When you’re searching for a rental car to book for your trip, it’s always tempting to reserve the cheapest vehicle that pops up on search. After all, a Corolla is the same regardless of which agency you book it from, right? It seems that way… but waiting outside the airport for a shuttle that never arrives, dealing with a dirty or unreliable car, or spending hours in line just to reach the rental car counter can quickly ruin your vacation.

To help you avoid these rental car nightmares, J.D. Power conducts an annual North America Rental Car Satisfaction Study. This study surveys over 8,000 travelers who rented cars at airport locations for either business or leisure trips.

Participants ranked rental car agencies based on seven factors:

  1. Ease of rental
  2. Pick-up/drop-off experience
  3. Level of trust
  4. Vehicle
  5. Staff
  6. Value for price paid
  7. Digital tools

The Best Rental Car Companies

A famous name doesn’t guarantee a good rental car experience. “Trust fosters loyalty, enhances the company’s reputation, and differentiates it in a competitive market,” said Azari Jones, rental car practice lead at J.D. Power. “This leads to higher customer retention and positive word-of-mouth. Without this trust, even a well-known brand may struggle to maintain long-term relationships with customers.”

According to the survey, these are the best rental car companies in North America.

  1. National
  2. Enterprise
  3. Sixt
  4. Advantage Rent A Car
  5. Alamo
  6. Hertz
  7. ACE Rent A Car

The Worst Rental Car Companies

If you want to avoid a bad experience, you shouldn’t book with the following rental car companies, which were ranked lowest in the customer satisfaction survey.

  1. Dollar
  2. Budget
  3. Thrifty
  4. Fox Rent A Car
  5. Avis
  6. Payless

Shortening days, comfy sweaters, steaming mugs of warm apple cider: Some things are so quintessentially fall that, despite the promise of snowy days to come, we just can’t wait to partake. Autumn is the ideal time for weekend trips both urban and rustic. Check out our 10 favorite fall destinations and then plan your own cozy escape.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire

The octet of villages in New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Valley would scream “fall in New England” … if screaming weren’t completely out of character for the area’s tranquil spirit. While the region is known for snow sports and world-class skiing later in the season, it’s also brimming with autumnal activities. From leaf peeping along the Appalachian Trail to pick-your-own pumpkin patches and apple orchards, there’s something for everyone along the area’s winding byways. In North Conway, take a ride in historical Pullman cars on the Conway Scenic Railroad before stopping at one of the many nearby outlets … you know, for your new fall wardrobe.

Where to Stay: Little inns abound in this region, but The Wentworth (with its AAA Four-Diamond dining room) is a particularly polished but cozy option in Jackson Village that offers several packages for fall getaways, with low off-season rates.

Nashville, Tennessee

Sunset in Nashville, Tennessee

Stumbling upon a musical performance in Nashville is as inevitable as the changing of the seasons. Artists and travelers alike flock to Music City each fall for a slate of festivals, headliner shows, and the opening of the theater and opera seasons. Take your pick of the area’s many pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and farmers’ markets for a seasonal Tennessee bounty, or embark on the Tennessee Central Railway Museum’s 4.5-hour Oktoberfest Excursion for live music, beer, and food throughout the highlands of Tennessee. If you want to sneak in some leaf peeping, peak colors occur around the third and fourth weeks of October.

Where to Stay: Most major hotel chains have outposts in Nashville; check out seasonal deals from Hilton and Loews. Also be sure to dig through the offerings from VisitMusicCity.com, where seasonal hotel packages can be music to your ears.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe continually ranks among Travel + Leisure‘s top places to catch some peace and quiet, and natives contend that September is the best time to visit this southwestern city. That’s when the crowds have thinned but the weather remains warm and welcoming. Catch a little R & R yourself this fall, Santa Fe-style. Witness the aspen leaves turning a brilliant gold as you stop at roadside stands brimming with late-harvest corn and roasted green chiles. (Try the region’s signature veggie in all its forms at the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta or October’s interactive Harvest Festival.) And when too much activity makes you weary and worn, check into one of the area’s many renowned spas for a relaxing and renewing treatment.

Where to StayThe Sage Hotel has a list of packages for travelers coming to the city, plus complimentary continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi access. The Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau lists more discounts on accommodations, activities, excursions, and dining on their website.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

This historical island is a classic Midwestern destination: a Victorian-era getaway on Lake Huron, replete with gingerbread houses and horse-drawn carriages (and largely without the pesky annoyance of motor vehicles). Mackinac Island has its last hurrah in October, when the days get chilly but the island reveals its more peaceful side: quiet but alive with fall color, festivals, and events. Experience the thrill of Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park, where a zip-line and canopy walk wind through cedars high above the ground. Bike across the famous Mackinac Bridge or picnic on the shores of the Straits of Mackinac, where the Michigan and Huron lakes merge. Or simply stay in and enjoy a slate of activities, from the Mackinac Island Halloween Weekend (October 25-27) to a cozy murder-mystery weekend at the iconic Grand Hotel.

Where to Stay: Fall in Mackinac Island means hotel discounts, generally of around 15 percent or more. The Grand Hotel currently features a Welcome Fall Weekends Package which includes daily breakfast and dinner, complimentary entry to the Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, and any additional days added beyond the weekend can be booked for a 50% discount. Find more vacation packages on Mackinac Island’s tourism site, including free admission to local sights and activities, AARP specials and deals for AAA Travel members, and special rates on stays at the island’s many historical inns.

Boston, Massachusetts

Fall foliage in Boston, Massachusetts

Locals maintain that fall is the best time to visit this classic and collegiate New England getaway: Both Boston and its sister city Cambridge are alive with new students, and the heat has dissipated downtown. Visit the scenic Boston Common and the Public Garden, where trees explode in fiery reds, oranges, and yellows; stroll Cambridge’s grassy, tree-lined Harvard Yard; or be gently pushed along the Freedom Trail by autumn breezes while on a tour (complete with a guide in authentic colonial garb). Brisk October brings the iconic two-day Head of the Charles Regatta, when some 11,000 athletes take to the Charles River and more than 400,000 spectators take to its banks. Baseball fans can catch a post-season Red Sox game at historic Fenway Park.

Where to Stay: Accommodations can be pricey in this urban destination, especially during the Head of the Charles and other seasonal events. Check online travel agencies (OTAs) for up-to-date rates and last-minute savings. For a luxe fall-themed stay, check into boutique XV Beacon to take advantage of their Fall Into Fifteen package now through December 21st, where a stay of 2-nights or more earns you a 15% discount on their best available rate per night.

Hudson River Valley, New York

New York’s Hudson River Valley is a picturesque escape 90 minutes from Manhattan, replete with rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, and sleepy Victorian villages occupied by grand manses. The oldest wine-making and grape-growing region in the country is saturated with color every autumn, and its various wine tours welcome those looking for a taste. Sip a few varietals before heading to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park to sample dishes at one of the five student-run restaurants on-site; beautiful Valley views complement the meal. Finish with a walk (or bike ride) 212 feet above the Hudson River on the Walkway Over the Hudson state park. Opened in 2009, this pedestrian bridge offers postcard-worthy foliage, plus picnic benches perfect for a lunch of apples and cheese sourced from local farms.

Where to StayMohonk Mountain House in New Paltz has numerous fall-centric specials, including up to 20% off 2-night stays now through the end of October.

Eastern Shore, Maryland

A peninsula buttressed by the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore has long been a summer favorite for East Coasters who hit the outdoors for world-class boating and bird-watching. But autumn is also a worthy time to visit this seaside region’s small towns for their mild weather and fall festivals. In Cambridge, the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (which stretches over 25,000 acres) acts as a sanctuary for endangered waterfowl; the area is best explored from mid-October through mid-March. Along the Choptank River, Cambridge itself is a resurgent small town with a burgeoning artsy vibe; check out its galleries and events here. (Spoiler: Oysters and hot sauce may be involved.) Experience quaint St. Michaels during the Fall Into St. Michaels festival before exploring its quirky gift and antique shops. For some bigger-town excitement, Ocean City beckons with sandy beaches and, during the fall season, a boardwalk largely free of crowds.

Where to Stay: The Eastern Shore has plenty of accommodation options, but bed-and-breakfasts often provide the best value, especially in the off-season. If a larger hotel is more your speed, the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay offers discounts up to 10% for members. Explore the flood of fall freebies and accommodations deals on the Ocean City tourism website as well.

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia

A proper mix of eclectic downtowns, mountain resorts, and natural wonders (think limestone caverns) make Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley a year-round destination. But fall brings out the region’s true colors. Take a spin through the Blue Ridge Parkway on the eastern edge of the valley or motor the 105-mile Skyline Drive, which features 75 scenic outlooks for admiring nature cloaked in its scarlet, maroon, and golden finest. Visit the Marker-Miller Orchards for PYO apples, or browse the market for other fall goodies, from pluots to pears to prunes. Downtown Lexington is brimming with antique shops, galleries, and food purveyors where you can grab Amish goods and local confections.

Where to Stay: In Lexington, the Brierley Hill Bed and Breakfast is a TripAdvisor-approved stunner nestled in the region’s rolling meadows. For those looking to rough it (but not really), the authentic timber-framed cabins at Shadow Mountain Escape are a charming and eco-friendly home base on the border of Shenandoah National Park.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe may be another one of New England’s winter hot spots—er, cold spots—but fall is chock-full of events that draw tourists to this almost-250-year-old mountain village. The Stowe Foliage Arts Festival (October 11–13) brings together 150 craftspeople, artists, and specialty-food makers—and the usual throngs of fall tourists—under a canopy of colorful leaves. Visit Autumn in Stowe on GoStowe.com for itineraries, kids’ activities, and up-to-the-minute news on the leaf situation.

Where to Stay: The Sun & Ski Inn and Suites features low rates in its guest rooms, suites, and full-sized condos plus a Book Early for Winter Sale for 15% off stays between November and March. Check GoStowe.com for a current list of deals.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

This is a nature lover’s state of grace. The mighty Columbia River carves a twisting path through the Cascade Mountains, leading to waterfalls, rocky beaches, and charming cabins along its wide canyon. Take in the stunning 620-foot Multnomah Falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway, or follow the paved ribbons of hiking trails. Explore these geological wonders your way: Trek, bike, windsurf, whitewater raft, or merely sit for a while and soak in the crisp fall air. The weather is brisk, and while the water may be frigid for all but the most adventurous, the area’s countless craft breweries and pubs beg visitors to pop in for a pint and a warm-up with views of the trees’ explosive wardrobe change.

Where to Stay: Statewide, camp in a number of recreation sites and state parks for nominal rates, or rent a cabin via VRBO. Redefine “roughing it” at Carson Ridge Luxury Cabins; look into seasonal, romantic, and adventure-themed specials on the property’s website.

You’ve just settled down for a good night’s sleep in a cozy old hotel when a child’s laughter penetrates the stillness. Could it be that you are now lying awake in a hotel where guests may have checked out, but never really left? There’s no better time to celebrate the world’s most haunted hotels than Halloween. If you’re looking for things that go bump in the night at prices that won’t make you scream, then these hotels, inns, B&Bs, and castles may be right up your dark alley.

Dragsholm Castle

Built in 1200, the Dragsholm Castle is not only one of the oldest castles in Denmark, it is also the home to many of the longest-staying guests. Though there isn’t an exact number of spirited figures who still roam the grounds—some believe the number to be in the hundreds—there are three who make a particular impression: the Grey Lady, the White Lady, and the Earl of Bothwell.

Visitors may encounter the Grey Lady in their rooms at night, because even in her death, this grateful spirit still keeps a close eye on the castle grounds to make sure things are in order. When the Grey Lady was alive, she was believed to be a worker who suffered from a horrible toothache, which was cured by someone in the castle. She has been repaying the kind deed ever since.

The White Lady’s tale is by far more tragic, and begins with the discovery, during a renovation in the early 20th century, of a young girl’s skeleton in a white dress hidden within a wall. Legend has it that these bones once belonged to the daughter of the castle’s former owner. She fell madly in love with a commonplace worker, and when her father learned of the affair he had her locked within a room in the castle, never to see the light of day again. Her young spirit has been seen roaming the halls at night, perchance searching for her lost love.

The Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, a consort to Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned for murder in the Dragsholm Castle cellars, where he eventually went mad and died in 1578. Visitors can see the same pillar where the Earl was once chained, and if they’re lucky, they may even catch a glimpse of the Earl riding into the courtyard with a horse and carriage. Some visitors have even claimed to hear the sound of horses when there’s nothing there.

Today, Dragsholm Castle is a hotel, restaurant, and a museum. Rooms start around $226 USD per night, and include breakfast. The hotel also offers guided tours exploring the castle’s 800-year history.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast

The Official Lizzie Borden House

You may have heard of Lizzie Borden from the playground rhyme, “Lizzie Borden took an axe/ And gave her mother 40 whacks/ When she saw what she had done/ She gave her father 41.” However, the mystery surrounding the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden is much more complicated than a simple child’s game.

For instance, Lizzie was never found guilty for the slaying of her father and stepmother, and to this day, the case remains unsolved. Come decide for yourself what actually happened on the morning of August 4, 1892, by staying in the house in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it all took place. Choose from six rooms, including the one where Abby Borden’s body was discovered. Retrace the gruesome events by starting your morning with a breakfast reminiscent of the ones the Bordens ate as their last meal.

You may even encounter the restless spirit of Lizzie herself. Some who have stayed here have heard giggling. Others claim to feel a chill in certain spots of the house. And, those who snap photos seem to always catch an orb or possibly the faint outline of a face.

Rooms are typically in the $250 to $315 range per night, with prices known to spike during high season. However, if you’d like to learn more about the infamous murders without spending the night, you can tour the property during daylight hours for $30.

Fairmont Banff Springs

The Fairmont Banff Springs, “Canada’s Castle in the Rockies,” has seen many prestigious guests since it first opened its doors more than 120 years ago. In fact, some liked the place so well that they never left.

This is the case with Sam the Bellman, who worked at the hotel for many years. Before his death, Sam joked that he would return to the hotel he held so dearly in the afterlife. Many guests will attest that Sam kept his word.

The first sighting was by two elderly ladies who couldn’t get the key to work in their room door. Feeling uneasy because of the late hour and darkened corridor, they called the front desk for assistance and were told to wait for the bellman. However, when the bellman arrived, the ladies were already safely in their room. When asked how they managed that, they stated that the gray-haired bellman had appeared moments after they called and opened the door for them. The young bellman was bewildered since no one matching that description worked at the hotel. Since that time, the elderly bellhop with a Scottish brogue has been assisting guests and keeping a watchful eye on his hotel.

Visitors may also encounter the spirit of a young bride. Close to the time of the hotel’s grand opening in the 1930s, a groom waited in the library at the top of a candlelit, winding, limestone staircase for his true love to ascend. As she made her way up the stairs, her hem of her dress brushed against one of the candle’s flames and caused her to jump back, which sent her tumbling to her death. Guests claim to occasionally see her, still dressed in her white lace gown, dancing her wedding waltz alone, without her love.

Rooms start at roughly $400 per night, with many in the $500-$600 range, but there are plenty of package deals available to keep your heart from racing.

The Stanley Hotel

Built in the early 1900s, the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, has hosted many guests, including the master of horror, Stephen King. While staying in room 217, King was inspired to write The Shining, about a grand hotel in the Rocky Mountains that possesses its guests. Though most of King’s inspiration came from his own twisted imagination, the Stanley is home to a few spirits.

The most notable ghost is the original owner, F.O. Stanley, who has been spotted in the lobby and the billiard room. His wife, Flora, who once entertained guests with her skillful piano playing in the ballroom, still plays to this day. Hotel staff have heard music coming from that room, and have even seen the piano keys moving—though the music stops abruptly once they enter.

The greatest activity, however, is said to take place on the fourth floor, especially in room 418. When the room is empty, strange noises emanate from behind the doors. Guests often report hearing children’s laughter in the hallway at night. The staff has even seen an imprint on the bed, although no one had been sleeping there.

Rooms start at around $250 per night. If you really want to get your supernatural feet wet, book the spirited Night Tour during your stay. For just $30 per person, explore the haunted history of this grand hotel under the cover of darkness.

Gosforth Hall Inn

The Copley Suite at Gosforth Hall Inn, a rustic looking room with wooden beams, a large bed, and a couch
Gosforth Hall Inn

Built in 1658 by Robert Copley, who was suspected of being a Roman Catholic at a time when that meant death, the Gosforth Hall Inn has long been a sanctuary for lost souls. The inn may not publicly advertise its uninvited guests, but the owners are happy to share their experiences if asked.

And there’s plenty to talk about. Some guests have seen curtains billow in a room with no wind, felt the playful presence of a child, and even met apparitions in their rooms at night.

Room 11 is not only the biggest room at the inn, but it’s also the most popular for otherworldly sightings. The room has what people believe to be a priest’s hole (a hiding place for priests during the Roman Catholic persecution). At night, guests have woken to see a man dressed as a monk or friar, sitting next to the hole. Another guest once encountered a little old lady wearing an off-white dress and hair pulled back into a bun floating above the floor by the window, who vanished the moment the guest spoke.

There’s also the tale that Copley built the upper stories from the timbers of ship wrecks found along the Irish coast. The story goes that the timbers groan in anguish for the men whose final moments were spent clinging to their sturdy wood before the sea claimed their lives. Visitors who listen carefully just might hear a few final pleas for help.

Basic rooms start at £110 (about $122 U.S.; check XE.com for current exchange rates) per night, and include breakfast.

The Marshall House

The Marshall House as seen from the street in Savanah, Georgia
The Marshall House

Savannah has a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S., so it’s only fitting its first hotel would be a premier gathering place for restless souls. Built in 1851, the Marshall House has accommodated yellow fever victims, and was once used as a Union clinic for wounded soldiers during the Civil War.

In the 1960s, the amputated bones of patients were unearthed while renovating the hotel, and hotel guests have been reporting stories of creepy encounters ever since. For instance, some guests wake to the feeling of someone holding their wrist, much in the same way nurses would take a pulse. Others have felt the presence of a little girl rumored to be searching for her father who died in one of the rooms.

Rooms start around $230 for weekday stays during high season. If you’d rather hear the stories than experience them first-hand, you can always schedule a haunted walking tour for $29. You’ll stop at many of Savannah’s eerie establishments, including the Marshall House.

Villa di Corliano

Exterior of the Villa di Corliano as seen through a gate in a large stone wall
Villa di Corliano | Adobe Stock

Recognized as one of the most prestigious Renaissance villas in Tuscany, Villa di Corliano‘s luxury and grandeur is more than enough reason to never leave—even after the body has given up the ghost. Built in the 15th century, the building’s exterior is decorated in graffiti typical of the Florentine Mannerist Art and dating back to the 1500s.

The villa has been home to and welcomed many prestigious guests throughout its time. In fact, it is one such person that is thought to remain on the grounds to this day.

By the light of a full moon, guests have encountered a noblewoman, known as the “White Ghost,” lurking in their rooms. Some local peasants even claimed once to see her in the drive of the park leading a six-horse coach, where she stopped at the Ragnaia, or “Cobweb Corner,” to stare longingly at the villa which they believed was once her home. Known also as a good-natured spirit, she is also responsible for moving tapestries and rearranging ornaments, and a slamming door or mysteriously opened window is considered her handiwork. Occasionally the underground passageways beneath the wine cellar ring with giggling or the sound of footsteps. There is also the account of one night when the hall was filled with the thunderous sound of the crystal chandelier crashing to the floor, but when the chandelier was found, it was right where it should be without one crystal out of place.

So, who is the “White Ghost?” Speculative fingers point to the direction of Maria Teresa Scolastica Ottavia della Seta Gaetani Bocca who was married at the villa in 1755, but there is very little to support that claim. For now, her identity remains as mysterious as her presence in the villa.

Rooms start at €85-$140 (about $95-$156 U.S.; check XE.com for current exchange rates) per night, and include breakfast.

The Admiral Fell Inn

Room at the The Admiral Fell Inn
The Admiral Fell Inn

With a history dating back to the 1700s, the Admiral Fell Inn once served as a safe haven for sailors while their ships called at Baltimore. The historic hotel still maintains the same home-away-from-home appeal for all travelers today, whether they have a pulse or not.

One of the more notable supernatural occurrences happened during Hurricane Isabel in 2003, when the hotel was evacuated except for a few managers. During the night, merriment and dancing could be heard above the lobby, but the only breathing people in the hotel were on the ground floor. The next night, the noises became so loud that the floor actually vibrated.

Rooms start in the $150-$200 range, but if you dare not spend the night, you can embark on a Fells Point Ghost Tour to see what other apparitions are hiding in this seaside town.

Renewing a US passport is an archaic process. You have to obtain a printed photo, write a check or money order, and then package up all your forms and old passport and go to the post office to mail it—and then cross your fingers that your important and sensitive documents don’t get stolen or lost in the post.

After all that, you then have to wait for the State Department to receive your application (which can take up to two weeks depending on where you mail your package from) before the estimated 8-11 week wait time to process and approve your new passport begins.

Fortunately, the US government has embraced technology and as of this week will allow travelers to renew their passports online. A spokesperson for the State Department told SmarterTravel, “Our new online system will save Americans money, time, and effort, making it much more convenient to renew their passports.”

However, unlike with mailed applications, you can pay any fees with a credit card (and get those credit card miles for travel). You’ll also save money on postage (which can be significant if you want tracking to ensure your package arrived safely).

Where Can I Get Digital Copies of My Passport Photo?

To renew online, applicants must upload their passport photo as a digital file. Photos must be unedited. Scanned photos and selfies will not be accepted. Your digital photo must be:

While many people prefer the guarantee that their store-bought photo will meet all government requirements, budget-conscious travelers can also opt to take their own passport photo at home. Check out our how-to guide for the most up-to-date sizing and requirements.

How Do I Submit an Online Passport Application?

Travelers can apply to renew their passport through their MyTravelGov account. To create an account, simply sign up with your personal email, create a password, and choose from the required two-factor authentication options. From there, click on “Renew Your Passport” and complete the application within thirty days of beginning.

Applicants do not need to mail in their old passport but be warned—old passports will be immediately deactivated upon submission. Furthermore, other than skipping the time applications would have spent in the mail before reaching the Processing Center, processing times for online renewal are the same as mail-in applications. Online submission takes the hassle out of applying for a renewal but don’t count on it to shorten your wait time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Passport Renewal

When should I renew my passport?

Many countries require passports to be valid for at least six months after a traveler’s date of departure from the destination and some also require at least one blank page on the passport for the entry stamp. Even if your passport will be valid for the duration of your trip, it may need to be renewed to meet these requirements. Check the State Department website for information on your destination.

Can I renew my passport card online?

Yes, you can renew a passport book, card, or both online. However, applicants can only renew documents they already have in their possession—they cannot apply for a new document. For example, travelers who only have a passport card but would like to apply for a passport book cannot do so online.

Does my old passport need to be expired to renew my passport?

You can renew your passport before your old passport expires, however your old passport will be immediately deactivated upon submission of the application.

Do I need to renew my passport if I move?

You do not need to renew or update your passport with a change of address if you move.

How long is my passport valid for?

Passports issued to minors under 16 years of age are only valid for 5 years, while passports issued to those over 16 years of age are valid for 10 years.

Do I need a passport if I have a REAL ID?

Travelers must have a passport to travel internationally. You cannot travel internationally with just the REAL ID. To learn more about the REAL ID and what it can and cannot do, check out our article Everything Travelers Need to Know About the REAL ID Act.

As air travel approaches pre-pandemic levels and airports become more crowded, security lines are getting longer. But there is a guaranteed way to make sure you get to the front of the line…every time you fly. That means less stress figuring out how far in advance to get to the airport, and less time actually waiting in line.

In this article, I cover the benefits of CLEAR and explain how it is different from TSA PreCheck. I’ll also teach you how to get free or discounted CLEAR membership so you can save both time and money!

Note that this article is not sponsored by CLEAR. I’ve been using CLEAR for many years and just want to share how useful it can be to frequent travelers.

What’s the Difference Between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

Cellphone showing CLEAR app (left) and example of a CLEAR booth (right)
CLEAR

Both CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are expedited security programs that travelers can join for a fee. However, CLEAR will get you to the front of the line more quickly.

At most major U.S. airports, there are two main security lanes: one for TSA PreCheck (usually shorter) and one for regular processing (usually longer.) TSA PreCheck is a popular program that many travelers are already a member of. It costs between $77.95 – $85 (depending on which enrollment partner you sign up through) for five years, which is a great value. After a background check and quick interview, most people get approval. However, so many travelers are now enrolled in the program that the TSA PreCheck line can often get long.

CLEAR goes a step further. It is a third lane—complete with dedicated customer service agents and sometimes an actual red carpet—that allows you to skip ahead.

CLEAR uses biometrics, i.e., facial recognition and fingerprints, to identify you at a kiosk. Then you’ll scan your boarding pass, and a CLEAR representative will escort you to the front of the line. From there, you’ll go one of two ways…

If you have TSA Pre-Check in addition to CLEAR, then you’ll go to the front of the Pre-Check line. However, if you do not have PreCheck, then you will go to the front of the regular lane instead and have to do the usual screening, including taking off your shoes and removing any devices from your bags.

Why Should I Get CLEAR?

Basically, you don’t have to worry about how long the security line is going to be. You can leave home (or your accommodation) knowing that you just need to allow enough time to check-in, drop bags (if needed), and go straight to the front of the security line.

Given CLEAR is significantly more expensive than TSA PreCheck, this program is best suited to frequent travelers.

Where Can I Find a CLEAR Airport?

There are 58 airports in the U.S. where you can use CLEAR, including 19 of the top 20 (Charlotte is the only one missing.) It covers most of the major airport hubs, as well as secondary airports like Baltimore, New Orleans, and Sacramento.

It’s worth checking the CLEAR locations page to see if CLEAR operates at your home airport and/or destinations that you often fly to. You’ll also want to check the operating hours as well as in which terminal/s a CLEAR lane is available.

For example, at my home airport of Austin, the CLEAR lane closes at 6:30 p.m. That means if I were to fly out on a 9 p.m. flight, I’d want to know that I would not be able to access CLEAR before my flight.

CLEAR has also expanded to operate at sporting and entertainment venues like New York’s Madison Square Garden and Dallas’ Globe Life Field. Finally, finding a CLEAR lane at one-off events and festivals like Chicago’s Pride In The Park is increasingly becoming common.

How Much Does CLEAR Cost?

The base membership fee for CLEAR is $199/year. However, no one should pay full price (see next section.) If you compare the two expedited security programs, CLEAR will cost you a total of $895 over five years compared to TSA PreCheck’s $85 (less than 10% of the cost of CLEAR.)

Up to three family members can be added for $119/year each. However, children 17 years old and younger who are traveling with you do not need a membership.

Is There A CLEAR Promo Code?

Not right now, but if you search Google, you will find that CLEAR sometimes partners with companies and runs special promo codes. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to snag a free or discounted CLEAR membership.

How Can I Get a Free or Discounted CLEAR Membership?

Unfortunately, CLEAR recently discontinued its discounted student CLEAR membership offer. However, there are still plenty of other ways to save.

Through a Frequent Flyer Program

The most common way to save money on a CLEAR membership is to apply using your Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus frequent flyer number. (Both of these programs are free to join if you’re not already a member.) Base members of these two programs get a discounted rate of $189, saving you $10.

If you have Silver, Gold or Platinum status with either program, the price drops to $159. Top-tier Delta Diamond Medallion and United Premier 1K members get a free CLEAR membership.

Through a Credit Card

American Express Platinum, Business Platinum Card, and Express Green Card members get up to $199 in statement credits each calendar year when using their card to pay for a CLEAR membership.

Through a CLEAR Trial Membership

CLEAR offers a free two-month trial. If you do not want to continue to use the service, just make sure you cancel before the trial ends.

How Do I Apply For CLEAR?

  1. Enroll for a free two-month trial; or click through the Delta or United page for discounted membership
  2. Take your ID to a CLEAR kiosk next time you fly (no appointment needed)
  3. An agent will help you take your biometric information

Note that if your application is denied by CLEAR for any reason, you are entitled to a refund of your membership fee.

Bottom Line

If you are a frequent traveler and value your time, then CLEAR may be worth enrolling in. You can try out the service before you commit by signing up for a free two-month trial. You can also save money on the membership fee by either applying through Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus, or holding a specific credit card.

On the other hand, if you are not a frequent traveler, getting TSA PreCheck may instead offer you better value. You’ll still save time compared to the regular line but do be aware that the PreCheck line can still be long, especially during peak travel periods.

The joy of road trips can quickly fade when it’s time to refuel, and you have to pay more than you expected to fill up your tank. To help ease the pain at the pump, we’ve gathered expert tips to save you money on fuel costs, whether you’re at home or on vacation.

These small changes to your driving habits, combined with free reward programs, can add up to big savings on gas.

Plan Ahead

Getting lost, backtracking when making multiple stops, and not planning your refueling spot ahead of time—these are all small mistakes that can add up to a big gas bill. Nicole Petersen, a spokesperson for GasBuddy, advises, “Long or unfamiliar trips are the most common time that people waste money on gas, stopping at stations simply for convenience. Things like waiting until the next city over or crossing state lines can save you a lot of money at the pump.”

At home, Ellen Edmonds, Public Relations Manager for the American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends combining errands and getting everything done in one spot or shopping plaza if possible, in order to save on mileage.

Even if you think you know the way around, mapping out our trip ahead of time (especially if you’re making multiple stops) can help you maximize your fuel economy.

Increase Your Fuel Efficiency

Going faster might save you time on the road, but it will cost you at the pump. “Fuel economy peaks at around 50 mph on most cars, then drops off as speeds increase, says Edmonds.

Simply slowing down your highway speeds by 5 to 10 mph can help to increase your vehicle’s fuel economy by as much as 14 percent, according to AAA.

Pay extra attention to your driving behavior as well. Petersen recommends avoiding “aggressive driving habits like speeding, hard braking and fast acceleration, as they waste gas and can decrease efficiency by up to 40 percent.”

Avoid Idling

At a standstill in traffic? Turn off your engine if it’s safe to do so (and if you’ll be stopped for longer than a minute.) “A car engine consumes one quarter to one-half gallon of fuel per hour when idling, but a warm engine only takes around 10 seconds worth of fuel to restart,” says Edmonds.

Skip Stops and Slowdowns

Some stops are unavoidable, but try to skip any unnecessary stops or slowdowns on the highway. According to AAA, this means:

  • Using “fast pass” or “express toll lanes
  • Avoiding rush hour when possible
  • Monitoring traffic on your route ahead of time and during the trip, and rerouting to a more efficient way as needed

Pass on Premium Gas

Check what type of gas is recommended for our vehicle. If your car only requires regular fuel, splurging for premium will not improve fuel economy and will be a waste of money, warns AAA.

Shop Around for Gas

Plan ahead with your gas stops so you’re not forced to buy extra expensive fuel at the nearest gas station because you’re running on empty. Petersen says GasBuddy typically sees “14-30 cent ranges in gas prices even in small areas.”

There are a few ways you can find out gas prices without driving past stations and checking the signs.

  • Search “gas stations” on Google Maps, which displays prices for some stations
  • Use the AAA Mobile App, which shows fuel stops nearby along with gas prices
  • Download the GasBuddy app, which displays gas prices on a map

Take Advantage of Loyalty Programs & Gas Cards

Now might be the time to take advantage of those loyalty programs you’ve been avoiding the signs for every time you fill up. These are free programs that give members rewards and discounts on fuel. Some examples include:

  • Fuel Rewards, an easy-to-use discount card valid at Shell stations
  • GasBuddy, a payment card that can save up to 25 cents per gallon at a number of different gas stations
  • BPme Rewards, which gives app users up to 5 cents off every gallon at BP stations
  • Exxon Mobile Rewards, simply sign up and then use the app, credit card or just your phone number at the pump to save 3 cents per gallon

Rent a Hybrid Car

Next time you book a rental car for your travels, choose a hybrid car. These vehicles are usually smaller and cheaper to rent. They also require significantly less gasoline than a regular vehicle, which can result in huge savings on a road trip.

Almost all major rental car companies offer hybrid vehicles, however, most companies specify that the vehicle type “isn’t guaranteed” and you might wind up with a non-hybrid when you arrive.

If you want to guarantee a hybrid rental, try Turo, a car sharing site where you can pick the specific vehicle you want to rent.

Traveling internationally is an adventure best planned ahead of time, and not just when it comes to booking flights and packing. Sure, showing up at your gate sans passport or forgetting melatonin for your red-eye flight can put a damper on your long-awaited escape, but most of your preparation should be dedicated to ensuring health, safety, and financial necessities are covered. To save you some prep time, we’ve compiled this international travel checklist for your next long-distance journey.

Focus on Safety First

One of the easiest and most important items on an overseas travel checklist is also arguably the most ignored. Travel insurance and State Department alerts can be incredibly important in emergencies abroad, but many tourists bet they won’t become part of the small percentage of travelers who require evacuation assistance or protection from hotel or flight cancellations.

Subscribing to the State Department’s STEP alerts for your destination can help you stay up to date on upcoming and current travel restrictions, strikes, and areas of political unrest. Any alerts you receive will let you know whether or not to plan for some unexpected obstacles in advance.

Travel insurance can cost as little as a few dollars per travel day and cover anything from lost luggage to emergency medical attention, potentially saving you hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars.

Get Your Travel Documents and Credit Cards in Order

Make sure your passport and any necessary travel visas are up to date. Some countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months after your scheduled return, so make sure you won’t be turned away or delayed at customs because of an old passport. Not sure if you need a visa? Check the State Department’s travel page for your destination.

Keep physical and digital copies of your passport and all your paperwork in case anything is lost. Share copies of your passport, itinerary, and contact numbers with family and friends whom you can contact in case of an emergency.

Notify your bank and credit card companies about your travel dates so they don’t deny your purchases, and ask about international ATM fees so you can find out which ones won’t charge you. It’s always a good idea to bring multiple cards in case one stops working.

Don’t underestimate how helpful a cell phone photo of your passport can be. Whether you have to go to the consulate and report it lost, or are just filling out a customs card and need your passport number, it will likely come in handy. Email the image to yourself to have an extra digital copy in case your phone runs out of batteries or goes missing. You may also want to bring a spare copy of your passport photo on your trip; having it handy will speed the processing of a new document.

Get Vaccinated

It’s best to get the necessary vaccinations out of the way as soon as possible since it can take a few weeks to build full immunity. Some also require multiple doses, which may need to be administered over days, weeks, or even months. Talk to your doctor about getting the CDC-recommended shots, as the protocol for vaccines varies by country. For example, dozens of countries require proof of a yellow fever vaccination if you’ve been to at-risk areas. A travel clinic can help you sort out which vaccinations and medications you might need.

Keep your vaccination certificate in your carry-on in case customs requires you to present it when entering the country.

Study Up on Your Destination

Whether you’re a travel app connoisseur or more of a paperback guidebook person, having some source of knowledge about your destination is invaluable. Read about the region you’re traveling to in advance to gain insight into important information such as currency exchange rates, useful phrases, tipping norms, appropriate clothing, and cultural/legal customs. It’s best to be prepared so you don’t land yourself in a compromising situation.

Make Sure Your Home Is Cared For

There’s nothing worse than realizing once you’re six time zones away that you forgot to stop your mail delivery or ask someone to water your expertly cultivated house plants. Make sure your daily tasks are covered before you leave, or appoint a trusty friend to do them for you.

You can find a house or pet sitter to do your chores if you’re willing to list your home on TrustedHouseSitters.com. Plus, you could find lodging through the site for your trip abroad if you can do the same for someone else.

Stay Connected

Want to stay in touch while traveling abroad? If you haven’t taken your phone overseas before, call your mobile provider to ask about international phone plans that might be available. If your carrier’s plans are expensive, an international SIM card can be a good alternative.

Download the Necessities

Sometimes, the most important thing you’ll pack is in your smartphone rather than your suitcase. Offline maps are your best friend when traveling with limited data or battery. You can find Wi-Fi in many places, but downloading offline maps through Google Maps will allow you to follow your GPS without using up data.

Downloading in-flight entertainment could also save you if your TV malfunctions on a long-haul flight. Streaming won’t be available without consistent in-flight Wi-Fi (which you shouldn’t ever depend on) but you can pre-download movies and TV shows through most platforms.

Don’t forget a portable backup charger. Watching hours of your favorite TV show is sure to drain your battery life, and there’s nothing worse than finally finding a Wi-Fi spot only to have your phone die.

Pack These Essentials

While the contents of your checked bag will largely depend on the climate you’re visiting, you’ll want most of your trip’s essentials easily accessible in your carry-on. Start with this international travel checklist of items to pack:

For more ideas, check out our ultimate packing list.

Consider taking photos of your packed suitcase (both inside and out) in case it gets lost. That way, airline employees will know what to look for, and you’ll know what was inside if you don’t get it back and need to file a claim.

Wish you had more vacation time? Workers in the United States often complain about their lack of vacation time. The average American employee gets just 12 paid time off (PTO) days per year, compared to the much more generous 25 days off European workers enjoy. If a move to Europe isn’t in the cards for you, don’t worry—you can still travel frequently and keep your job.

About 10,000 hotel workers walked off of their jobs over the weekend, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, due to unresolved contract negotiations. Members of the UNITE HERE union are asking for “higher wages, fair staffing and workloads, and the reversal of COVID-era cuts.” Many workers live paycheck to paycheck, and their pay does not cover the cost of living.

Workers in nine cities and twenty-six hotels are currently on strike, and the possibility of more strikes looms large if no resolution is found. The cities with current strikes are Boston, Greenwich, Honolulu, Kauai, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Baltimore, and Seattle. The list of hotels with striking workers can be found here and will be updated live as more hotels join and as the strikes end. UNITE HERE represents workers from Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott hotels.

Many hotel workers are struggling during a time when hotels posted record-high daily rates and revenue, yet many hotels remain understaffed.

If you’re nervous about an upcoming trip or are currently staying at a hotel impacted by the strikes, we’ve got answers to common questions you may have.

What If There Is a Strike at the Hotel Where I am Staying?

As travelers, this is a legitimate concern. As difficult as it may be, you should never cross a picket line, so if you are staying at an affected hotel, ask for a refund and rebook at a different hotel. FairHotel.org allows you to search for your hotel to see if a strike may impact it.

If rebooking is impossible for some reason (there is no other hotel in the area, and all other hotels are sold out), ask management to determine how the strike will impact housekeeping, room service, and amenities.
Be kind and considerate to those workers still working, as their workload is likely much higher than what it typically is. If you have to cross the picket line, talk to those striking, and show your support for them. Remember: they aren’t protesting you, they are protesting management.

I Have a Future Booking At A Hotel That is Currently Striking

If you are booked for a stay at a hotel with workers who are currently striking, what you do depends heavily on when your trip is. If your trip is within the next week, try to find another hotel in the area that is not part of the strike. If it is well into the future, keep an eye on the news, and as you get closer to your vacation, if the hotels are still striking, rebook it elsewhere.

What Hotels Are Impacted by the Strike?

As mentioned above, UNITE HERE represents workers from Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott hotels. While it is only a handful of their hotels that are currently impacted by the strike, consider booking at a different hotel if you have an upcoming stay at one of those hotels, just to be safe.

Alternate Hotels Due to The Strike

Here are some alternate hotels to book in each city that is impacted by the strike:

Boston – Encore Boston Harbor

Greenwich – Delamar Greenwich Harbor

Honolulu – Ala Moana Hotel

Kauai – OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa

San Francisco – Chancellor Hotel

San Diego – Hotel Del Coronado

San Jose – Four Points by Sheraton San Jose Downtown

Baltimore – Horseshoe Casino Baltimore

Seattle – Coast Seattle Downtown Hotel by APA

Check out UNITE HERE’s guide for further tips on what to do during a strike, including what to do if you are invited to a wedding at a hotel with striking workers.

The SmarterTravel team racks up a lot of miles every year, and we’ve become experts in packing. From weekend getaways to extended international journeys, our seasoned editors have encountered and overcome a wide array of packing challenges, developing some great strategies along the way.

The tips we’ve gathered can help streamline your packing process, maximize your luggage space, and ensure you’re well-prepared for any trip. We’re excited to share our favorite packing tips, each based on real-world travel experiences and lessons learned on the road. These insights will help you pack smarter and travel lighter.

Use Packing Cubes (in the Right Situation)

I always use packing cubes if I’m traveling with a duffle bag or backpack as my primary luggage. Otherwise, I wind up getting annoyed digging around trying to find the one item I need that’s inevitably at the bottom. My favorite packing cubes are Eagle Creek’s Pack-Its, which compress your clothes so you can fit even more in.

Pack-It® Isolate Compression Cube S
Eagle Creek

Depending on what makes sense for my trip, I organize my packing cubes in one of two ways:

  1. By day: Each cube contains a complete outfit for a specific day.
  2. By category: Separate cubes for pants, tops, and other clothing types.

I label each cube using a piece of tape with a written description of what’s inside. This allows me to quickly see what’s inside without opening them.

However, I never use packing cubes if I’m traveling with a wheeled suitcase—in that case, I prefer to roll my clothes to keep them wrinkle-free (and to fit more in my bag.)

Keep a Travel Go-Bag

Packing is the worst part of preparing for a trip. To save time, I keep two small bags packed and ready to go at all times. One is my toiletries kit, which I refill after each trip. The second is my in-flight bag, a small pouch I keep stocked with any essentials I’ll need on the plane (headphones, hand sanitizer, charging cable, lip balm, and tissues.)

When it’s time to hit the road again, it feels like my packing is already halfway done.

Combine Rolling and Folding

When it comes to the rolling versus folding debate, I stand right in the middle. The best way to pack a suitcase is to combine both strategies.

I fold thicker, heavy-weight items like sweaters and jeans and lay them flat at the bottom of the suitcase. Lightweight items like t-shirts and tank tops get rolled up and layered on top.

Finally, I squeeze small miscellaneous items like socks, undergarments, and swimsuits into the empty spaces in between (Bonus tip: if packing a pair of shoes, stuff your socks inside to save space).
