But before you flop down on the bed, make time to do these eight simple things before anything else. Your health and safety may depend on it.

Your long journey is over and you’re finally alone in your hotel room. Before you flop down on the bed or run to the window to check out the view, make sure you do these eight important things first—they could save you from a ruined night of sleep or an expensive mistake.

Check for Bedbugs

The very first thing you should do when you enter your hotel room is check for bedbugs. Put your luggage inside the bathroom (ideally in the bathtub), where bedbugs are the least likely to be hiding. Next, follow this easy guide to identifying signs of bedbugs.

If your room does have bed bugs, you’ll want to know before you settle in, as these pests are extremely easy to pick up and carry with you to your new room—or worse, back home.

Check the Alarm Clock

In-room alarm clocks are being phased out of hotel rooms in favor of smartphone docking stations, but if your hotel room still has an old-school clock, make sure you check to see if the alarm is set.

If the last guest set a daily alarm for 6 a.m. and never turned it off, you could be rudely awakened earlier than you wanted to.

Better yet, unplug the clock entirely if possible. This will prevent unexpected alarms and help you sleep better without the glowing light (unless the clock has a battery backup).

Check Hiding Spots

Before letting your guard down in your locked hotel room, check these hiding spots to make sure you really are alone: under the bed, in the closet, and in the shower. An intruder could have slipped in before you and could be lying in wait—or something more gruesome. Snopes lists a number of actual incidents in which guests checked into a hotel, complained about a horrible odor in their room, and later discovered a human body hidden under the bed or mattress. They had literally been sleeping on top of a corpse.

Study the Emergency Escape Route

Emergency escape maps are required by law to be posted on the back of the main door to every hotel room. Take a few minutes to orient yourself in the hotel building and to familiarize yourself with the fastest exits (as well as backup routes in case the closest path is blocked).

Hopefully, you’ll never need to use this information during your stay, but in the worst-case scenario of a fire or other emergency where every second counts, these few minutes of preparation could save your life.

Deadbolt the Door

Mistakes can be made, and it’s not uncommon for someone to be given an incorrect room assignment and the key to your room—meaning another guest could accidentally walk into your room, even if the door is locked. When you’re inside your hotel room, always activate the deadbolt or security chain to prevent intruders (or just unexpected visits from hotel staff).

Sanitize

Your room may look clean, but that doesn’t mean it’s sanitary. Wipe down germ hotspots (like light switches and doorknobs) with an antibacterial wipe to stay healthy. And be sure to wipe down the television remote control (or better yet, put it in a bag or shower cap) before using it, as it generally isn’t cleaned in between guests.

Jettison Any Decorative Items From the Bed

It’s a mystery to us why hotels insist on putting decorative throw pillows on beds (that clearly can’t be washed). Make sure your sleeping surface stays clean by removing anything that isn’t obviously laundered when the room is cleaned—including throw pillows and bedspreads.

Wash Your Hands

You’ve just come from a plane, public transportation, or road trip with rest stops—washing your hands as soon as you arrive in your own private bathroom is a smart move.

Traveling not only comes with the actual monetary cost, but there are other costs to figure in when planning a vacation, and more and more, travelers are starting to consider the environmental impact of their travels. Whether through eco-tourism, choosing sustainable hotels, or just practicing more environmentally friendly practices, it’s at the forefront of many people’s minds. Transportation can be one of the most damaging environmental factors when traveling, whether by car, train, boat, or airplane. Trains are the most sustainable travel method, and boats are the worst, contrary to what most people believe.

While flying may be better than taking a cruise, there is still a negative impact on the environment, so choosing an airline that is working towards being more sustainable is key to doing your part in helping the environment.

When deciding which airlines to fly and what makes them sustainable, there are a few factors to consider.

Operational Factors

  • Fuel Efficiency: This includes aircraft type, engine technology, and operational optimization (e.g., flight routes, air traffic management).
  • Emissions Reduction: Focus on reducing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and other pollutants emitted by aircraft.
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Adoption and use of biofuels or synthetic fuels to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Fleet Modernization: Investing in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft models.
  • Weight Reduction: Reducing aircraft weight through material innovation and optimized cargo loads.

Environmental Management

  • Carbon Offsetting: Implementing programs to compensate for carbon emissions through investments in renewable energy or reforestation projects.
  • Waste Management: Effective waste reduction, recycling, and disposal practices.
  • Noise Pollution: Minimizing aircraft noise impact on communities.
  • Water Conservation: Efficient water usage in airline operations.
  • Biodiversity: Protecting ecosystems and wildlife through responsible operations.

Corporate and Social Responsibility

  • Transparency: Openly reporting environmental performance and setting clear sustainability goals.
  • Employee Engagement: Involving employees in sustainability initiatives.
  • Supply Chain Sustainability: Ensuring suppliers adhere to environmental standards.
  • Community Involvement: Supporting local communities and environmental projects.

Certifications and Standards

  • Adherence to International Standards: Complying with regulations and industry standards for environmental performance.
  • Seeking Certifications: Obtaining certifications like ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) to demonstrate commitment.
  • CDP Score: The CDP, Carbon Disclosure Project, issues airlines a score which, According to Ecometria, is a rating system that assesses  “the performance of a diverse range of companies and cities looking specifically at how they manage their environmental impact, which includes their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”

Major US Airlines have committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, but until then, here are the most sustainable airlines.

United Airlines

According to CEO Scott Kirby, United has embraced “a new goal to be 100% green by 2050 by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions 100%.” They are well on their way to reach this goal, implementing several sustainable practices, including the purchase of 100 30-passenger hybrid-electric planes. They also focus on reducing jet fuel consumption through initiatives like increased use of sustainable aviation fuels and operational efficiencies. Beyond emissions, United is committed to a holistic approach, integrating sustainability into every aspect of their business, from ground operations to customer experiences. Recognizing the industry-wide challenge, they are actively collaborating with partners to drive change and invest in innovative solutions. United’s progress is evident in their industry-leading CDP score and validated sustainability targets, demonstrating their commitment to a more sustainable future for aviation.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has solidified its position as a sustainability leader in the airline industry. The carrier has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact through a multifaceted approach. By setting ambitious climate goals, including a net-zero carbon emissions target by 2040, Alaska Airlines demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability. Their focus on fuel efficiency has contributed to lower emissions through operating a fuel-efficient fleet and optimized flight paths. Additionally, the airline’s proactive stance on sustainable aviation fuels and its efforts to reduce plastic waste onboard showcase its dedication to environmental stewardship. Alaska Airlines’ commitment to transparency and accountability further solidifies its reputation as a responsible corporate citizen.

SAS

SAS Scandinavian Airlines has proven itself dedicated to sustainable aviation through a combination of strategic initiatives. The airline has made significant strides by prioritizing using sustainable aviation fuel, a key factor in reducing emissions. With a focus on fleet modernization, SAS has invested in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft to lower its environmental impact. Additionally, the airline’s commitment to operational efficiency, including optimized flight routes and weight reduction, contributes to its overall sustainability performance. SAS’s transparency regarding its sustainability efforts and active participation in industry initiatives solidifies its position as a responsible corporate citizen.

KLM

KLM is a leader in sustainable air travel and continues to improve its fleet, use sustainable practices, and do its part in helping the environment recover from damage. KLM has begun using 1% SAF in every flight out of Amsterdam and aims to make that 10% by 2030. They also support three nature regeneration projects to  “help ecosystems recover from harmful human activity.” They are also constantly improving sustainability onboard through reducing weight, conscious meal choices, and recycling.

Lufthansa

In 2024, Lufthansa received top rating from the CDP, receiving an A-. The Lufthansa Group is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To reach this ambitious goal, they aim to halve their net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. Their strategies include modernizing their fleet, increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuel, optimizing flight operations, and offering sustainable travel options to customers. The group also supports climate research and has received validation for its climate targets from the Science-Based Targets Initiative.

Japan ANA

Japan ANA received the only A from the CDP, making it the leading airline in sustainability for 2024. ANA has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact through several key initiatives. It has been at the forefront of adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), investing heavily in its production and usage. Additionally, the airline has focused on operational efficiency, including optimizing flight paths and reducing aircraft weight. ANA has also been transparent about its sustainability goals and progress, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.

Factors to Consider When Flying

While choosing a more environmentally-conscious airline helps, there are a lot of things you can do to help as well. Here are some ways you can be more responsible when flying:

Choose direct flights: Take-offs and landings are the most fuel-intensive parts of a flight. Direct flights (nonstop) can reduce emissions.

Pack light: A lighter aircraft burns less fuel. Pack efficiently to minimize luggage weight.

Deciding on a Cape Cod hotel can be tough. Do you want a sprawling resort or a quaint escape? Pelham on Earle combines the best of both worlds, offering a quiet boutique experience along with access to the amenities at the larger Pelham House Resort down the street.

Photo for the Pelham on Earle Hotel Outside

This recently renovated hotel offers a low-key coastal retreat in the charming town of West Harwich, Massachusetts. Leave the highway behind, turn down quiet Earle Street, and just before the street dead-ends at the beach, you’ll find Pelham on Earle. The property consists of 27 ground-level hotel rooms facing out into a lush courtyard bursting with hydrangeas. You’ll find a pool, lawn games, and plenty of places to lounge out here.

The Location

Set on a quiet residential street less than a block from Earle Road Beach, Pelham on Earle enjoys a serene location. If you want to experience a quintessential Cape Cod beach town on your vacation, the livelier village of Harwich Port is less than a five-minute drive away, where you’ll find plenty of small shops and eateries to explore.

The hotel is a short bike ride to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a 25-mile off-street paved path that’s a delight to cycle in the summer.

Dining

Pelham on Earle's Restaurant, Tides Kitchen and Bar, indoor/outdoor

Pelham on Earle has one restaurant, Tides Kitchen & Bar, that is open daily for lunch and dinner. This intimate, airy eatery serves a tightly curated Mexican-inspired menu of tacos, nachos, and quesadillas, along with classic Cape Cod staples such as lobster rolls and local oysters.

The drinks are innovative and refreshing. Standout favorites included the Shipwrecked Margarita, made with tequila, Bauchant, fresh lime, and agave and topped with a Grand Marnier floater, and the Hydrangea Nectar, crafted with Gray Whale gin, lemon juice, and butterfly pea flower simple syrup.

Food Spread from Pelham on Earle's Restaurant, Tides Kitchen and Bar

Guests can also take the hotel’s free shuttle to Pelham House Resort and dine at The Rooftop or Pool House. Be sure to make an advance reservation to snag a table at The Rooftop, a beautiful glass-enclosed, heated deck popular with tourists and locals alike for its stunning ocean views. Come for dinner at sunset, where you’ll enjoy gorgeous scenery against a backdrop of live music.

The Pool House is a great spot for lunch. It is located next to the heated, saltwater pool overlooking the ocean, and you can dine next to the water while in the pool (or relaxing next to it).

The Rooms

Pelham on Earle’s rooms are all on the ground level, with walkout access to the pool and restaurant. Each room has an Adirondack-style loveseat for guests to enjoy some private space outside.

Pelham on Earle - Accommodation

I stayed in a Pelham King Room with Fireplace, a spacious room with cathedral ceilings. Air conditioning and a ceiling fan kept the room cool despite the summer heat, but there’s also a gas fireplace to make things cozy if nights get chilly. The room was fully stocked with a microwave, minifridge, and Keurig coffee maker.

Amenities

Earle Road Beach is just steps away from the property and offers plenty of space to sunbathe or frolic in the waves. As a thoughtful touch, all rooms at Pelham on Earle are stocked with a wagon filled with beach essentials, including chairs and towels.

Aerial view of the Pelham on Earle

If you’d prefer a quieter beach, guests of Pelham on Earle can take a free shuttle to the larger Pelham House Resort (located a few minutes’ drive away) and utilize the private beach there from 11 am Sundays through 3 pm on Fridays.

Other amenities include:

Summertime is here, and so is the hot weather. If you’re like me, you do everything you can to avoid the heat – my summer vacation destination of choice is Canada, and there are plenty of other cooler destinations you can visit to beat the heat. Coolcations are here to stay; we’ve found the top places to head to this year to keep cool.

What Makes a Coolcation?

A “coolcation” is a summer getaway that offers relief from the heat. Areas that are considered coolcations can have a few factors attributed to them; some have more than others, but all have at least one:

Galyna Andrushko | Adobe Stock
  • High altitude – A higher altitude usually means cooler temperatures, even in peak summer months.
  • Proximity to water – Cooler temperatures occur thanks to the sea breeze effect
  • Lush greenery – Your coolcation will not happen in a barren desert. Places with lush greenery that rarely experience drought are perfect for a cooler climate.
  • Opportunities for water-based activities – Cooling off in the water is critical to staying cool, so your coolcation will likely include plenty of water activities.
  • Low temperatures – A coolcation destination won’t have temperatures above 75 degrees in the summer, making the weather pleasant and bearable even in the height of summer.

Top Coolcation Destinations

North America

Charming towns like Banff, Lake Louise, and Canmore provide all the amenities you need to enjoy your stay. Be sure to try the gondola ride in Lake Louise!

We’ve all heard the line, “I need a vacation from my vacation.” Vacations can be tiring: going from one attraction to another, walking more than you typically do in a day, and making sure you fit in everything you want to do during the week or so you have at your destination. This traditional way of vacationing is changing, and “slowcations” are becoming increasingly popular.

What is a Slowcation?

What exactly is a slowcation? According to the vacation rental website Offbeat Stays, a slowcation is “a travel niche that focuses more on building a connection with the destination – the local people, culinary delights, rich culture, folk music, and much more. An exquisite indulgence.” It is a type of vacation that emphasizes relaxation and immersing yourself in a place rather than rushing around to see all the sights. It’s about slowing down, disconnecting from the busyness of everyday life, and truly experiencing a destination.

The key components of a slowcation are:

  • Relaxation – Unlike traditional vacations packed with activities, a slowcation is about taking things at your own pace and prioritizing rest and rejuvenation.
  • Connection – Slowcations encourage connecting with the local culture, people, and food.
  • Mindfulness – Instead of ticking things off a list, you savor the experience of each activity. This could involve spending hours at a museum, lingering over a long lunch, or simply soaking up the atmosphere in a beautiful setting.

Who Should Take a Slowcation?

Everyone can benefit from a slowcation, but you need to be ready for it. People feeling burnt out, anyone wanting to truly learn about a different culture, nature lovers, and really, anyone who just wants to sit, relax, and take it all in without a strict agenda. You’ll focus on relaxation, mindful experiences and fully immersing yourself in local, authentic experiences.

Tips for Taking the Perfect Slowcation

The point of a slowcation is to slow down and destress. To make the most of your slowcation, you need to pack smart, choose the right activities and the right destination.

Pack Smart

A slowcation is all about enjoying the simple parts of a destination, and with that comes packing simply too. We’ve created a packing list to help you with your journey.

lithiumphoto | Adobe Stock

Some basic tips are:

  • Minimize footwear; just one or two pairs of comfortable shoes should suffice.
  • Embrace layers- packing clothes that can be layered will allow for adapting to changing weather.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen!

Choose the Right Activities

Remember: you want a slower-paced vacation when going on a slowcation. Don’t jampack your day with a rigid itinerary. Choose activities that allow you to live in the moment and take it all in.

Choose activities that are tailored to relaxation, like yoga, spa treatments, and sitting on the beach. The best slowcation activities promote mindfulness and present-moment awareness. Choosing activities that resonate with you can lead to deeper connections with the local culture, nature, and yourself. Avoid over-stimulation, too. Tourist traps are usually loud and crowded, overstimulating your senses. This is why quieter, less popular spots are important when planning activities.

Choosing the Right Destination

The destination is probably the most important part of planning a slowcation. Cities are not the best idea when you want to take a slowcation. Find quieter, slower spots that focus on nature and local customs.

Best Slowcation Destinations

Luckily, several spots throughout the world will create the perfect slowcation for your next trip. Whether traveling afar or staying closer to home, the right destination for you is out there. Whether it’s a yoga retreat, jungle adventure, or local food tour, here are the best places to take your slowcation.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I visited Hot Springs in Arkansas. I knew it was a national park, and there were hot springs (duh). I was looking forward to a bathhouse experience, but other than that, my knowledge was limited. Arkansas wasn’t exactly on my radar for vacations, but I think Hot Springs should be on everyone’s list of places to visit. Not only does it have a national park, but it boasts a rich history complete with gangsters, baseball, and Hollywood, and it was the town where President Bill Clinton grew up.  The surrounding area provides several activities to fill your visit, from stunning gardens to quartz mines. Whether you are heading there for a quick couples getaway or a family vacation, it has something for everyone.

Getting to Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs is located in central Arkansas, nestled within Garland County. The Ouachita Mountains form a scenic backdrop to the city, and Hot Springs National Park sits right north of the city limits.

Getting there By Car

Hot Springs is easily accessible by car from many major cities in the region, with several major highways leading into the city.

Approximate travel times by car include:

  • Little Rock – 50 minutes
  • Memphis – 2 hours
  • Shreveport, LA – 3 hours
  • Dallas – 4.5 hours
  • Nashville – 6 hours
  • New Orleans – 7 hours
  • Atlanta – 8 Hours

Flying to Hot Springs

The Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT) is the closest major airport to Hot Springs. It is located about an hour’s drive from the city. Several major airlines offer service to Little Rock, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. While there is a small regional airport in Hot Springs (HOT), it is smaller and has limited commercial service. Southern Airways Express is the only airline currently serving HOT, with daily nonstop flights to/from Dallas and Memphis.

Taking a Train to Hot Springs

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle route does not stop directly in Hot Springs. However, it does stop in Malvern, Arkansas, about 20 miles north of Hot Springs. From Malvern, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to Hot Springs.

Where to Stay in Hot Springs

Thanks to its status as a resort town and vacation destination, there are several accommodations to choose from in Hot Springs, from luxury to budget and even more unique.

Budget Choice – Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court

Cottage Court
Expedia

A traditional “motor lodge,” Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court was recently renovated to create a chic, retro, affordable motel. You won’t have a ton of space, but the space you do have is clean and efficient. Rooms range from deluxe King to petite Queen and have a coffee machine, TV, and WiFi. Located close to downtown, it’s convenient for your Hot Springs stay.

Traditional Bed and Breakfast Choice – Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast

Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast
Expedia

This upscale bed and breakfast provides a comfortable stay just minutes from the national park. Cozy up after a day at the bathhouse by a gas fireplace, or enjoy a soak in your private jacuzzi. There is off-street parking, coffee, tea, water, and soda are complimentary, and you’ll love the large daily breakfast served.

Unique Choice – In the Trees

The Woodcutter Cabin
Expedia

This tree-house mountain resort features private hot tubs and decks among the trees, full kitchens, fire pits, and more- all within the tops of the trees in the Ouachita Mountains. There are hiking trails on-site, as well as access to the Northwoods mountain biking trails, and e-bikes are available to rent.

Best for Couples – Lookout Point Lakeside Inn

Lookout Point Lakeside Inn
Expedia

This Inn is outside the center of Hot Springs and offers a secluded, boutique stay. With just twelve rooms and the amenities of a large full-service hotel, it’s the perfect place to stay for couples. A two-course breakfast is included with your stay, as are non-motorized watercraft, perfect for use on Lake Hamilton, from the Inn’s private dock. Each room has a deck or terrace overlooking the lake, and three of the rooms are pet-friendly.

Historic Choice – The Arlington

Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa
Expedia

You will step into history with a stay at the Arlington- Al Capone used to rent out the entire fourth floor when he stayed here, and reportedly, the hat shop in the hotel offered access to an underground tunnel that brought him across the street without being seen. Currently undergoing renovations, it offers suites and regular hotel rooms. There is an onsite restaurant, bar, and spa. All of this is just steps away from the National Park and downtown Hot Springs.

Things to Do in Hot Springs

Hot Springs is more than just a National Park- and while that is certainly a must-see, there are a variety of other attractions for every interest.

Hot Springs National Park

The smallest National Park in the country, Hot Springs National Park, is unique in its shape, as it has a city in the middle of it, making it an O shape. Despite being only 5550 acres, there are several hiking trails, biking, fishing, and forty-seven hot springs to explore. There is one campground, one hotel within the national park, and the country’s only brewery within a national park, Superior Brewing, located in an old bath house.

Two bathhouses are still in operation, both located in the national park- Quapaw and Buckstaff. Buckstaff offers a traditional bathhouse experience, while Quapaw has thermal pools and private baths as well as modern spa treatments. Whittington Park Trail and The Grand Promenade are fully accessible.

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Garvan Woodland Gardens
garvangardens.org

Garvan Woodland Gardens are 210 acres of gorgeous woods and gardens dotted with stunning architecture to blend in with the trees. These include the Anthony Chapel, a stunning structure designed by Maurice Jennings and David McKee, and an awe-inspiring four-level treehouse built in 2018. Kids will love exploring and climbing, and adults can savor the wildflowers and soak in the lake on a four-and-a-half-mile boardwalk. Several trails around the gardens are ADA-compliant, making them accessible to all.

Mine for Crystals at Avant Mining

Full disclosure: I did this activity, and I thought that I would need a hard hat and be riding in a mining train- the entire time I was digging, I was singing “Dig Dig Dig” from Snow White- it is NOT like that at all. Check-in at the entrance and get tools to help you dig for mines. The talented workers of the mine have already loosened the earth so you can dig for mines, so the hardest work is already done. They offer different packages, from $25/day for public mining or anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000/day for private digging. You can expect to find crystals that match the amount that you pay.

Spend the Day on A Lake

Ouachita Kayak Tours
Ouachita Kayak Tours | Facebook

The three main lakes in Hot Springs – Lake Hamilton, Lake Ouachita, and Lake Catherine, all offer adventure-filled activities for those looking for a more active day. You can rent a boat, go on a guided kayak tour, fish, or simply wade or take a swim.

Where to Eat in Hot Springs

Hot Springs has a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars to choose from during your visit.

Best for a Beer – Superior Bathhouse Brewing

Superior Bath House Brewery
superiorbathhouse.com

The only brewery within any national park, Superior Batthouse has a pub-like menu and an extensive beer list – all brewed right in the backroom of the former superior bathhouse. Beers include a chocolate graham cracker porter, a hazy IPA, and, for non-beer drinkers, a ginger seltzer. The patio is large and features a smaller menu than indoors, but just as delicious.

Best for Lunch – Kollective Coffee and Tea

Enjoy organic, local, and fresh products at Kollective Coffee and Tea. Try a “grown-up grilled cheese,” detox salad, or a special like a falafel wrap (which was the special the day I was there and was absolutely amazing). You can’t miss their homemade hummus, either. Wash it all down with a pour-over coffee or organic tea.

Best Pizza – DeLuca

Enjoy a piece of New York City in Hot Springs. Owner Anthony Valinoti found himself in Europe after his parents died within days of each other to try to reset, and it was during his stay in Italy that he realized traditional pizza was his calling. He learned how to cook from his Italian host, and then DeLuca’s Pizzeria was born. Enjoy delicious pizza, salads, and drinks.

Best Breakfast – Best Cafe

Part of the Historic Best Court hotel (where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio stayed when visiting Hot Springs), Best Cafe offers creme brulee French toast, a whipped yogurt bowl, Confit Pork Belly Skillet Hash, creamy gouda grits, and much, much more. It is open to the public, not just to guests staying at the hotel.

Best Traditional Experience – Pancake Shop

A Hot Springs staple since 1940, the Pancake Shop delivers a traditional dining experience, complete with bottomless cups of coffee served in a simple ceramic mug. Choose from buttermilk, apple, banana, chocolate chip, and buckwheat pancakes, eggs, cereals, breakfast meats, and juices. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the menu is strictly breakfast.

Best for Live Music – The Ohio Club

Arkansas’ oldest bar, the Ohio Club, was a speakeasy during prohibition, turning its facade to the Ohio Cigar Club, and those in the know knew to go to the back to gain entrance to the bar.  Post-prohibition, It is said to have been frequented by notorious gangsters like Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel, and Lucky Luciano, as well as local legends and major league baseball players who trained in Hot Springs during the early 1900s. Mae West performed here in the mid-1930s.  The club features live music seven nights a week, focusing on blues, jazz, and classic rock.

The W Scottsdale blends the W’s signature cheeky style with a touch of local Southwest flair, creating a sophisticated stay in the heart of Old Town. Recently renovated, the property features 241 guest rooms, including 44 lavish suites, all outfitted with the latest high-tech amenities.

Like most W hotels, the atmosphere at this Scottsdale outpost is undeniably trendy and upscale. During the week, the hotel offers a relaxing base from which guests can explore downtown’s lively shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. However, come the weekend, the W Scottsdale transforms into the destination itself, with its infamous adults-only parties taking over the WET Deck outdoor pool.

Whether you’re seeking a convenient home base for discovering Scottsdale or a raucous party scene, the W strikes the perfect balance of metropolitan sophistication and Southwest charm. With its chic design, high-end amenities, and lively social calendar, this is the place to see and be seen in Scottsdale.

The Location

W Scottsdale

With a prime location in Scottsdale’s charming Old Town area, the W Scottsdale is within easy walking distance to an array of art, shopping, and nightlife that make up the city’s buzzing Entertainment District. Tempe is just 15 minutes away, and Phoenix is accessible within 25 minutes.

Just outside the door, you’ll find the Arizona Canal path, a nearly 70-mile multi-use path perfect for jogging or biking. Grab one of the hotel’s bikes and enjoy a breezy ride along the scenic waterfront.

During my visit, I dropped my car off at the valet as soon as I drove in from the airport, and I didn’t need it again until it was time to leave because everything is so close to the hotel.

Dining

The W Scottsdale’s main restaurant, Donabe, is a Japanese steakhouse serving sushi, seafood, and Wagyu atop the hotel’s Wet Deck. Donabe is open for a more casual breakfast and lunch before transitioning into a vibey nighttime scene at dinner. The business casual or “date night” attire dress code is enforced in the evening.

Next to Donabe, you’ll find Cottontail Cafe & Louge, a small nook offering craft cocktails and small bites with pool views.

Down on the W Scottsdale’s first floor, you’ll find the Living Room Lounge (the lobby bar) and Sips on Social (an outdoor patio), where you can drink and mingle with locals and other guests.

The Pool

W Scottsdale

The W Scottsdale’s lively social scene centers around its expansive second-floor pool area. Although the Wet Deck entices guests all week, the party atmosphere heats up on the weekends, when the 21-and-up crowd gathers for high-energy DJ sets and bottle service. Whether unwinding in a private cabana or dancing the night away, the W Scottsdale delivers a quintessential desert oasis experience.

Guests looking to be treated like VIPs can rent one of the private cabanas lining the pool’s perimeter. These luxurious enclaves come equipped with flat-screen TVs, personal attendant service, and perhaps the most important feature during a Scottsdale summer—shade.

The pool is located on the hotel’s second floor, and you can get a sneak peek when you check in by simply looking up—the glass portholes give a glimpse into the pool from below.

The Rooms

The spacious guest rooms at the W Scottsdale exude the brand’s signature sassy style, blending a muted, somewhat retro aesthetic with vibrant pops of color. Playful paintings of martinis and rabbits adorn the walls, complementing the natural wood tones and clean lines of the decor.

I stayed in the W Scottsdale’s Wow Suite, a two-bedroom apartment-style accommodation that truly lived up to its name. Both bedrooms featured plush W Signature king beds, walk-in closets, and ensuite bathrooms stocked with Davines toiletries, Frette slippers, and cozy robes.

In addition to the bedrooms, the 1,500-square-foot Wow Suite boasts a full kitchen, dining area, half bath, separate living room, and private balcony overlooking the pool and Camelback Mountain. For extended stays, the in-suite laundry room with a washer and dryer was a nice convenience.

The Spa

W Scottsdale

After a lively day or night exploring Scottsdale, guests can retreat to the AWAY Spa at the W Scottsdale, the city’s premier wellness and beauty destination. Whether recovering from one of the hotel’s renowned pool parties or preparing for an evening out on the town, the spa’s expert practitioners are on hand to provide the perfect pampering experience.

For post-party rejuvenation, a detox massage paired with a CBD balm enhancement can work wonders. And for those looking to amp up the glamour before a night on the town, the spa’s makeup and lash application offerings can help you get photo-ready.

Price and How to Book

Rooms at The W Scottsdale start at around $195 and can be booked on Expedia

Overpacking is the quickest way to start your European trip off on the wrong foot. Charming cobblestone streets, boutique hotels without elevators, and packed public transportation mean you don’t want to be hauling around an oversized suitcase.

A streamlined European packing list is essential—you want to look good in all your photos in front of famous sites, blend in with local fashion, and be comfortable for miles of walking every day.

We’ve put together the ultimate European summer packing list for smarter travelers to follow—you’ll be comfortable, stylish, and mobile (without that giant checked bag).

Clothing

Jeans

Summer weather in Europe can be fickle, so packing a good pair of jeans is always smart in case the temperatures drop in the evening. Mott & Bow’s Slim Boyfriend Jeans are made from a soft, lightweight twill denim fabric that’s lighter and more comfortable than regular denim.

The white jeans help keep your outfit looking summery, and by some miracle, Mott & Bow’s jeans aren’t see-through like most white pants.

Light Shirt/Scarf

If you’re visiting any religious/historical sites in Europe, you may be asked to cover your shoulders and knees out of respect. Keep a lightweight scarf with you so you can comply on an impromptu visit without overheating during the rest of the day.

Dresses

Dresses are the most versatile piece of clothing you can pack for your European trip, as they can be worn with sneakers during the day or made fancier at night with heels. For hot summers, you can’t beat linen—Quince’s 100 percent European Linen Button Front Dress was practically designed for European trips.

Made from breathable and heat-regulating linen, the dress will keep you cool. The removable belt and functional buttons give you multiple looks with just one piece of clothing and best of all, the dress features pockets.

Tops

Cozy Earth’s Coastal Comfort Mock Neck Short Sleeve Button Down is the perfect mix of casual and pulled-together. Made from a blend of tencel and linen, this top is ultra-breathable and feels significantly cooler than cotton.

The fabric uses an enhanced weave that helps prevent pilling, so this shirt will still look brand-new after many trips.

Swimsuit

Since they take up such minimal space, you’ll never regret packing a swimsuit. There are so many beaches, lakes, and even hotel pools to explore in Europe, you won’t want to miss any opportunity for a dip.

If you tend to burn easily, and don’t want to be bothered frequently getting out of the water to reapply, the Eddie Bauer Long-Sleeve One Piece Swimsuit swimsuit is a great option—the floral print and zipper keep it cute, while the extra coverage gives you plenty of sun protection.

Lightweight Pants

A lightweight pair of pants can protect you from the sun, keep you covered for historical church visits, and help you look like a local (if you choose the right ones). Ditch the heavy denim in favor of something with a bit more stretch, like Mott & Bow’s Twill Chinos

These pants have just the right of flexibility but are structured enough that they won’t get baggy halfway through your trip. The khaki color is perfect for summer, and can be dressed up or down depending on your plans for the day.

Accessories

Crossbody Purse

The perfect purse for Europe can be worn crossbody style (which makes it harder to steal), goes with any outfit, is versatile, and is big enough to hold the essentials (but not too large, since you’ll be carrying it all day).

Quince’s Italian Leather Quilted Wallet Crossbody ticks all the boxes. Made from soft Italian leather, the purse will be right at home in Europe, and the quilted design works well from day to night. The bag can be worn as a crossbody, or you can remove the chain to use it as a clutch.

Coin Purse

Coin purses have fallen out of fashion in the US, but they can come in handy in Europe, where lower denominations of currency are in coins instead of bills. Don’t end up with a heavy stash of coins buried in your bag—keep your change organized and accessible in a zippered pouch

Hat

Keep the sun off of your face and your outfit looking stylish with a sun hat. These packable options from Madewell are perfect, since they can be stuffed in your bag (without getting destroyed) when you’re not wearing them.

Refillable Water Bottle

Although tap water is safe to drink in Europe, it’s not commonly offered for free at restaurants (you’ll likely have a choice of bottled still or sparkling water instead). However, in some destinations, you may find public drinking fountains readily available. Save money (and the environment) by packing your own reusable water bottle, like this one from LARQ, which automatically cleans itself using UV technology.

The LARQ bottle comes in both an insulated and non-insulated version, so you can choose between having a light weight to carry or having perfectly chilled beverages all day long.

Footwear

Sandals

Pack a pair of sandals you can wear to the beach, hotel pool, and for short walks. Ipanema’s Trendy Sandals feature a minimalist style that will blend in anywhere. The lightweight sandals are made from PVC so they can be easily rinsed off after every wear.

Sneakers

You’ll spot chunky white sneakers on the feet of many stylish Europeans this summer. Join the crowd with New Balance’s classic 550 sneakers. The low top and clean silhouette go with everything from jeans to dresses, and there’s plenty of arch support and cushioning to keep you comfortable.

Socks

Pack no-show socks that will actually stay up if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. These ones from Bombas have grips on the heel that help to keep them in place.

Toiletries/Miscellaneous

In addition to the same toiletries you’d pack for any destination (toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, etc.) here are some important ones to remember for Europe:

Sunscreen

Even if you’re not hitting the beach in Europe, sunscreen is still a must-pack for summer trips. Sun Bum smells good and doesn’t leave a white cast, so you’ll forget you’re wearing it.

Tissues

A travel-sized pack of tissues can come in handy for more than just the sniffles (like at a public bathroom that’s run out of toilet paper.)

Medications

In some European destinations, you’ll have to visit an actual pharmacy to purchase even over-the-counter medications, and these pharmacies tend to have somewhat limited hours.

Pack sample-size packets of medicines just in case, so you don’t have to waste time hunting down a pharmacy if you have a headache or stomachache.

Electronics

oatawa | Adobe Stock

Headphones

Don’t forget to pack a pair of headphones for the long flight over from the United States. Skullcandy’s Push Active Earbuds are wireless but still secure (in case you plan on working out while you’re on vacation).

The earbuds are voice-controlled, so you don’t have to stop what you’re doing to change songs or take a phone call.

Adapter

Appliances in Europe run on 220 volts, while ones in America use 110 volts. Fortunately, most modern appliances (like iPhones) automatically switch voltage, so you won’t need to worry about bringing an electricity converter (but double-check your electronics before trying to use them abroad).

However, you will need to pack an adapter in order to use standard plugs in Europe.

Portable Charger

It’s easy to run down the battery on your phone when you’re snapping pictures and taking video to capture all the memories—and constantly using maps to figure out directions. A portable charger can revive your battery without you having to go back to the hotel or find a place to plug it in.

Travel Documents

As with any trip, don’t forget these important travel documents:

  • Passport
  • Copies of passport (you can scan them to your phone or the cloud instead of carrying paper)

Money

Although most places in Europe accept credit cards, you’re still likely to find a few cash-only destinations, so make sure you bring some cash with you.

When you are using a credit card, make sure you’re choosing one that doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee, as those can quickly add up.
