Imagine waking up in a quiet, dark room and pressing a button by your bed. As your blackout curtains slowly glide open, the dazzling lights of Times Square burst into view. Sound like your perfect vacation? Check into the Tempo by Hilton Times Square, where you can sleep above Times Square.

Making its debut in August 2023, this property isn’t just new to New York City–it’s Hilton’s very first Tempo hotel. The Tempo brand caters to wellness-focused travelers who want to maintain their daily routines while exploring new destinations. While the energetic buzz of Times Square pulses just outside, the hotel offers a peaceful sanctuary for guests seeking a calm retreat from the city’s endless excitement.

The Location

Standing in the heart of Times Square, you can’t miss TSX Broadway, a gleaming 46-story tower that’s a new addition to Manhattan’s skyline. The tower houses retail space, the historic Palace Theatre, and the Tempo Hotel, which occupies 36 floors.

The Tempo has its own entrance on the ground floor at the corner of 47th Street and 7th Avenue, but guests must take an elevator to the 11th floor to reach the lobby.

This prime location puts guests within walking distance to many famous New York City landmarks, including Broadway Theatre, Rockefeller Center, and Radio City Music Hall. The hotel is within easy reach of a number of different transportation hubs, and both Grand Central Station and Penn Station are under a mile away.

The Rooms

Hilton Tempo Times Square Ball Drop Room
Hilton

The Tempo’s guest rooms are remarkably spacious for a central Manhattan hotel, starting at a generous 235 square feet. Each room showcases the city through dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, while natural light wood tones create a serene sanctuary from the urban energy below.

Rest comes easily on the exclusive Sealy Accelerate mattresses, specially designed for Tempo properties. The unexpectedly roomy bathrooms elevate the experience with full-sized Apotheke amenities and a clever touch—a Bluetooth-enabled mirror speaker perfect for livening up your morning routine. Practical amenities aren’t forgotten, with each room featuring a minifridge for drinks or dining leftovers.

For fitness enthusiasts, nine specially designed Wellness Rooms offer an innovative perk: an in-room Peloton bike positioned by the window, complete with access to the full workout library via flatscreen TV—no subscription needed. These wellness-focused havens also come equipped with yoga mats and resistance bands.

We stayed in one of the 31 coveted Ball Drop corner rooms, offering an unforgettable perspective on Times Square. From this privileged vantage point, you could spy on the famous New Year’s Eve ball and watch the constant theater of street performers and crowds below.

Dining

Hilton Tempo Times Square Restaurant
Hilton

Need to grab a quick bite on the go? Tempo’s partnership with Bluestone Lane, the renowned Australian-inspired coffee roaster and cafe, is the perfect place to start your day. Their Grab & Go section offers a selection of healthy options, from seasonal salads and artisanal sandwiches to fresh fruit and an array of specialty espresso drinks, teas, and juices.

For a more leisurely dining experience, head to Highball, the hotel’s signature restaurant, which features shareable plates with nods to local dishes, like reimagined New York-style hot dogs and artisanal sliders.

Amenities

Hilton Tempo Times Square Fitness Center
Hilton

It’s no surprise that the star amenity at this wellness-focused hotel is the fitness center, which is open 24/7 for guests. This light-filled room has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, Peloton bikes, an array of cardio and strength equipment, and a filtered water station to refill your water bottle for the day.

In the heart of Jackson, New Hampshire, surrounded by the majestic White Mountains, lies The Wentworth, a historic inn that recently underwent a $4 million renovation, breathing new life into the property. The refurbished guest rooms and suites have been thoughtfully designed to honor the natural beauty of the area, featuring warm earth tones and plush furnishings. Guests will notice nods to the inn’s history throughout the property—The Wentworth was originally built in 1869 by Joshua Trickey as a wedding gift to his daughter, and previously operated as a country inn named “Thorn Mountain House.” Throughout the hotel, you’ll see vintage posters and ads showcasing the grand resort.

Common area at The Wentworth
The Wentworth

This charming boutique retreat offers a tranquil escape from everyday life, with an abundance of year-round outdoor activities right at your doorstep. Whether you’re seeking adventure in the form of hiking, golfing, or cross-country skiing, or simply want a spa day, The Wentworth caters to all.

The Location

The Wentworth Inn enjoys a prime position in the heart of Jackson Village, a quintessential New England town that serves as a gateway to the White Mountains. This four-season retreat offers plenty to do at any time of the year. We visited in the summer and took advantage of the numerous hiking trails located within a short drive from the hotel.

Wentworth Golf Club golf course with purple flowers
Wentworth Club

The Wentworth offers guests complimentary passes to Great Glen Trails, a great spot for hiking, walking, biking, and running. Golfers will be in heaven here, as The Wentworth Golf Club is right next door.

In winter months, the hotel is located close to a number of popular ski areas and offers cold weather activities on the property, such as ice skating.

There are several restaurants, bars, and shops within Jackson itself. However, if you’re looking for something bigger, the popular resort town of North Conway is just eight miles away and offers outlet malls and more dining options.

The Rooms

Each of the 61 rooms at The Wentworth are carefully designed, and feature unique artwork crafted from vintage postcards, along with whimsical touches like antique snowshoes mounted above the beds.

There are four types of accommodations available to book at The Wentworth:

  • Cottages
  • Main Inn Rooms
  • Spa Suites
  • Vacation rentals

The Wentworth

We stayed in a newly renovated spa suite. When you walk into the room, you’re greeted with a separate sitting room (complete with a cozy gas fireplace and padded window seat perfect for reading). The oversized bedroom features a four-poster bed and a small desk area, and the marble bathroom offers dual sinks and a steam shower to help you unwind and relax your muscles after an outdoor adventure.

The Wentworth

The real highlight of the spa suites is the private enclosed deck with your very own outdoor hot tub. The cedar deck is enclosed on three sides and has a large window overlooking the hotel’s grounds, allowing plenty of privacy while you soak. If you get tired of the view, there’s an outdoor flatscreen television and speakers so you can watch a movie from the tub.

On each guest floor within the hotel, you’ll find a small galley, kitted out with complimentary refreshments and treats. The refrigerator is stocked with sparkling water, juice, and yogurt, and in the freezer, you’ll find a sweet treat—individual cups of gelato.

The Wentworth

Throughout the day, new temptations will appear at the pantry, including house-made granola and pastries in the morning and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in the evening. Coffee and filtered water are available at any time of day.

Dining

Guests can add dining packages to their stay at The Wentworth, which include breakfast and a four-course dinner in the restaurant.

The hotel has one main fine dining restaurant, the 1869 Room, and a casual lounge, Alpine.

At the 1869 Room, Chef Brian Gazda sources fresh and in-season fare from local suppliers, and even has a certificated local destination from the New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant Connection. You’ll see meat, produce, and dairy on the menu from nearby farms, including the Vermont Butter and Cheese Company, Lucky 7 Ranch, and New Hampshire Blueberry.

Restaurant 1869 Room at the Wentworth
The Wentworth

The dining room harkens back to an earlier resort era, with white tablecloths, chandeliers, and four-course meals served every evening. The highlight of my dinner was the Maple Brook Farms burrata served with a ricotta coulis, white peach chutney, grilled asparagus, and toasted hazelnut, but everything was cooked impeccably.

Breakfast is served in the same location, with a buffet offered on weekends.

The Alpine room and bar at the Wentworth
The Wentworth

If you’re looking for a quick meal, Alpine is a casual bar and lounge area where you can get snacks or light bites, either inside or out on the lovely patio. I’ve already decided I need to return in the winter, when Alpine will be serving fondue.

Amenities

The Wentworth charges a $30 per night resort fee, which includes:

Close up of an e-bike at the Wentworth
The Wentworth
  • Outdoor games and activities including tennis (racquets and balls provided), volleyball, croquet, badminton, ladder rung toss, and cornhole

The Dunes on the Waterfront, an iconic resort in Ogunquit, Maine, has reopened under new management after a $10 million renovation. This seaside property, which has been a fixture in the area for over 85 years, features 23 charming white cottages with green shutters and windowboxes full of flowers. Set over 12 acres of oceanfront land, each standalone cottage has plenty of privacy. The renovation has updated the resort with modern amenities while preserving its historic charm.

The Dunes on the Waterfront occupies a peaceful location on a tidal river across from Ogunquit Beach, which was recently named one of the best beaches in America. Guests can enjoy amenities such as a heated oceanfront pool, kayaking, and paddleboarding or simply relax on their screened-in cottage porch. The resort’s location, a short distance from Ogunquit’s downtown area, allows visitors to explore local shops and restaurants easily.

The Location

The resort is separated from Ogunquit Beach by a narrow tidal river. You can easily walk across the dry riverbed at low tide in approximately five minutes and be on the sandy beach. At high tide, you can take a complimentary boat ride from the hotel to the beach or borrow a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard to make it across.

Katie Nielson

The property sits on a quiet residential street outside Ogunquit’s busy downtown area. I recommend borrowing one of the resort’s bikes (locks, helmets, lights, and baskets are provided) to explore—so you can avoid the traffic that often gridlocks downtown.

The Rooms

The Dunes boasts 23 renovated cottages, each with a unique name and character, like “Driftwood” or “Seagrass.” While preserving their classic coastal exteriors, the interiors have been updated with modern amenities, including gas fireplaces, spacious bathrooms, and kitchenettes.

I stayed in Lookout, a two-bedroom waterfront cottage furnished with local antiques and artwork. Modern comforts included Cuddledown bedding, plush robes, a wet bar stocked with complimentary drinks (including Whispering Angel wine) and snacks, a coffeemaker, a gas fireplace, and a screened-in porch.

Katie Nielson

The property’s thoughtful layout ensures water views for nearly all cottages. Guests can choose from various room configurations, ranging from one to three bedrooms, to suit their needs.

Dining

While The Dunes on the Waterfront doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, it encourages guests to explore the over 40 dining options nearby. The resort has partnered with its neighbor, the popular Ogunquit Lobster Pound, offering guests a complimentary dessert upon presenting their room key.

Mornings at The Dunes are a treat. Each day begins with a doorstep delivery of pastries from the local Bread & Roses bakery, accompanied by The New York Times and a thermos of hot coffee. Sitting on the screened-in porch while reading the paper and sipping coffee was the highlight of my mornings here.

Amenities

Katie Nielson

The Dunes on the Waterfront fully embraces its seaside location, with amenities centered around getting out on the water. The beautiful heated pool overlooks the ocean and has plenty of sunbeds with umbrellas for lounging under. Bright yellow inflatable tubes in the pool allow guests to float while reading (or napping).

Other amenities include:

  • Lawn games
  • Firepit and s’mores
  • Complimentary bikes
  • Free shuttle service into Ogunquit and nearby beaches
  • Complimentary use of kayaks, standup paddleboards, and rowboats
  • Pastries, coffee, and newspapers delivered to rooms each morning

Price and How to Book

Rates start at around $1,000 per night and can be booked directly with Dunes on the Waterfront.

The Botania Relais & Spa is a sprawling botanical wonderland in which flowering plants, thermal pools, produce gardens, and artfully placed villas welcome guests to a Mediterranean island getaway.

The Location: Ischia, Italy

The Botania Relais & Spa is located on the sunny island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples. Ischia is a roughly 18 square mile volcanic island, with six towns and a rolling landscape that culminates in the central Mount Epomeo. Accessible from the mainland by ferry, Ischia is an ideal weekend trip from Naples.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - View of Ischia, Italy from the Resort
Carol McPherson

The island is known for its sandy beaches, castles, hilly neighborhoods, and for being home to the Fonte delle Ninfe Nitrodi, the world’s oldest spa. The Botania is situated in the town of Forio and is a fifteen minute drive from Ischia Porto, a small port lined with seaside restaurants and tiny shops.

Amenities & Services

Guests will not have to lift a finger during their stay at the Botania. No sooner had a member of my group spilled sauce on her shirt during dinner than a staff member was by her side with a laundry brush and miracle stain remover. From a basket of free sunblock by the pool to flip flops provided in-room for the spa, I couldn’t think of a single thing I’d want that wasn’t already provided for.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Indoor Thermal Baths
Carol McPherson

The standout amenity is unquestionably the thermal baths. There are many thermal spas on Ischia, typically charging a 40-50 euro (about $43-$54 USD) entry fee. The two indoor and two outdoor thermal baths at the Botania, however, are free for guests to use. The indoor baths are part of the onsite spa and don’t require a reservation, although one is suggested if trying to use the baths at peak times.

Other amenities include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Luggage transport between reception and room
  • Shuttle service (upon request) to nearby beach
  • Room service
  • Turndown service
  • Outdoor Pool
  • Indoor gym
  • Outdoor gym
  • Outdoor yoga classes
  • Cooking classes at Nonna Marì
  • Indoor hot springs
  • Outdoor hot springs
  • Botanical garden
  • Spa

The Property

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Reception Area
Carol McPherson

The Botania Relais & Spa is unique in the world of luxury hotels, earning a One Michelin Key rating. The 48 rooms are distributed among 10 villas that are built into an extensive botanical garden. Guests are welcome to explore the garden, which includes outdoor hot springs, hidden picnic areas, an outdoor gym, an amphitheater, and more. The entire property spans 3 hectares, nearly impossible to see all it has to offer in just one visit.

Among the flowering plants and fruit trees there are also produce and herb gardens that supply the resort’s onsite restaurants.

The Rooms

Botania Relais

Each room and suite at the Botania Relais & Spa has an Italian marble bathroom, queen to king sized beds, and outdoor spaces. The rooms are distributed across ten villas, each of which is central to hotel amenities like the restaurant, pool, and spa. Walking paths connect the villas to the main check in area and the rest of the botanical garden.

Botania Relais

I stayed in a Superior Room with a garden patio, tucked away behind the path to the pool and bar. The outdoor space was shared with adjoining rooms, but the surrounding walls of vegetation gave plenty of privacy. The interior was spacious, with a small table and seating area, large wardrobe, desk, flat screen television, and king-sized bed. The bathroom was luxurious but still maintained the character of the resort, with a gorgeous blue tiled shower, heated towel rack, and large vanity.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - superior room with terrace garden view bedroom lighting
Botania Relais

A feature I particularly enjoyed was the ability to control most of the lights from the bedside switch letting me skip the awkward bedtime shuffle across the room to dim the lights. Each side of the bed also offered a small reading light on a maneuverable arm.

The wifi password is not immediately obvious in the room, so make sure to get it from the front desk at check in before settling in for the night.

Dining

The local flavors of Ischia are reflected in the three dining options at Botania, rich in fresh seafood, local produce, and—of course—top-tier pasta.

Il Corbezzolo

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Corbezzolo Restaurant
Botania Relais & Spa

Il Corbezzolo is an upscale Michelin Star dining experience serving southern Italian fare crafted from local ingredients and the resort’s own gardens. Fish here is always fresh, sourced from the catch of the day brought in by local fisherman. Finish off your meal with a sip of rucolino, an arugula aperitif with a savory kick that is distilled right on the island.

The resort’s breakfast buffet is served daily from 7:30am to 10:30 am terrace outside Il Corbezzolo and includes your choice of eggs, side salad, fresh baked pastries and breads, fruit, juice, and coffee.

Il Mirto

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Il Mirto Restaurant

Everything on the Il Mirto menu is vegetarian or vegan, earning it the island’s first Michelin Green Star for sustainability. In addition to its meat-free menu, the restaurant also works to eliminate single-use plastics, work with sustainable suppliers, and tailors the menu to center seasonally available ingredients.

Nonna Marì

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Nonna Marì Restaurant
Botania Relais & Spa

Nonna Marì is the most casual dining option, built around the concept of ‘your grandmother’s kitchen.’ There’s no set menu—guests are invited to join for whatever is on offer that evening, much like dropping by your grandma’s house for dinner and a visit. Nonna Marì also offers cooking classes where you can try your hand at crafting authentic Italian cuisine.

La Grotta Bar

La Grotta Bar is built into a cave, serving craft cocktails and light bites in a cool intimate atmosphere illuminated by ambient lighting and decorated with cozy jewel-toned furniture.

Deciding on a Cape Cod hotel can be tough. Do you want a sprawling resort or a quaint escape? Pelham on Earle combines the best of both worlds, offering a quiet boutique experience along with access to the amenities at the larger Pelham House Resort down the street.

Photo for the Pelham on Earle Hotel Outside

This recently renovated hotel offers a low-key coastal retreat in the charming town of West Harwich, Massachusetts. Leave the highway behind, turn down quiet Earle Street, and just before the street dead-ends at the beach, you’ll find Pelham on Earle. The property consists of 27 ground-level hotel rooms facing out into a lush courtyard bursting with hydrangeas. You’ll find a pool, lawn games, and plenty of places to lounge out here.

The Location

Set on a quiet residential street less than a block from Earle Road Beach, Pelham on Earle enjoys a serene location. If you want to experience a quintessential Cape Cod beach town on your vacation, the livelier village of Harwich Port is less than a five-minute drive away, where you’ll find plenty of small shops and eateries to explore.

The hotel is a short bike ride to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a 25-mile off-street paved path that’s a delight to cycle in the summer.

Dining

Pelham on Earle's Restaurant, Tides Kitchen and Bar, indoor/outdoor

Pelham on Earle has one restaurant, Tides Kitchen & Bar, that is open daily for lunch and dinner. This intimate, airy eatery serves a tightly curated Mexican-inspired menu of tacos, nachos, and quesadillas, along with classic Cape Cod staples such as lobster rolls and local oysters.

The drinks are innovative and refreshing. Standout favorites included the Shipwrecked Margarita, made with tequila, Bauchant, fresh lime, and agave and topped with a Grand Marnier floater, and the Hydrangea Nectar, crafted with Gray Whale gin, lemon juice, and butterfly pea flower simple syrup.

Food Spread from Pelham on Earle's Restaurant, Tides Kitchen and Bar

Guests can also take the hotel’s free shuttle to Pelham House Resort and dine at The Rooftop or Pool House. Be sure to make an advance reservation to snag a table at The Rooftop, a beautiful glass-enclosed, heated deck popular with tourists and locals alike for its stunning ocean views. Come for dinner at sunset, where you’ll enjoy gorgeous scenery against a backdrop of live music.

The Pool House is a great spot for lunch. It is located next to the heated, saltwater pool overlooking the ocean, and you can dine next to the water while in the pool (or relaxing next to it).

The Rooms

Pelham on Earle’s rooms are all on the ground level, with walkout access to the pool and restaurant. Each room has an Adirondack-style loveseat for guests to enjoy some private space outside.

Pelham on Earle - Accommodation

I stayed in a Pelham King Room with Fireplace, a spacious room with cathedral ceilings. Air conditioning and a ceiling fan kept the room cool despite the summer heat, but there’s also a gas fireplace to make things cozy if nights get chilly. The room was fully stocked with a microwave, minifridge, and Keurig coffee maker.

Amenities

Earle Road Beach is just steps away from the property and offers plenty of space to sunbathe or frolic in the waves. As a thoughtful touch, all rooms at Pelham on Earle are stocked with a wagon filled with beach essentials, including chairs and towels.

Aerial view of the Pelham on Earle

If you’d prefer a quieter beach, guests of Pelham on Earle can take a free shuttle to the larger Pelham House Resort (located a few minutes’ drive away) and utilize the private beach there from 11 am Sundays through 3 pm on Fridays.

Other amenities include:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Complimentary coffee and tea each morning
  • Free yoga classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings
  • Nightly beach bonfires Sundays through Thursdays
  • Free parking

If you’re looking for the quintessential Ritz-Carlton experience in Washington, D.C., look no further than the Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C.  With its elegant, timeless atmosphere, personalized service, posh accommodations, and prime location, this West End gem ticks all the boxes for a luxurious stay.

The hotel prides itself on attentive service from its staff, who are trained to cater to guests’ needs throughout their stay. The accommodations are designed with an eye for sophistication, offering spacious rooms and high-end amenities (like Dyson Air Wraps and second computer monitors) that make your stay exceptional. Situated in the heart of the city, the hotel’s location allows guests to easily explore D.C.’s major attractions.

For those looking to indulge, The Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C. has the option to book rooms on the Club Level, which include access to a private lounge that serves unlimited food and drinks throughout the day.

Ritz Carlton Washington D.C. Courtyard

The Location

There are two Ritz-Carlton properties in Washington, D.C., located just under one mile apart (the other property is in Georgetown). We reviewed the Ritz Carlton on 22nd Street, in the Foggy Bottom/West End neighborhood.

The hotel is close to several Metro stations and is approximately one mile from the National Mall and many iconic D.C. attractions.

It’s also easily accessible from Ronald Regan Washington National Airport (DCA), which is less than a 20-minute drive (or a similar ride on the Metro).

Dining

The Ritz-Carlton offers two distinct restaurant experiences for guests. The first is The Saga, a high-end Spanish restaurant helmed by renowned Chef Enrique Limardo. This establishment features inventive Spanish cuisine with Latin influences and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Saga’s tapas bar is open in the evenings and is a fun place for dinner if you want to try a variety of dishes.

Quadrant Bar & Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Washington D.C.

For those seeking a more lounge-like atmosphere, Quadrant Bar & Lounge is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Grab tickets to Quadrant’s frequent live music events for a lively night out.

In addition to its dine-in options, The Ritz-Carlton also offers 24-hour room service for guests.

The Rooms

The rooms at The Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C. are a serene haven from the busy city, providing a tranquil escape in the heart of downtown. Designed with a sophisticated color palette of slate gray and blue hues, complemented by chic accent patterns, bold graphic carpets, and brass accents, these accommodations create a modern yet comfortable ambiance. Cheeky design nods to Washington, D.C., such as an artsy photo of the infamously long escalators in the Metro station and a silhouette portrait of Abraham Lincoln, lend a sense of place and set the rooms apart from a generic hotel experience.

Spacious and stylish, these accommodations offer ample room and thoughtful amenities like dedicated sitting areas and numerous USB ports to ensure a comfortable workspace. For those working remotely, the hotel can even provide the convenience of a second monitor upon request.

In addition to a plush king-sized bed topped with Frette linens, the room offered plenty of space to relax, including a couch, a cozy armchair, and a small workspace. The Italian marble bathroom was equally impressive, with a separate soaking tub, shower, and water closet. The bathroom was stocked with full-size Diptique toiletries and even a flat iron in addition to the blow dryer, a rare (but appreciated) hotel amenity.

Service

Ritz Carlton Washington D.C. Spa
Ritz Carlton Washington D.C.

One of the Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C.’s greatest strengths lies in its expert staff. Each team member exudes attentiveness, friendliness, and a willingness to go above and beyond, ensuring a perfect stay for every guest. Throughout my visit, I was delighted by countless thoughtful touches that elevated the experience. Upon leaving or arriving at the hotel, I was consistently offered chilled bottled water, a welcome reprieve on hot and humid D.C. days. Even more remarkable was the surprise of finding a white chocolate replica of the Washington Monument in my room, a delightful and personal touch that left a lasting impression.

Amenities

Although the Ritz-Carlton doesn’t have its own fitness center, guests can use the attached Equinox Sports Club for a $15 per day fee (the fee is waived for club level guests). This massive multi-level gym is one of the best in D.C., featuring a pool and modern equipment such as Woodway treadmills.

Other amenities include:

  • 24-Hour Room Service
  • Turndown Service
  • Laundry/dry cleaning
  • Luxurious robes and slippers
  • Free Wifi
  • Free coffee and tea
  • Complimentary presidential-themed cookies and drinks in the lobby

Club Level

The Ritz-Carlton Washington D.C. Club Level
The Ritz-Carlton Washington D.C.

The Club Level adds another layer of luxury to the already elevated Ritz Carlton experience. Club Level guests have access to the Club Lounge, located on the ninth floor. The club lounge is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. and serves breakfast, lunch, light snacks, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and drinks at various times of the day.

All food and beverages are complimentary. The lounge is well stocked with liquor, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages, including sparkling water, fresh fruit juices, and other snacks.

Club-level guests also receive the following perks:

  • Complimentary access to the Equinox Sports Club
  • Pressing of two items per day
  • Private concierge service
  • Complimentary coffee or tea with a wake-up call

My favorite perk was the coffee wake-up call—simply let the front desk know what time you want to be woken up, and someone will knock on your door with coffee and tea. There’s something extra decadent about starting your day with a hot beverage in bed.

The club-level staff is extremely attentive and remembers each guest by name. The dedicated Club concierge reached out to me before my stay to see if I had any requests and was able to arrange for amenities (like an in-room fitness kit, second computer monitor, and Dyson Air Wrap) to be waiting for me in my room upon arrival.

Price and How to Book

Room rates start at around $480 per night, and Club Level rooms start at around $749 per night. Book now on Expedia for the best rates.

Hot Springs, Arkansas, has been a tourist destination for over a century. After exploring the National Park and surrounding areas, Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court, a traditional motor lodge, provides the basic accommodations you need for a good night’s sleep. Completely renovated between 2016 and 2017, the decor is vintage-inspired and gives you the feel of how many people traveled in the middle of the 20th century.

Cottage Court provides accommodations perfect for small families and couples looking for simple accommodations without frills or fanfare.

Location: Hot Springs, Arkansas

It is located just off the main road in Hot Springs, minutes from the entrance to the National Park, and Central Ave, the hotbed of Hot Springs.  Bathhouse Row is less than a mile away, as is the Gangster Museum – both must-see stops on your trip to Hot Springs.

Property: Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court

Cottage Court is a renovated motor motel and provides a retro feel with modern amenities. Amenities include:

  • Free WiFi
  • Coffee Makers in every room
  • Flat Screen Smart TV’s
  • Free on-site, off-street parking

Rooms: Basic yet Comfortable

I’m not going to lie; Cottage Court is not a luxury accommodation, but it is clean and comfortable. My room had two queen-sized beds, and a bureau. I would have liked a chair or table for working, but I’m not sure there was enough room. For most guests, this wouldn’t be an issue, but for anyone traveling for business, you may want to be sure to book a Deluxe King or Queen, which have small sitting areas. They also offer a petite queen and single queen rooms. Each room has a single-cup coffee maker, a hairdryer, and basic toiletries. The bathroom was small but clean, and I can only assume the original toilets were smaller than the current ones, as my leg hit the toilet paper dispenser and I had to move out of the way to get the toilet paper; however, I was rarely in my room, and it certainly served its purpose. I could not hear the guests in the room next to me (a fellow travel writer was in the room next to me and did a full workout in her room, which I did not hear a peep of); however, some street noise and outside noise did drift into my room, like a truck starting up early in the morning and a dog barking on its morning walk.

With 950 rooms spread over more than 300 acres in the Sonoran Desert, the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa feels more like a small city than a resort—that is, a five-star city that’s purpose-built for relaxation.

Guests don’t have to venture off-resort for anything. There are two 18-hole golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo, a stunning spa, 17 pickleball courts, and six restaurants that cater to every whim and desire. The true star of the resort, and the reason that I chose the JW Desert Ridge, is the property’s new 140,000-square-foot AquaRidge Waterpark.

If your dream vacation involves floating around a heated lazy river while sipping a frozen drink, this is the place to do it.

The Location

The JW Desert Ridge is a destination in its own right—just head to Marriott Drive and you’ll see the complex arise like an oasis in the distance. If you choose to venture off-property, the hotel is right down the street from Desert Ridge Marketplace, a massive outdoor mall with plenty of restaurants and shops.

The resort is also less than 30 minutes from both Phoenix and Scottsdale. It took me around 25 minutes to drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to the JW Desert Ridge.

Dining

Dining @ JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT
MullenLowe | JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT

With six restaurants on-site, deciding where to dine at the JW Desert Ridge can be difficult. My favorite eatery was Tia Carmen, a stylish Southwestern restaurant by renowned chef Angelo Sosa. I recommend grabbing a table at the beautiful outdoor patio for both breakfast and dinner.

Tia Carmen puts a unique local twist on classic dishes. My surprise favorites were the romaine salad with fried egg dressing, fennel, radish, and manchego cheese, and the avocado aguachile topped with a date sesame crumble, Persian cucumber, and serrano chile. Tia Carmen lays out a massive buffet spread at breakfast, but you’ll want to save room for the made-to-order omelet station.

Beyond Tia Carmen, the resort offers several other enticing dining experiences. Kembara serves dishes inspired by Asian street food culture, and also has a lovely outdoor patio. For a post-golf beer or casual meal, head to Meritage, located next to the Wildfire Golf Club, which features over 50 Arizona craft beers on tap.

For a casual poolside dining option, the Just a Splash Bar & Kitchen offers everything from french fries to refreshing fruit smoothies. Those seeking a lighter, health-conscious meal can head to the airy Revive Spa Bistro, which features a menu of fresh, flavorful fare.

The Rooms

Room @ JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT
MullenLowe | JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT

The JW Desert Ridge Resort recently underwent an extensive $80 million renovation, and the results are evident in the resort’s modern new accommodations. The refreshed guest rooms draw inspiration from the surrounding Sonoran Desert, embracing a soothing earth-toned color palette that seamlessly blends with the natural landscape. All rooms feature private outdoor sitting areas, allowing guests to relax and soak in the picturesque views. They also feature JW Marriott’s signature luxury bedding, Aromatherapy Associates bath amenities, plush robes, and convenient minifridges.

During my stay, I had the pleasure of occupying a Pool View King Guest Room, which was situated on a high floor, offering panoramic vistas of the pool area and the majestic mountains in the distance. Spanning an impressive 448 square feet, the room provided ample space to stretch out, including a comfortable sitting area with an L-shaped couch and an oversized balcony perfect for catching some sun. For those who prefer a more private soaking experience, the bathroom features a large, indulgent bathtub, providing a serene alternative to the resort’s many inviting hot tubs.

Pool

Waterslide @ JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT
MullenLowe | JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT

With its desert location, the AquaRidge WaterPark is a welcome oasis. My favorite feature was definitely the lazy river. Take one of the inflatable tubes and gently float with the current underneath the hot Arizona sun. For more of a thrill, three waterslides are guaranteed to get your heart-rate pumping. The Gullywasher is a fun two-person ride that sends you through twists and turns before launching you up a vertical wall to finish.

The JW Desert Ridge attracts many kids who love the waterslides and splash pad, so it’s nice that the resort has a dedicated adults-only area, Sky Island, offering a more serene experience with whirlpools, bungalows, and daybeds.

Spa

The Revive Spa at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort is a true haven of wellness and relaxation, spanning an impressive 28,000 square feet and boasting 41 elegantly appointed treatment rooms. I enjoyed indulging in a therapeutic 50-minute massage during which the resort’s experienced masseuse expertly unknotted every tight muscle in my back. Afterward, I unwound further in the dedicated relaxation area with a heated lavender neck pillow to help my muscles relax even more.

At the heart of the Revive Spa experience is the Sanctuary lap pool, which is lined with towering palm trees and private cabanas. It offers the perfect setting to recline poolside and take in the resort’s dramatic natural surroundings.

Beyond the indulgent spa treatments, the Revive Spa also features a full-service salon, providing haircuts, coloring, manicures, and pedicures.

Price and How to Book

Rates for the JW Marriott Desert Ridge start at around $280 and can be booked on Expedia

Wake up to a stunning glass-enclosed sanctuary immersed in the breathtaking beauty of Sedona’s legendary red rocks. Welcome to Ambiente, a groundbreaking “landscape hotel” that elevates the art of seclusion and sustainability to new heights.

This adults-only oasis features 40 private, cube-shaped “atriums” elegantly poised above the rugged terrain, each offering panoramic views through its glass walls. Add world-class dining, a pampering spa, and impeccable service, and you have the recipe for an unforgettable Sedona escape.

I stayed in one of Ambiente’s Forest Reflections Atriums, which overlooks the property’s creek and lush forest, with Sedona’s iconic red rocks in the distance.

The Location

Red rock formations surrounding the Ambiente hotel in Sedona
Ambiente

While Ambiente offers a serene, nature-centric escape, it’s actually located just minutes from lively Uptown Sedona, the main tourist area packed with art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

The resort is well-positioned for exploring Sedona’s renowned hiking and biking trails. With parking at a premium at many trailheads, I appreciated being able to walk out of Ambiente and directly onto the Adobe Jack trailhead, which winds through the area’s iconic red rock formations and provides access to miles of scenic footpaths.

Dining

Bar at the Ambiente hotel in Sedona
Ambiente

Helmed by Chef David Duncan, Ambiente’s culinary program focuses on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Pull up a chair poolside at The Drifter for a casual brunch or lunch. Here, guests can indulge in a range of options, from lighter fare like the Taste of Spring Salad with bok choy, daikon, pear, pepitas, and pomegranate to more indulgent choices such as the Wagyu Beef sliders.

For a more elevated dining experience, Forty1 is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, open nightly for dinner. The menu showcases a Southwestern flair, with standout dishes like the Tempeh served with shishito coconut cream, thai basil, and chive flower.

Many guests start their day by having breakfast delivered to their room (a breakfast food and beverage credit is included with every stay). I can verify that taking in the sunrise over the red rocks from the comfort of a plush king-sized bed while sipping coffee is one of the best ways to greet the morning.

With such luxurious accommodations, it can be tempting to simply hole up in one’s private oasis. Fortunately, Ambiente offers room service for both breakfast and dinner. While on a hike, I utilized Ambiente’s convenient concierge texting service to have a cheese plate and cocktail waiting for me on my rooftop terrace when I returned, allowing me to watch the sunset while enjoying a well-deserved snack.

The Rooms

Ambiente

Instead of traditional hotel rooms, Ambiente boasts 40 individual atriums—free-standing cubed structures featuring three mirror-tinted glass walls reflecting the surrounding landscape. (The fourth wall houses the private bathroom and changing area.)  At night, motorized blackout curtains can be closed with the touch of a button.

These atriums are thoughtfully designed to place the landscape front and center, with the plush king-sized bed positioned to offer optimal sightlines of the natural scenery beyond the glass. And in the unlikely event that guests find themselves craving a bit of entertainment, a flat-screen television can be lowered from the ceiling or retracted entirely to maintain an uninterrupted vista.

Each atrium’s small kitchen area is fully stocked with complimentary local treats such as chips and gourmet popcorn. A minifridge offers cold drinks, including regional craft beers (note that alcohol is not included in the rate).

However, the crown jewel of each atrium lies above, where a spiral staircase leads to a private rooftop terrace outfitted with a cozy daybed and firepit. These penthouse-level oases provide the perfect vantage point for soaking up the sun or gazing at the stars. Since Sedona is a designated Dark Sky Community, Ambiente keeps exterior lighting low at night, allowing an unparalleled view of the stars. On clear evenings, you may even spot the Milky Way or remote planets.

All rooms include the following amenities:

  • Organic linens
  • Double sinks with adjustable lighting
  • Hinoki soaking tub
  • Walk-in shower with dual rainheads
  • Towel warmer
  • Byredo toiletries
  • Matouk spa robes
  • Slippers
  • Complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
  • WiFi

Amenities

Ambiente

You’ll hand your car over to the valet as soon as you arrive at Ambiente. The property is entirely car-free, helping to create a serene, peaceful atmosphere. But don’t worry, a complimentary on-call car service is available to whisk you off-property in the resort’s customized Audi RS e-tron if you want to explore the local area.

Once settled in, you’ll be able to take advantage of Ambiente’s wealth of standout amenities, including:

  • Outdoor pool with loungers and hot tub
  • Onsite spa
  • Direct access to over 200 miles of hiking and biking trails
  • Welcome gift of champagne and snacks
  • In-room pour-over coffee station
  • Activities such as sunrise yoga and guided stargazing sessions

Price and How to Book

Rates for Ambiente start at around $1,199 and can be booked directly through the property.

The W Scottsdale blends the W’s signature cheeky style with a touch of local Southwest flair, creating a sophisticated stay in the heart of Old Town. Recently renovated, the property features 241 guest rooms, including 44 lavish suites, all outfitted with the latest high-tech amenities.

Like most W hotels, the atmosphere at this Scottsdale outpost is undeniably trendy and upscale. During the week, the hotel offers a relaxing base from which guests can explore downtown’s lively shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. However, come the weekend, the W Scottsdale transforms into the destination itself, with its infamous adults-only parties taking over the WET Deck outdoor pool.

Whether you’re seeking a convenient home base for discovering Scottsdale or a raucous party scene, the W strikes the perfect balance of metropolitan sophistication and Southwest charm. With its chic design, high-end amenities, and lively social calendar, this is the place to see and be seen in Scottsdale.

The Location

W Scottsdale

With a prime location in Scottsdale’s charming Old Town area, the W Scottsdale is within easy walking distance to an array of art, shopping, and nightlife that make up the city’s buzzing Entertainment District. Tempe is just 15 minutes away, and Phoenix is accessible within 25 minutes.

Just outside the door, you’ll find the Arizona Canal path, a nearly 70-mile multi-use path perfect for jogging or biking. Grab one of the hotel’s bikes and enjoy a breezy ride along the scenic waterfront.

During my visit, I dropped my car off at the valet as soon as I drove in from the airport, and I didn’t need it again until it was time to leave because everything is so close to the hotel.

Dining

The W Scottsdale’s main restaurant, Donabe, is a Japanese steakhouse serving sushi, seafood, and Wagyu atop the hotel’s Wet Deck. Donabe is open for a more casual breakfast and lunch before transitioning into a vibey nighttime scene at dinner. The business casual or “date night” attire dress code is enforced in the evening.

Next to Donabe, you’ll find Cottontail Cafe & Louge, a small nook offering craft cocktails and small bites with pool views.

Down on the W Scottsdale’s first floor, you’ll find the Living Room Lounge (the lobby bar) and Sips on Social (an outdoor patio), where you can drink and mingle with locals and other guests.

The Pool

W Scottsdale

The W Scottsdale’s lively social scene centers around its expansive second-floor pool area. Although the Wet Deck entices guests all week, the party atmosphere heats up on the weekends, when the 21-and-up crowd gathers for high-energy DJ sets and bottle service. Whether unwinding in a private cabana or dancing the night away, the W Scottsdale delivers a quintessential desert oasis experience.

Guests looking to be treated like VIPs can rent one of the private cabanas lining the pool’s perimeter. These luxurious enclaves come equipped with flat-screen TVs, personal attendant service, and perhaps the most important feature during a Scottsdale summer—shade.

The pool is located on the hotel’s second floor, and you can get a sneak peek when you check in by simply looking up—the glass portholes give a glimpse into the pool from below.

The Rooms

The spacious guest rooms at the W Scottsdale exude the brand’s signature sassy style, blending a muted, somewhat retro aesthetic with vibrant pops of color. Playful paintings of martinis and rabbits adorn the walls, complementing the natural wood tones and clean lines of the decor.

I stayed in the W Scottsdale’s Wow Suite, a two-bedroom apartment-style accommodation that truly lived up to its name. Both bedrooms featured plush W Signature king beds, walk-in closets, and ensuite bathrooms stocked with Davines toiletries, Frette slippers, and cozy robes.

In addition to the bedrooms, the 1,500-square-foot Wow Suite boasts a full kitchen, dining area, half bath, separate living room, and private balcony overlooking the pool and Camelback Mountain. For extended stays, the in-suite laundry room with a washer and dryer was a nice convenience.

The Spa

W Scottsdale

After a lively day or night exploring Scottsdale, guests can retreat to the AWAY Spa at the W Scottsdale, the city’s premier wellness and beauty destination. Whether recovering from one of the hotel’s renowned pool parties or preparing for an evening out on the town, the spa’s expert practitioners are on hand to provide the perfect pampering experience.

For post-party rejuvenation, a detox massage paired with a CBD balm enhancement can work wonders. And for those looking to amp up the glamour before a night on the town, the spa’s makeup and lash application offerings can help you get photo-ready.

Price and How to Book

Rooms at The W Scottsdale start at around $195 and can be booked on Expedia
