days mean the sun rises earlier in the morning, waking you up well before your alarm clock—especially if you’re staying in a hotel or vacation rental with flimsy curtains. To cope, we’re packing the Snoozeband Pro on all of our summer trips. This sleep mask not only blocks out light, but it has ultra-thin headphones built-in, so you can listen to white noise or relaxing music to help block out sounds and sleep better.

The rechargeable battery lasts up to 15 hours so you can get a full night’s sleep. The mask’s 3D eye cups won’t restrict your eye movement (or mess up your eyelashes), helping you to sleep better.

Bilby Headlamp

Bilby 400 Headlamp
https://www.knog.com/

One cardinal rule of hiking safety is to always carry a light source with you, even if you plan to return well before dark. (And no, your phone’s flashlight doesn’t count.) If you get lost, hurt, or otherwise delayed, a light is crucial safety equipment to help you light your way home.

That’s why we always keep the Bilby 400 Headlamp in our daypack, just in case. This ultra-bright headlamp features 400 lumens and a beam that can reach over 300 feet  (which will not only help you see well in the dark but can be used to signal rescuers.)

The Bilby is rechargeable and has an easy-to-see battery indicator that helps us see if the headlamp needs to be charged before we head out. Other cool features include a silicone strap that can be wiped clean, an electronic tilt function that lights up where we’re looking, and multiple light options that can be programmed via an app.

Oleu Boardshirt

https://oleuoriginals.com

If you’ve ever emerged from the water after a day of snorkeling with an epic sunburn on your back, you know that swimming in a shirt can sometimes be a better solution than having to keep reapplying sunscreen. Most shirts aren’t water-friendly though, which is why we’re packing Oleu’s Boardshirts for all our beach trips from now on.

Made from a UPF 50+ fabric, these shirts are designed to be comfortable in and out of the water. The snap-front shirt can be worn open or closed and dries extremely quickly, so you can wear it from the ocean to the bar.

Osea Discovery Travel Set

Osea Discovery Travel Set
https://oseamalibu.com/

When impromptu summer trips arise, we’re prepared with Osea’s Bestsellers Discovery Set. We keep this kit stocked so that we can grab it and throw it in our suitcase without repacking essential toiletries every time we travel.

This four-piece set is perfectly sized for air travel (with everything well under the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule) and comes in a nice, zippered bag to keep everything organized.

The set includes everything you need to keep your skincare routine going while on the road: Undaria Algae Body Oil, Hyaluronic Sea Serum, Seabiotic Water Cream, and Ocean Cleanser.

Charleston Shoe Company Gladys Sandals

https://charlestonshoeco.com

Sandals are a summer style essential, but most of them look much worse for wear by the end of the season—that’s why we love Charleston Shoe Company’s Gladys Sandal. These espadrilles are machine washable, so you can keep them clean and fresh no matter how many miles you walk in them.

The mini one-inch wedge is the ideal height for travel, as it can be worn up or down and is just as comfortable as a flat shoe.

Orvis DriCast Quarter-Zip Pullover Shirt

Orvis DriCast Quarter-Zip Pullover Shirt
https://www.orvis.com/

Some sun-protective clothing can feel stiff, but Orvis’ new DriCast fabric feels just like a comfortable t-shirt. Orvis’ DriCast Quarter-Zip, available in men’s and women’s specific fits, is lightweight enough to wear on hot summer days for extra UPF protection.

The material is sweat-wicking, quick-drying, breathable, and equipped with Orvis’ trademarked OutSmart Fresh fabric which resists odors—so you can wear it multiple times on one trip. The quarter-zip comes in lots of bright and fun colors and patterns that are great for livening up your summer wardrobe.

Nisolo Huarache Sandals

Nisolo Huarache Sandals
https://nisolo.com/

Huarache Sandals are the ideal summer shoe, offering the airy ventilation of a sandal with the protection and comfort of a shoe. Nisolo’s Huaraches, available for men and women, are our favorite pair, thanks to their soft, handwoven leather—which is even water-resistant.

The slip-on design is excellent for travel days, and the shock-absorbing foam midsole provides plenty of cushioning to make these comfortable for long walks. Dress these sandals up or down—they work with shorts, dresses, jeans, and pretty much any outfit.

Uniqlo Linen Blend Pants

Uniqlo Linen Blend Pants
https://www.uniqlo.com/

Linen is a classic summer fabric for a good reason—it’s light, cooling, and easy to wear. Our editors are a big fan of Uniqlo’s Linen-Blend Relaxed Pants, an affordable option for hot days when you don’t want to wear shorts. These pants are great for long flights, with loose-fitting legs and an elastic waistband.

Roll up the cuffs to customize these pants to the perfect length (and add a touch of style.)

SeaVees Cardinal Sneaker

Cardinal Sneaker in White
https://www.seavees.com

A classic white sneaker is the most versatile shoe you can own for summer, and we’re wearing SeaVees Cardinal Sneaker on repeat. This popular shoe combines comfort and style—as a nod to the brand’s history, it incorporates vintage-inspired webbing reminiscent of the original 1960s SeaVees. The distinctive sport logo on the tongue gives it a unique flair that elevates it from being a boring white sneaker.

A cushiony memory foam insole, padded collar, and deep cupsole design provide exceptional support that will have you racking up the miles on foot.

Neutrogena Sunscreen Stick

Neutrogena Sunscreen Stick
Amazon

Our editor recommends keeping Neutrogena’s Sunscreen Stick in your bag so you’ll be prepared for outdoor summer lunches, unexpectedly long walks, or any other scenarios where you’ll wish you had sunscreen.

The stick format is easy to apply and mess-free and is perfect for travel since there’s no risk of spillage.

OluKai Tiare Strappy Sandals

OluKai

OluKai’s Tiare Strappy Leather Sandals offer a perfect blend of elegance and comfort, making them an ideal choice for formal and casual occasions. The sandals feature a premium all-leather construction with a buttery-soft texture that doesn’t require a break-in period. We love that the straps and toe posts are cushioned so they won’t dig into your feet. Flip the shoes over, and you’ll discover an ocean wave-inspired pattern that’s not only stylish but provides exceptional traction.

Whether paired with a favorite dress for a night out or worn during a stylish day around town, the Tiare Strappy can be worn multiple times on your trip.

Only Hydration

Only Hydration
Only Hydration

Flights are notoriously dehydrating, so be sure to stash a few packets of Only Hydration electrolyte mixes in your carry-on this summer. Available in a single-serve, powdered mix format, you can easily take Only Hydration through airport security and then pour them into your water bottle or in-flight beverage.

The drink mixes contain a blend of electrolytes, vitamins, and superfruits to help hydrate you better than water. I love Only Hydration for travel because it doesn’t use artificial flavors or sweeteners and has only 3 grams of sugar.

Supersmile Extra Whitening System

Supersmile
Supersmile

When you pack Supersmile’s Extra Whitening System, you’ll be proud to show off your smile in your vacation snapshots. This two-pack features a whitening toothpaste and an extra whitening accelerator that freshens your breath while safely removing stains and yellowing. Despite the whitening power, Supersmile doesn’t result in tooth sensitivity.

It comes in a travel-friendly 2.5-ounce size that’s perfect for longer trips.

Bug Bite Thing

Bug Bite Thing
Bug Bite Thing

Bug bites and stings are an unfortunate side effect of any summer vacation. Make them less painful and itchy by packing the Bug Bite Thing on your next trip. This small tool works by removing insect venom, saliva, and other irritants left under the skin after a bug attack.

Simply place the tool over the bug bite, pull up on the handles to create suction, hold for 10-20 seconds, and release for instant relief.

They don’t call it America the Beautiful for nothing. The most beautiful places in America include some little-known yet bucket-list-worthy natural wonders across the U.S. and its territories. These 11 lesser-known spots include lush forests, tropical islands, and towering mountains—and are sure to inspire your travels.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

You probably already know about otherwordly American national park landscapes like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone’s geysers, but what about sand mountains akin to the ones on Mars? The giant desert peaks of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve include Star Dune, which stands 750 feet tall. Located in Colorado, Great Sand Dune is a hiking or horseback-riding challenge that’s also home to kid-friendly offerings like sand boarding and Medano Creek’s swimming hole.

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Tropical American beauty in the Caribbean is on full display in Vieques, a small island in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Accessible via plane from San Juan on the mainland, Vieques is a well-preserved island with few waterfront hotels where you can hike to hidden beaches like Vieques National Wildlife Refuge’s Pata Prieta. The island is also home to friendly wild horses that roam protected areas and sometimes wander into more tourist-frequented spots. Vieques also has one of the world’s few bioluminescent bays, Mosquito Bay.

Where to Stay: El Blok Hotel

Bar Harbor, Maine

Whether you’re more at home in the 47,000-acre Acadia National Park or its cozy coastal town of Bar Harbor, Acadia’s signature New England beauty combines evergreen-capped mountains with sandy beaches and rocky coastlines. Its peaks include one of the first places to see the sunrise in the United StatesCadillac Mountain. If you’re more of a beachgoer than a hiker, though, there’s plenty to choose from as well, including Jordan Pond and Sand Beach Park.

Where to Stay: West Street Hotel

Devil’s Bridge Trailhead, Arizona

Arizona’s Grand Canyon aside, one of the most beautiful places in America is the adrenaline-spiking hike in Sedona that includes the natural wonder of Devil’s Bridge. The hike itself is 1.8 miles round-trip and given a moderate difficulty rating. Roughly three-quarters of a mile from the parking lot, hikers are given the option of two forking paths to continue their trek, one of which will take them across the titular Devil’s Bridge.

Where to Stay: Ambiente Sedona

Nā Pali Coast, Kauai

Hawaii is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places in America, thanks to its unique topography and isolated location in the Pacific. But one stretch of island in particular stands out: Kauai’s Nā Pali Coast. Running 15 miles along the northwest coast of Kauai, the Nā Pali Coast offers sea caves, waterfalls, and cliffs as high as 4,000 feet above sea level. See the landscape from above at the lookouts at Kokee State Park, or book a helicopter tour for a true aerial view.

Where to Stay: Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, Autograph Collection

Lost River Cave, Kentucky

You’ve probably heard of Mammoth Cave National Park, the largest underground cave system in the world, but what about Lost River Cave, also in Kentucky? An underground river in Bowling Green, the Lost River Caves are a natural wonder with intriguing history: The caves are where fugitive Jesse James hid out on his run from the law, and are believed to have also functioned as shelter to Native American tribes. Explore the cave by boat or book a zipline tour through the surrounding wilderness.

Where to Stay: Fairfield Inn & Suites Bowling Green

The Florida Barrier Reef

The only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States is Florida’s, which stretches from the Florida Keys to the Marquesa Keys, making it the third-largest coral barrier reef system in the world. But it’s a natural wonder in danger: Florida Keys officials have banned non-biodegradable sunscreens in an effort to save the reef from damage caused by both climate change and toxic chemicals in our oceans.

Where to Stay: Courtyard by Marriott Key West Waterfront

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Yellowstone-adjacent Jackson Hole, known for its cowboy landscapes and snowy peaks, is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. The forested valley is marked by Grand Teton National Park’s mountains, massive elk herds of the 25,000-acre National Elk Refuge, and rushing whitewater rapids on the Snake River that are perfect for rafting. In winter, Jackson Hole is also a favorite for skiing dramatic peaks like Corbet’s Couloir, one of the world’s most famous (and dangerous) ski runs.

Where to Stay: The Lodge at Jackson Hole

Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Christopher Gardiner/Shutterstock

A list of the most beautiful places in America has to include the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area’s Multnomah Falls. Tourists flock to Benson Footbridge halfway up the misty falls to get close to the rushing water. Heading to the gorge early in the morning is best because it means you’ll get the perpetually crowded Multnomah Falls almost entirely to yourself.

Where to Stay: Columbia Cliff Villas Hotel

Denali National Park, Alaska

A favorite among National Parks Service rangers, Denali National Park is home to North America’s tallest peak. Its six million acres of Alaskan wilderness include tundra, forest, and glaciers. The park is as visited for its sprawling vistas as it is for its abundant Alaskan wildlife, from moose and grizzly bears to sheep, caribou, and 165 species of birds.

Where to Stay: Cabins at Denali

National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa

Don’t forget Samoa, a Pacific U.S. territory that’s home to a wealth of natural wonders ranging from volcanic peaks to aqua-blue swimming holes. American Samoa is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in America and stretches over five islands and two atolls.

Surround yourself with natural beauty on rainforest hikes, humpback whale-watching cruises, and coral reef snorkeling at the National Marine Sanctuary via Fagatele Bay.

Regional upticks in shark sightings and headline-grabbing incidents may have travelers wary of the water. If you’re planning on a beach vacation this summer, here’s what you need to know about shark safety before you get in the water.

Shark Attack Facts

Shark attacks last year were slightly above the five-year annual global average but still within a reasonable year-to-year variation, according to the International Shark Attack File. This database is maintained by scientists at the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida and measures shark attacks over the years, dividing them into unprovoked and provoked incidents, broken down by country and fatal vs. non-fatal. Keep in mind that your risk of being killed in a shark attack is miniscule—approximately 1 in 4,332,817.

Shark Safety Tips: How to Avoid Attacks

Sharks aren’t out to get you—in fact, they aren’t really interested in humans at all. Most attacks occur when a shark mistakes a human for a seal or other food source, so you want to avoid looking like a snack in the ocean. To avoid attacks, follow these shark safety tips:

  • Swim, surf, or paddle in groups, as most shark attacks target a solo person.
  • Stay close to shore in case you need help, but also know that sharks often hunt in shallow water.
  • Avoid being in the water at dusk or dawn, as these times are when sharks are more active and visibility is low.
  • Don’t make yourself ultra-visable: Sharks are attracted to contrasts. The International Shark Attack File scientists discourage wearing shiny jewelry (which can resemble fish scales), entering murky water, wearing bright-colored clothing, or showing off tan lines.
  • Do not enter the water near fishermen, as the sharks may be attracted to the bait.
  • Keep dogs out of the water.
  • Avoid areas near sandbars or steep drop-offs, which are where sharks tend to congregate.
  • Do not swim near seals or large schools of fish.
  • Try to avoid erratic movements, flailing, or splashing in the water.
  • Always listen to lifeguards and heed all signs and warning flags at a beach.
  • Check shark activity in your area before entering the water.

Do Shark Deterrents Work?

There’s no shortage of products out there that claim to be able to protect you from a shark attack. You can purchase bracelets or even electric devices if you want to feel safer in the water. But according to Tyler Bowling, Manager of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History, these products are not effective 100 percent of the time: “Many of the shark deterrent devices on the market have been shown to have an effect on larger species such as white and tiger sharks. Additionally, these products are not tested on a large number of species. So what deters a tiger shark might not deter a cookiecutter shark and so on.”

How to Survive a Shark Attack

Most shark bites are accidental—the shark has mistaken a human for food and will let the victim go after the first bite. If the shark continues to attack, here’s what to do:

  • Fight back by hitting the shark in its most sensitive areas (the eyes, snout, or gills).
  • Get out of the water as soon as possible, as a shark may return for a second attack.
  • When swimming away, keep your movements as smooth and calm as possible to avoid attracting the shark’s attention again.

As the cold winter months fade, many of us find our daydreams drifting to warm sandy beaches and the prospect of a relaxing summer getaway. However, popular coastal destinations can come with a premium price tag, quickly putting those visions of an affordable beach vacation out of reach.

Fortunately, a recent study by the travel experts at Divein aims to uncover the most affordable beach spots across the country. To determine the cheapest beach vacation destinations, the Divein team analyzed the median cost for popular American beach destinations for a six-night hotel stay for two adults, along with typical meal and beer prices.

The findings highlight the nation’s most inexpensive beach destinations, which deliver big value for a small cost. For those looking to indulge their summer wanderlust without breaking the bank, these enticing locales deserve a spot at the top of your list.

These are the cheapest U.S. beach destinations where you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

Twelvemile Beach, Michigan

Topping the list as the most budget-friendly beach destination is Twelvemile Beach in Michigan. As you may have guessed, this area is home to a 12-mile-long stretch of gorgeous sand beach along the shores of Lake Superior.

For those looking to keep costs as low as possible, Twelvemile Beach has a very affordable and popular campground where you can sleep right on the beach. Still, if you’re looking for a few more amenities, nearby hotel stays average just $464 for six nights. Visitors can enjoy affordable meals for around $20 and beers for $7.50 while enjoying the untouched natural beauty.

Mustang Island State Park, Texas

Mustang Island State Park in Texas is not far behind Twelvemile Beach in affordability. This state park gem delivers the classic Texas beach experience without the inflated prices found at many popular tourist areas.

Mustang Island

For travelers really looking to maximize their savings, Mustang Island has budget-friendly overnight options right within the park’s boundaries. There are 48 campsites with water and electricity, as well as 50 primitive sites for a more rustic experience. If you’d rather stay in a hotel, there are numerous ones available nearby for less than $100 per night.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Known for its great waves and beautiful sand, Wrightsville Beach is America’s third most affordable beach destination. Voted as one of the top surfing towns in the world by National Geographic and one of the best SUP hubs in the U.S. by Outside Magazine, Wrightsville Beach is a paradise for watersports lovers. This walkable island offers plenty to do on land as well, including The Loop fitness trail, beachside yoga, or shopping in the open-air villages.

Located a short drive from Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach offers an affordable oceanfront escape, with meals costing around $15 and beer at just $4. A six-night hotel stay costs an average of just $636 for the entire week.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The area around Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Massachusetts, is a surprisingly affordable beach destination. This classic Cape Cod beach is the start of what Henry David Thoreau named the “Great Beach,” a beautiful, long stretch of sandy coastline that stretches for over 20 miles. With sandy shores and relatively calm waves, this beach is popular for swimming during the summer.

Coast Guard Beach

Coast Guard Beach is part of the National Seashore in Massachusetts, so you won’t find a mega beachfront resort here. Instead, venture to the surrounding towns, where you can find small bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels that will only cost an average of $651 for a six-night stay.

Sand Beach, Acadia National Park, Maine

For a less traditional but still affordable beach vacation, head to Sand Beach, located within Acadia National Park in Maine. Although it’s not your typical hot-weather beach destination (brace yourself for chilly water even in August), this unique setting offers a distinctly New England coastal experience that’s popular with national park visitors.

As the name implies, Sand Beach stands out with its rare swath of soft sand—it’s the largest beach along Acadia’s iconic rocky shoreline. Stay past sunset to enjoy the best of Sand Beach—this remote destination is an incredible spot for stargazing.

Since there are no lodges or hotels within Acadia’s borders, beach-goers must stay outside the park in one of the many charming towns nearby. Opt for a hotel on the outskirts of Bar Harbor (where most people stay to visit Acadia) to find the best deals.

Overpacking is the quickest way to start your European trip off on the wrong foot. Charming cobblestone streets, boutique hotels without elevators, and packed public transportation mean you don’t want to be hauling around an oversized suitcase.

A streamlined European packing list is essential—you want to look good in all your photos in front of famous sites, blend in with local fashion, and be comfortable for miles of walking every day.

We’ve put together the ultimate European summer packing list for smarter travelers to follow—you’ll be comfortable, stylish, and mobile (without that giant checked bag).

Clothing

Jeans

Summer weather in Europe can be fickle, so packing a good pair of jeans is always smart in case the temperatures drop in the evening. Mott & Bow’s Slim Boyfriend Jeans are made from a soft, lightweight twill denim fabric that’s lighter and more comfortable than regular denim.

The white jeans help keep your outfit looking summery, and by some miracle, Mott & Bow’s jeans aren’t see-through like most white pants.

Light Shirt/Scarf

If you’re visiting any religious/historical sites in Europe, you may be asked to cover your shoulders and knees out of respect. Keep a lightweight scarf with you so you can comply on an impromptu visit without overheating during the rest of the day.

Dresses

Dresses are the most versatile piece of clothing you can pack for your European trip, as they can be worn with sneakers during the day or made fancier at night with heels. For hot summers, you can’t beat linen—Quince’s 100 percent European Linen Button Front Dress was practically designed for European trips.

Made from breathable and heat-regulating linen, the dress will keep you cool. The removable belt and functional buttons give you multiple looks with just one piece of clothing and best of all, the dress features pockets.

Tops

Cozy Earth’s Coastal Comfort Mock Neck Short Sleeve Button Down is the perfect mix of casual and pulled-together. Made from a blend of tencel and linen, this top is ultra-breathable and feels significantly cooler than cotton.

The fabric uses an enhanced weave that helps prevent pilling, so this shirt will still look brand-new after many trips.

Swimsuit

Since they take up such minimal space, you’ll never regret packing a swimsuit. There are so many beaches, lakes, and even hotel pools to explore in Europe, you won’t want to miss any opportunity for a dip.

If you tend to burn easily, and don’t want to be bothered frequently getting out of the water to reapply, the Eddie Bauer Long-Sleeve One Piece Swimsuit swimsuit is a great option—the floral print and zipper keep it cute, while the extra coverage gives you plenty of sun protection.

Lightweight Pants

A lightweight pair of pants can protect you from the sun, keep you covered for historical church visits, and help you look like a local (if you choose the right ones). Ditch the heavy denim in favor of something with a bit more stretch, like Mott & Bow’s Twill Chinos

These pants have just the right of flexibility but are structured enough that they won’t get baggy halfway through your trip. The khaki color is perfect for summer, and can be dressed up or down depending on your plans for the day.

Accessories

Crossbody Purse

The perfect purse for Europe can be worn crossbody style (which makes it harder to steal), goes with any outfit, is versatile, and is big enough to hold the essentials (but not too large, since you’ll be carrying it all day).

Quince’s Italian Leather Quilted Wallet Crossbody ticks all the boxes. Made from soft Italian leather, the purse will be right at home in Europe, and the quilted design works well from day to night. The bag can be worn as a crossbody, or you can remove the chain to use it as a clutch.

Coin Purse

Coin purses have fallen out of fashion in the US, but they can come in handy in Europe, where lower denominations of currency are in coins instead of bills. Don’t end up with a heavy stash of coins buried in your bag—keep your change organized and accessible in a zippered pouch

Hat

Keep the sun off of your face and your outfit looking stylish with a sun hat. These packable options from Madewell are perfect, since they can be stuffed in your bag (without getting destroyed) when you’re not wearing them.

Refillable Water Bottle

Although tap water is safe to drink in Europe, it’s not commonly offered for free at restaurants (you’ll likely have a choice of bottled still or sparkling water instead). However, in some destinations, you may find public drinking fountains readily available. Save money (and the environment) by packing your own reusable water bottle, like this one from LARQ, which automatically cleans itself using UV technology.

The LARQ bottle comes in both an insulated and non-insulated version, so you can choose between having a light weight to carry or having perfectly chilled beverages all day long.

Footwear

Sandals

Pack a pair of sandals you can wear to the beach, hotel pool, and for short walks. Ipanema’s Trendy Sandals feature a minimalist style that will blend in anywhere. The lightweight sandals are made from PVC so they can be easily rinsed off after every wear.

Sneakers

You’ll spot chunky white sneakers on the feet of many stylish Europeans this summer. Join the crowd with New Balance’s classic 550 sneakers. The low top and clean silhouette go with everything from jeans to dresses, and there’s plenty of arch support and cushioning to keep you comfortable.

Socks

Pack no-show socks that will actually stay up if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. These ones from Bombas have grips on the heel that help to keep them in place.

Toiletries/Miscellaneous

In addition to the same toiletries you’d pack for any destination (toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, etc.) here are some important ones to remember for Europe:

Sunscreen

Even if you’re not hitting the beach in Europe, sunscreen is still a must-pack for summer trips. Sun Bum smells good and doesn’t leave a white cast, so you’ll forget you’re wearing it.

Tissues

A travel-sized pack of tissues can come in handy for more than just the sniffles (like at a public bathroom that’s run out of toilet paper.)

Medications

In some European destinations, you’ll have to visit an actual pharmacy to purchase even over-the-counter medications, and these pharmacies tend to have somewhat limited hours.

Pack sample-size packets of medicines just in case, so you don’t have to waste time hunting down a pharmacy if you have a headache or stomachache.

Electronics

oatawa | Adobe Stock

Headphones

Don’t forget to pack a pair of headphones for the long flight over from the United States. Skullcandy’s Push Active Earbuds are wireless but still secure (in case you plan on working out while you’re on vacation).

The earbuds are voice-controlled, so you don’t have to stop what you’re doing to change songs or take a phone call.

Adapter

Appliances in Europe run on 220 volts, while ones in America use 110 volts. Fortunately, most modern appliances (like iPhones) automatically switch voltage, so you won’t need to worry about bringing an electricity converter (but double-check your electronics before trying to use them abroad).

However, you will need to pack an adapter in order to use standard plugs in Europe.

Portable Charger

It’s easy to run down the battery on your phone when you’re snapping pictures and taking video to capture all the memories—and constantly using maps to figure out directions. A portable charger can revive your battery without you having to go back to the hotel or find a place to plug it in.

Travel Documents

As with any trip, don’t forget these important travel documents:

  • Passport
  • Copies of passport (you can scan them to your phone or the cloud instead of carrying paper)

Money

Although most places in Europe accept credit cards, you’re still likely to find a few cash-only destinations, so make sure you bring some cash with you.

When you are using a credit card, make sure you’re choosing one that doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee, as those can quickly add up.

“One man’s trash is another’s treasure,” says the old adage, and this may be truest of all for lovers of sea glass.

An unusually attractive consequence of littering, sea glass is created when bottles, ship lights, and other pieces of glass are discarded in the ocean. Tossed around and broken apart by the currents, the edges and surfaces become frosty and pitted from the saline content of the water. In time, these broken bits and pieces are washed ashore and become a hot commodity for sea glass seekers, who incorporate them into art pieces, jewelry, and home décor.

Some colors are more sought after than others; reds, purples, and oranges are particularly difficult to find. And of course, the glass comes in a variety of shapes and sizes ranging from identifiable bottlenecks to tiny round marbles. What you find will depend on the location you’re hunting in—a beach near an old beer brewery will offer different sea glass than one near an art glass factory.

The sea glass community used to keep the knowledge of where to find their precious treasure a close secret. But nowadays the community is large and thriving online, and the information is shared freely around the world. Here’s a list of some of the best places in the world to find sea glass.

United Kingdom and Ireland

Path leading to Seaham Beach
Path leading to Seaham Beach | Anthony | Adobe StockAnthony | Adobe Stock

The coastlines of the United Kingdom and Ireland have a reputation for being the place to find sea glass. Seaham Beach may be the most famous of these; according to By The Sea jewelry, sea glass here originated not only from nearby glasswork factories such as Londonderry Bottleworks, but also Hartley Wood & Co, a specialty art glass manufacturer. As a result, sea glass hunters can find not only the typical bottle-colored fragments of glass, but also unusual multicolored streaked glass pieces.

The region of Devon is well-known for Devonshire cream teas, Agatha Christie, and, uniquely, the county’s two sets of English coastlines, north and south. Brooding, rocky Bovisand Beach on the southern coastline is a sea glass lover’s paradise. Hunters can sift through the sand on the beach or explore the many tide pools to find little bits of treasure.

In Ireland, travel up along the Wild Atlantic Way to Lisfannon Beach in County Donegal. This is a very long drive to a very remote destination indeed, unless you’re already visiting Northern Ireland. However, it is a beautifully moody stretch of beach with little clutches of glass gems tucked in amongst the rocks. By virtue of its remote location, tourist traffic can be lower here, so treasure hauls can border on epic in size.

Scotland and Wales are not to be left out, either. Picturesque fishing region East Neuk in Fife is awash in sea glass and lovely bits of painted pottery. Wales’ Conwy Morfa Beach, thanks to a nearby Victorian-era dumping site, often yields some truly vintage pieces of glass in an array of colors.

The United States of America

Beach at Crystal Cove State Park

Glass Beach at Fort Bragg is probably one of the most famous sea glass beaches in California, with lots of colorful glass pebbles mixed into the sand there. But the California coastline is rich with other options as well, like the beaches at Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County, Del Monte Beach near Monterrey, and Coyote Point Beach in San Mateo. Depending on when you go, each of these beaches has plenty of beautiful glass to offer, and sometimes the crowds are far sparser than you’ll see at Glass Beach.

On the East Coast, it may be easy to assume that Florida’s coastline or the seaside paradise of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina would be a jackpot of sea glass. The truth is that you’d be better off traveling up to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Pea Island near Cape Hatteras is one of the more popular stops, along with Coquinas Beach up at Nags Head.

The sandbarred shoreline of Cape Cod in Massachusetts sees a great deal of ocean activity that can produce a surprisingly large amount of sea glass for seekers. Venturing still more northerly to Maine, fortify yourself with a lobster roll and catch a ferry to the Cranberry Isles. Here, it’s often reported that the rarest red and deep blue hues of sea glass can be found by lucky, eagle-eyed treasure hunters.

Beach Glass

Because the frosted patina of sea glass is specifically created due to the currents and salt content of the ocean, you won’t find it on the freshwater beaches of the American Midwest. Instead, you’ll find what’s known as beach glass. A bit less frosty than sea glass, beach glass is plentiful along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

In Wisconsin, the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center near Milwaukee is a lovely destination for birdwatching, hiking, and beach glass hunting. For a really interesting time, head up to Petoskey in Northern Michigan. Not only can you find beach glass at Bayfront Park, you may also stumble across Petoskey stones, unique fossilized rocks with honeycomb-like patterns on their surfaces.

Morocco

When you think of Morocco, it may well be that your first thought is Marrakesh, with the Jemaa el-Fnaa market, an array of historical gardens, and the Bahia Palace.

Sea glass enthusiasts, however, know that the place to be is Essaouira, on Morocco’s eastern coast. If you step outside of the city walls to the windswept expanse of beach, you’re likely to find beautiful pastel gems of sea glass by the handful. But because Morocco is known for artisans that create stunning porcelain tiles, you can also find ocean-smoothed bits of discarded pottery painted with exquisite lace-like patterns.

Japan

Beach near Nago city in Okinawa, Japan

Morizono Park in Omura City near Nagasaki is an interesting sea glass destination. Unlike most sea glass beaches which were the result of industrial factories dumping their waste glass, the beach in Omura City was purpose-built as a glass beach. The city created this beach out of recycled glass in order to combat the growth of a species of algae with a particularly unpleasant aroma. The result is a sparkling carpet of jewel-like “sand” that’s stunning to behold.  You likely won’t find big pieces of sea glass to carry away, but it’s worth a trip just to see the twinkling expanse in the sunshine.

The place to go in Japan to actually pick up collectible sea glass is in Okinawa, near the city of Nago. Here, the aptly named Sea Glass Beach is renowned for the sheer quantity of gorgeous glass bits you can find on her shores. All sorts of shapes from chunky rhomboids to smooth marbles are scattered amongst the rocks here. It’s even vaguely, distantly possible that you’ll find a prized Japanese glass fishing float.

Australia

While Shark Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular sea glass beaches, is closed for renovations in 2023, hunters can move down the coastline to Malabar Beach. Tucked into a curve of the coast facing the Tasman Sea, this little beach often yields large quantities of emerald green and amber sea glass.

In South Australia, Robe’s Glass Beach is reported to be “more glass than sand.” Known properly as Factory Bay, this beach turns up lots of the typical bottle colors of glass due to its long history as a city dumping site. But every once in a while, a lucky seeker can find rare reds and purples here.

Tips and Tricks

When hunting for sea glass, the key is to look for gritty beaches with plenty of shells. You don’t want sunbathing beaches with long stretches of powdery sand when you’re looking to go seaglassing. You’ll find the most sea glass on rocky shorelines.

It is recommended that you bring a scoop of some kind along. Some beaches are home to creatures that could be venomous and some pieces of glass may still have sharp edges—there’s any number of reasons why you might not want to just stick your hands right into piles of rocks. Use a kitty litter scoop to sift through your findings and pick your treasures out from there.

Wearing sunglasses will obscure your view of the beach and may hide the telltale twinkles of glassy bits from your sight. Instead, wear a sunhat to protect your face and eyes while also allowing you to more easily spot glass.

The best times to visit a sea glass beach will be early in the morning, after the tide has gone out, or—once it is safe—after a big storm has stirred up the beach. You should see a fair number of new deposits after such activity.

Often, beaches and parks may have laws restricting whether or not you can remove sea glass from the premises. Some may allow you to take sea glass but leave fossils, some may allow you to take as much as you like (but please be polite about it and leave some for other seekers), some may not permit any removal at all. Check before you go, and keep an eye out for any posted signs.

Record-breaking heat waves like the ones we’re currently seeing across the United States and Europe are happening all too frequently. We may hope for a hot and sunny forecast when we’re headed to the beach, but when temperatures start to soar too high, the heat can quickly turn dangerous.

If you happen to be traveling during a heat wave, here’s what you need to know to stay safe.

Time Your Outdoor Activities Wisely

Yury and Tanya | Adobe Stock

During the recent heatwave in Italy, Italian authorities advised people to avoid being outside between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., when temperatures are the hottest. Wake up early and do your outdoor sightseeing before 11 a.m., and then try to visit museums and other indoor (and air-conditioned) attractions during the afternoon. As an unexpected bonus, you’ll likely encounter fewer crowds at popular spots in the early morning.

Take a cue from the Europeans and head back to your hotel for a siesta in the middle of the day when it’s too hot to be outside. After a quick nap, you’ll be refreshed and ready for outdoor activities once things cool off in the evenings.

Stay Tuned to the News

Extreme heat can cause dangerous conditions like wildfires or force the closure of some attractions. Sign up for alerts from the local government at your destination (and from the US Department of State) to stay informed.

Even transportation can be impacted—when temperatures get hot enough, tarmac and train tracks can melt or buckle, causing delays or cancellations.

Invest in Travel Insurance

Heat waves are not usually covered by standard travel insurance policies, so if you’re concerned your trip may be impacted by high temperatures, opt for “cancel for any reason” coverage, which lives up to the name and allows you to change your plans for any reason at all, including heat.

Dress Appropriately

Although it may be tempting to wear as little as possible during a heat wave, covering up with light layers can actually better protect you from the sun and keep your body temperature cooler. Choose light-colored, lightweight clothing with UPF-protective fabric when packing for travel to a heatwave-stricken destination. Don’t forget to pack a hat and sunscreen―It’s important to avoid getting sunburned during a heatwave, as a sunburn can impede your body’s natural ability to cool down and can even make you more dehydrated.

Book Air-Conditioned Accommodation

Air conditioning is less common in Europe and other destinations than in the United States, especially in private homes. If you’re booking a vacation rental, look for accommodation options that specifically list air-conditioning as an amenity—and then closely read the listing to see if the whole house (or just one room) has an air conditioning unit.

Pack Cooling Accessories

A few cooling accessories can go a long way to helping you feel comfortable. Some of our favorites include:

Hydrate

It’s easy to get dehydrated while traveling. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink—try to sip a steady amount of fluids throughout the day. Avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

If you’re sweating a lot, water alone may not be enough to hydrate you. Pack a few packets of electrolyte powders to help replenish important salts and minerals.

Consume Cold Food and Drink

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), consuming hot and heavy meals can actually increase your body temperature. Consider this your excuse to eat ice cream and stop for cold drinks frequently.

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, can be serious. Make sure you know the warning signs of these conditions and what to do if you or your travel partner start to showcase symptoms.

Look out for headaches, nausea, confusion, muscle pain, and heavy sweating. Immediately get to a cooler place, drink water, or get medical help if symptoms are severe.

Reapplying layers and layers of sunscreen will only get you so far. The best way to stay safe in the sun? Wear sun-protective clothing. Made out of special UV-blocking fabrics, these pieces will prevent sun damage much more effectively than regular clothing. (A regular white cotton t-shirt offers a shockingly low UPF rating of around 5).

Clothing uses a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) scale to measure the amount of sun protection provided—similar to how sunscreen is rated by SPF. The UPF scale goes up to 50+. A UPF rating of 25, for example, means that the fabric will only allow around 4 percent of UV radiation to penetrate through.

We’ve rounded up our favorite stylish sun protective clothing for travel that will keep you cool and safe no matter how hot it gets.

Coolibar Café Ruche Pants

Coolibar

Coolibar, a leader in sun protective clothing, was the first clothing company to receive The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. Coolibar continues to make stylish and practical clothing that blocks 90 percent of UVA/UVB rays, so you can stay outside and stay safe.

Coolibar’s trademarked ZnO fabric is a favorite from the brand. It offers UPF 50+ sun protection, but is incredibly soft, lightweight, and cool. Try it out in the versatile Cafe Ruche Pants—the stylish ruched design means you can wear these on the trail, on the plane, or even to the office—all while being protected and comfortable.

Toad & Co Sunkissed Maxi Dress

A maxi dress is great for sun protection, and Toad & Co’s Sunkissed Maxi Dress offers UPF 40+. The lightweight dress feels like air, so you can be covered up without overheating. You won’t be too covered though—there’s a cheeky on-trend cutout at the back of the dress.

Bra-friendly straps, hand pockets, and a quick-drying fabric mean that the Sunkissed Maxi Dress gets packed for all of our warm weather trips.

Orvis Jackson Quick Dry Pants

Can’t decide between a cropped leg or full length pant? Have both with Orvis’ Jackson Quick Dry Pants. The pants can be rolled up and secured with a built-in tab so you can wear them as a 32” inseam or a 23” inseam.

The pants offer UPF 50 protection, and were designed for fishing—so they’ll dry in a flash to keep you comfortable no matter what the day brings.

Kuhl Freeflex Dash

Made from a flexible fabric, Kuhl’s Freeflex Dash pants are stretchy without looking like leggings. In addition to freedom of movement, the Freeflex Dash offers UPF 50+ sun protection, a soft waistband, and pockets that are actually big enough to fit your cell phone.

Use the ankle cinch to change the look of the pants from straight leg to jogger style, or to keep your pants out of the way when biking.

Kaenon Venice Polarized Sunglasses

Protect your eyes (and your wallet) with a pair of sunglasses from luxury eyewear brand Kaenon’s new Essentials line. This budget-friendly line starts at just $100, but features the quality that Kaenon is known for. Essentials sunglasses are handcrafted in Japan, and use the same lightweight, polarized, and ultra-clear SR-91 lenses that the regular line does.

Our pick from the Essentials: the Venice Polarized Sunglasses, which are durable, stylish, and work for any activity.

Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Pant

If you’ve ever been caught off-guard on a sunny fall hike and ended up with a burn, you know the deal—you need sun protection even in chilly weather. Mountain Hardwear’s Chockstone Pants provide both warmth and UPF 50 protection, along with plenty of pockets (two hand pockets plus a secure zip pocket in back).

The pants are available in both a women’s specific and men’s specific fit, with options for short, regular, and long inseams—so you can get the perfect fit.

Houdini Wadi Pants

The Houdini Wadi Pants

Long pants are a necessity on some hikes. You need protection from not only the sun, but also insects and rough terrain. However, finding a pair that won’t make you sweat even harder on a hot hike is a challenge. Fortunately, Houdini’s Wadi Pants rise to the occasion.

Made from an ultra-lightweight Liquid Rock fabric, these pants will remain dry and breathable no matter how hot it gets. Use the adjustable leg endings to make the pants shorter as needed for water crossings or style.

The pants pack down into their own side pocket for easy packing. Check out the men’s-specific version of the Wadis here.

Orvis Long-Sleeved Tech Chambray Shirt

Orvis

Orvis’ Long-Sleeved Tech Chambray Shirt is made out of MarinoWul+, an eco-friendly fabric that’s composed of recycled plastic and reclaimed oyster shells. You’d never guess where it comes from, since the fabric feels softer than silk. In addition to UPF 30 sun protection, the shirt is equipped with Orvis’ trademarked OutSmart Fresh odor control, so you can wear this your entire trip without needing to wash it.

Can’t decide between a relaxing lakeside getaway or an active mountain vacation? Plan a trip to New Hampshire, home to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, where you can have both in one weekend.

With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 93 state park properties, and plenty of lakes and beaches to explore, the Granite State is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

Follow this guide to plan the perfect New Hampshire summer weekend trip.

Friday

Mount Washington Hotel exterior on left. Mount Washington Hotel room on the right.

Northern New Hampshire is an easy drive from Boston—you can save your vacation time, leave after work on Friday, and arrive in time for dinner.

Check into the Omni Mount Washington Resort, New Hampshire’s most iconic hotel. The sprawling, red-roofed property can be spotted from many viewpoints in the state. This historic resort was built in 1902 and has since undergone many renovations to make it the timelessly elegant property it is today. The most recent renovation expanded the hotel to add 69 modern rooms and suites in the Presidential Wing—book a room in this section to enjoy mountain views from your private outdoor space, oversized soaking tubs, and a brand-new feel.

The Omni’s main dining room was recently updated as well. Reserve a table by the window in this elegant space (there is a dress code) for a special dinner. The dining room’s picture windows offer stunning sunset views over the mountains and surrounding forest while you eat.

Saturday

Center Harbor Inn exterior on left, Center Harbor Inn room on right.

Start your day off right with a buffet breakfast in the Omni’s main dining room, or, for lighter fare, take advantage of the Omni’s complimentary coffee service and pair a cup with a pastry (don’t miss the incredible cinnamon rolls) from the hotel’s Morsels cafe.

New Hampshire is by far the best state in New England for hiking. Experience a classic New Hampshire 4,000-footer by tackling Mount Eisenhower. Part of the White Mountains’ famous Presidential Range, this moderately challenging trek will reward you with 360-degree views at the top. The 3.3-mile (one-way) Edmund’s Path trail is the most direct route to the summit.

By the time you’ve finished the hike, you’ll be ready for a hearty lunch. Refuel at Wicked Fresh Craft Burgers in North Conway. Get the milkshake (made with local milk) and the fries (topped with fresh herbs)—you’ve earned it.

Check into the Center Harbor Inn. Perched above a private sandy beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, this hotel puts you in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Opt for a water-view room with a private balcony for a truly luxurious stay.

Head down to the hotel’s outdoor hot tub where you can soak your tired muscles while overlooking the water.

Walk across the street to Poggio’s Craft Kitchen & Taphouse for dinner, where chef Kaylon Sweet serves up an ever-changing menu based on fresh, local ingredients. If the weather’s nice, sit outside in the restaurant’s beautiful new biergaten space.

Sunday

Castle in the Clouds

Stroll over to Gusto’s Italian Cafe for a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast. Grab a sandwich and coffee—and don’t forget to add in one of the homemade pastries involving Nutella—and bring your feast back for a picnic on Center Harbor Inn’s private beach.

After carboloading and caffeinating, rent a kayak from the hotel and paddle around Lake Winnipesaukee before checking out.

Take a short drive to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Built as a private estate in 1913, this elaborate property once spanned an incredible 6,300 acres. Now, the mansion and grounds occupy 135 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.

Tour the carefully-preserved 16-room Lucknow estate for a fascinating example of how the wealthy lived in the early 20th century before having lunch in the on-site restaurants (housed in the converted stables).

Cap off your trip with a walk through Castle in the Cloud’s many scenic walking trails—the short (0.8 mile) Brook Walk trail takes you past seven beautiful waterfalls.
