Traveling is hard enough. Don’t make it worse by wearing the wrong thing and being uncomfortable throughout your trip. You want to be dry, comfortable, and at a good temperature from the minute you leave your hotel in the morning until you crash at night. Here’s how to effectively layer from head to toe on any kind of fall trip to ensure your wardrobe preforms the way you need it to all day long.

What Fabrics Are Best for Fall Layering?

mashiki | Adobe Stock

Even more important than picking the right cut or style, choosing the right fabric for your fall travel wardrobe will set you up for layering success. Your summer linens and thin cottons will still have their place on your fall packing list, but the real heroes of the season will be fabrics that are insulating and lightweight, like cashmere and thermal knits, as well as heartier cold-weather staples like wool and denim.

Cashmere

Up to eight times warmer than traditional wool, cashmere is ideal for an autumn trip. However, this luxury textile is a known budget breaker. The heightened cost stems from the time- and labor-intensive process of creating cashmere, requiring wool from several cashmere goats to craft even a single garment. If you’d like to try cashmere, avoid some of the sweater-induced sticker shock by browsing the affordable options at Quince

Merino Wool

Merino wool offers an affordable but high-quality alternative to its cashmere cousin. Made from merino sheep wool, this fabric is anti-static, smooth and cool to the touch, and highly insulating despite its light weight.

Wool

Standard wool is still a tried-and-true staple of the season. It’s naturally insulating and more common than the specialty wools listed above, making it more affordable overall. To keep your wool cozy and warm (instead of unbearably itchy), wash with a wool detergent and hang to dry.

Thermal Knit

Also called waffle knit, thermal knits get their insulating qualities by trapping air warmed by the body in the tiny cells created by its grid-like weave. Thermal knits are frequently wrinkle-resistant, meaning they’ll emerge from your suitcase ready to wear.

Denim

Originally developed as fabric for durable workwear, denim is now a feature of nearly everyone’s closet. A quality sturdy denim is an ideal outer layer for fall, easy to pair with a variety of other fabrics, and able to withstand the fickle autumn weather.

Corduroy

A perennially popular fall pick, corduroy is one of the few fabrics for pants that is both warm and fashionable. Slightly dressier than denim, it is also typically available in iconic autumnal colors.

Specialty Fabrics

There are a variety of other specialized fabrics meant to keep wearers warm. The HEATTECH linen from Uniqlo offers shirts, sweaters, socks, and leggings in its titular ultra-thin but ultra-warm fabric. Thinsulate, found most often in thin down-alternative jackets, is a hypoallergenic insulating material that provides warmth without bulk. Plant-based cotton alternative Tencel is eco-friendly and moisture-wicking, perfect for wear beneath heavier outer layers in the fall. Check the product details of your potential purchases for information on any specialized or branded materials they may contain.

How to Layer for Fall Travel: Fashion Rules to Follow

qunica.com | Adobe Stock

Thoughtful layering will keep you warm and stylish on your travels. When crafting your outfit itinerary, keep a few golden layering rules in mind.

  1. Layer light to heavy. Your tightest, lightest layers should go first, followed by your heavier, warmer layers.
  2. Layer short to long. Your outer layers should be the same length or longer than your inner layers.
  3. Layer tight to loose. Your outermost layers should allow plenty of room for your inner layers to maintain comfort and freedom of motion. Opt for wide-leg pants and consider sizing up in sweaters.
  4. Experiment with silhouettes. Mix and match silhouettes and textures to add some dimension to your outfits. Add a turtleneck underneath a crew-neck sweater, or try a houndstooth coat over a smooth merino cardigan. This will add interesting depth as well as functional warmth to your ensemble.

Best Items to Layer for Fall Travel

Here are a few closet staples to help you elevate your autumn layering game.

Shirts: You don’t have to leave your T-shirts behind in summer. A plain long or short sleeve made from 100% cotton or Tencel fabric makes a great first layer, especially in the early warmer days of autumn.

Sweaters: Sweaters are the cornerstone of every fall wardrobe. Tighter options like a rib-knit turtleneck are the perfect first layer, while looser silhouettes, like this loose V-neck from Old Navy, or bulkier cable knit options can easily be layered on top.

Cardigans: While cardigans fall definitively within the sweater category, they deserve their own shoutout. The humble cardigan‘s convenient front closure makes it an ideal second layer, easy to add or remove. For extra drama, try layering a duster cardigan beneath a long-line coat.

Vests: Puffer vests, like this Wonder Puff Cropped Vest from Lululmeon, keep your core warm while letting your arms have a bit more mobility than a coat or jacket. While fashion vests, like sweater vests or wool suit vests, won’t do much in the way of warmth, they will lend interesting visual depth to all your fall looks.

Jackets: A stylish denim jacket provides light warmth for early fall days. As the weather turns colder, transition to a lined jacket. The Astrid Lined Jacket from Kuhl is a medium crop and comes in three cozy colors.

Coats: If traveling to a chillier destination, you’ll need a heavier coat. This could mean a fully insulated winter jacket, like this thin but ultra-warm coat from Cotopaxi, or a more upscale option, like an ever-stylish peacoat. To maximize layering potential, try a three-in-1 jacket like this one from REI which provides a base, mid, and outer layer in a single coat. Finally, don’t forget a raincoat for those rainy autumn days—Everlane has styles in men’s and women’s sizes.

Tights: A good pair of tights will extend the life of your summer skirts well into autumn and can be used as a base layer underneath clothes as it nears winter. Opt for tights designed to trap heat, like the HEATTECH Knit Tights from UNIQLO, rather than standard nylons. If you prefer sheer tights, fleece-lined tights mimic the look of nylons while still keeping you warm.

Undershirts: Similarly to tights, adding an undershirt base layer will boost the warmth of any outfit. The HEATTECH innerwear line has several options. You could also throw on a classic thermal knit, suitable under clothes or as a standalone shirt.

Hats: You can’t go wrong with a classic beanie. The Cozy Hour Beanie from Athleta is a stylish option that comes in eight colors. For an equally warm twist on the classic stocking hat, try the Mongolian Cashmere Beret from Quince. If your favorite fall hat doesn’t provide much protection against the elements, try layering it with a thin pair of earmuffs or an ear-warming headband. If rain is in the forecast, skip the umbrella or the plastic rain hood and try a stylish waterproof headscarf.

Scarves: A good travel scarf is the best accessory. We recommend a blanket scarf like the Dreamsoft Travel Scarf, which can double as a blanket in chilly airplane cabins.

Gloves: While gloves aren’t always necessary for autumn, it’s good to have a pair on hand for frosty evenings or an unexpected dip in temperature. The Rho Glove from Arc’Teryx are excellent for transitioning from fall into winter. Wear them alone in autumn and layered underneath thicker gloves when the cold weather sets in.

Shoes: Nothing is worse than freezing damp feet while trying to enjoy a day of sightseeing. Your fall footwear should always be water-resistant. For everyday wear, the waterproof (and machine washable!) Vessi Weekend sneakers or the Wexford Waterproof Chelsea Boot from Ariat will do the trick. For active vacations, these waterproof boots from KEEN will keep you warm and dry while you hit the trails.

Socks: Warm socks are a must-have for autumn travel. Classic wool socks will do the trick on dry days. If there’s rain in your vacation forecast, invest in a hearty pair of waterproof socks to layer with your waterproof shoes for double the protection.

How to Layer for an Active Fall Vacation

Layering will look different on the top of a mountain versus the top of the Eiffel Tower. Layering for active travel in autumn becomes trickier, especially if your excursions involve significant elevation changes.

Remember this cardinal rule for hiking as the weather begins to cool down—start cold! If you plan to spend the day on an intensive hike, start with the fewest layers tolerable and add layers as needed. This prevents sweat from building up and later cooling down, potentially lowering your core temperature to a dangerous degree.

For active trips, look for base layers made from durable moisture-wicking fabric, like this long-sleeve merino base layer from REI. Bring along a pair of liner gloves and heavier waterproof gloves for higher elevations. Consider tossing an extra pair of wool socks in your hiking pack in case the first pair gets wet (or sweaty!).

Autumn enthusiasts are constantly on the hunt for that first sign of changing leaves. Fall looks a little different in every part of the country and dedicated leaf peepers don’t want to miss a thing. From golden aspens amidst the Rocky Mountains to classic New England foliage along the East Coast, here are seven destinations where leaf peepers can catch the best fall colors.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The East Coast is an autumnal classic for leaf-peepers and Maine offers the best of the best. While there is plenty to do in the town itself, from museums to ghost tours, it’s the adjacent Acadia National Park where the season truly shines. Hike, drive, or bike the meandering paths and roads criss-crossing the park or take a kayak out on Jordan Pond to take in the foliage reflected on the water.

Where to Stay: Holiday Inn Resort Bar Harbor

The Holiday Inn Resort Bar Harbor is pet-friendly, perfect for hikers looking to have an adventure with their furry friend on one of Acadia’s many pet-friendly hiking trails. The cozy atmosphere of La Bella Vita, the hotel’s in-house Italian eatery and wine bar, will warm you right up after a day of exploration as you enjoy stunning views of Frenchman’s Bay.

Napa, California

Did you know that grape vines change color too? Wine country in autumn is a sight to see, when not only the leaves on the trees but also the sprawling vineyards become drenched in oranges and golds. Take a Napa Valley wine tour to enjoy the foliage (drink in hand), or take to the skies in a hot air balloon to see the seasonal colors from a new perspective.

Where to Stay: Hotel Napa Valley

This Victorian-era boutique hotel exudes the quintessential vibes you want from a foliage excursion. Indulge in a complimentary breakfast served in the property’s wine cellar each morning and then hop in the car to head to one of several scenic wineries less than 20 minutes from the property.

Duluth, Minnesota

Experience lakeside foliage in Duluth, Minnesota, a city situated on the coast of Lake Superior. With 129 city parks and over 300 cumulative miles of trails for everything from hiking and biking to horseback riding and cross-country skiing, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. Visit Duluth suggests setting aside time to go birding, as migratory species can be seen in spades just off Skyline Parkway during the fall season.

Located just off Lake Superior, this property features a number of beautiful outdoor spaces, private balconies, and lakeview rooms, ensuring that you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the autumn scenery even after returning to your hotel.

New York City, New York

Generations of singers have been crooning about autumn in New York and for good reason. Every year, the notoriously fast-paced city comes alive with fall color. Grab a latte and stroll around Central Park to enjoy the crisp air and changing leaves. Make a day trip out to one of the city’s many botanical gardens, located anywhere from Staten Island to the Bronx to Brooklyn.

Where to Stay: The Park West Hotel

Charlottesville provides access to some spectacular foliage spreads in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the town is also an attractive regional destination in itself. Go shopping and grab a meal at the Downtown Mall to enjoy some historic architecture coupled with the fall colors. A drive down the Blueridge Parkway or a day trip to Shenandoah National Park will get you out of the city and into the heart of some of the best foliage in the state.

Where to Stay: The Draftsman Charlottesville

If you’re looking to elevate your seasonal beverage tastes beyond pumpkin spice, this is the city for you. Known for its coffee culture, you can’t go wrong ducking into any of the cafes that dot the city for an autumn pick-me-up while taking in the sites. The Washington Park Arboretum offers visitors the full color palette of the season with a wide range of deciduous trees, from dogwoods to Japanese Maples to towering oaks. Just two hours outside the city you’ll find a riot of fall color at Mount Rainier National Park, where you can leaf peep on horseback on a guided trail ride with Echo River Ranch.

Where to Stay: Hotel Sorrento

Hotel Sorrento is located in the heart of the city with easy access to its most famous attractions and, in line with the often spooky spirit of the season, its own resident ghost. But don’t worry— while most haunted hotels are chilling, you’ll find that this one is pretty chill. Alice Toklas, the inventor of the modern day “special” brownie, is said to roam the fourth floor.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen’s namesake trees put on quite a different show than those in the Northeast and Midwest, washing the town in hues of yellow and gold. The area’s many hiking trails become windows to a new world, surrounding visitors on all sides with towering white trunks and a golden canopy. Don’t miss a photo op with the Maroon Bells—some of the most photographed mountains in the United States—while they’re decked out in their autumn leaves.

The Little Nell is a luxury ski resort nestled in the mountains of Aspen. Guests take advantage of the stunning foliage by joining one of many seasonal activities offered, from off-roading to fly-fishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When did the term leaf peeping start?
A: “Leaf peeping” refers to tourists, also called leaf peepers, who travel to destinations in search of beautiful fall foliage. A surprisingly divisive term, many people think “leaf peeping” is a product of the social media era, but the phrase can be found in print as early as 1966 in a Vermont newspaper.

Q: When should I go leaf peeping?
A: Leaves tend to change earlier in the season the further north and higher above sea level you travel. Peak foliage times can vary even within a single state, especially with inland versus coastal destinations. Many states keep up-to-date foliage maps (predictive maps that show when foliage should be at its peak in different areas), that you can check when planning your fall vacation.

Q: What major US city is the best to see fall foliage?
A: There is no one best US city to see fall foliage. The best city for leaf peeping depends on the timing of your trip, the type of foliage you’d like to see, and the activities you enjoy. If you’re a city-explorer, plan a trip for mid-October to Manhattan. If you’re all about the outdoors, Aspen in September will be a good fit.

Q: What are the different kinds of foliage?
A: Only deciduous trees—your classic oaks and maples, etc.—change color and lose their leaves in the autumn. Coniferous trees—spruce, pine, and other needle-leaved trees—will remain, as their common name implies, evergreen.

Q: How to pronounce foliage?
A: According to Webster’s dictionary: fō-lē-ij (listen below)

Q: Is there still foliage in November?
A: Many places in the United States are past peak by the time November comes around, but you can still catch fall colors in the southernmost areas of the country.

Renewing a US passport is an archaic process. You have to obtain a printed photo, write a check or money order, and then package up all your forms and old passport and go to the post office to mail it—and then cross your fingers that your important and sensitive documents don’t get stolen or lost in the post.

After all that, you then have to wait for the State Department to receive your application (which can take up to two weeks depending on where you mail your package from) before the estimated 8-11 week wait time to process and approve your new passport begins.

Fortunately, the US government has embraced technology and as of this week will allow travelers to renew their passports online. A spokesperson for the State Department told SmarterTravel, “Our new online system will save Americans money, time, and effort, making it much more convenient to renew their passports.”

Who Can Renew a Passport Online?

You can renew your passport online if you meet the following conditions:

  • Renewing a passport that was valid for 10 years
  • Age 25 or older
  • Most recent passport was issued over 9 years ago but less than 15 years ago
  • People who live in the United States

Who Can’t Renew Their Passport Online?

How Much Will Online Passport Renewal Cost?

Online passport renewals will cost the same as standard passport renewals. However, unlike with mailed applications, you can pay any fees with a credit card (and get those credit card miles for travel). You’ll also save money on postage (which can be significant if you want tracking to ensure your package arrived safely).

To renew online, applicants must upload their passport photo as a digital file. Photos must be unedited. Scanned photos and selfies will not be accepted. Your digital photo must be:

  • No smaller than 54 kilobytes and no larger than 10 megabytes
  • High-resolution (see further rules and suggestions regarding image compression on the State Department website

Many stores offer passport photo services, but not all will provide a digital copy of the images. CVS will send a digital copy of your passport photo to your email for $3.99 on top of the typical $16.99 passport photo service charge while Walgreens includes a free digital copy in its $16.99 price.

While many people prefer the guarantee that their store-bought photo will meet all government requirements, budget-conscious travelers can also opt to take their own passport photo at home. Check out our how-to guide for the most up-to-date sizing and requirements.

How Do I Submit an Online Passport Application?

Travelers can apply to renew their passport through their MyTravelGov account. To create an account, simply sign up with your personal email, create a password, and choose from the required two-factor authentication options. From there, click on “Renew Your Passport” and complete the application within thirty days of beginning.

Applicants do not need to mail in their old passport but be warned—old passports will be immediately deactivated upon submission. Furthermore, other than skipping the time applications would have spent in the mail before reaching the Processing Center, processing times for online renewal are the same as mail-in applications. Online submission takes the hassle out of applying for a renewal but don’t count on it to shorten your wait time.

Carry-on Essentials

Don't Forget

Clothes and Shoes

While packing light is great, there are still a few essentials you need to make sure make it into your bag—think underwear, socks, pajamas, shirts, and pants. From there, you can get more specific based on your destination. Heading to the beach? Throw in a swimsuit. Vacationing somewhere colder? Gloves, hats, and scarves are a must. Keep in mind that clothing can take up a lot of space—if you’re planning on packing in only a carry-on, try wearing some of your bulkier items to free up precious room in your luggage.

Toiletries

Toiletries are another necessity of travel to keep you feeling fresh. You can find the standards—toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant—all available in TSA-approved travel-sized containers. Liquids should be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and fit into a clear, quart-size, zip-top plastic bag. To learn more about TSA rules, see Airport Security Frequently Asked Questions.

Once you have the basics packed, think about your individual routine. Don’t forget things like contact solution, period products, and daily medications. Curating your carry-on toiletry bag down to only essentials will help save space. Your one-in-a-million, go-to cleanser you can’t live without? Definitely throw it in your bag. Your extensive collection of handmade shower melts? Maybe save them for home.

Carry-On Essentials

Whether or not you’re checking additional luggage, there are a few items you should always keep with you. Important travel documents like your passport, ID, boarding pass, insurance cards, credit cards, and copy of your COVID-19 vaccination card should always stay with you in your personal item. Pricey items like cameras, SD cards, and laptops as well as items you may want to have on-hand at your destination like umbrellas, a guidebook, and your itinerary should be stowed safely in your carry-on.

Miscellaneous

Finally, don’t forget to pack items to pass time on the plane. Items like headphones, books, and magazines will keep you entertained for however many hours you’re in the air. Make sure to load up your device with podcasts, music, and audiobooks pre-flight while you’re still connected to reliable wi-fi. Other essentials like ear plugs, sleep masks, and travel pillows make sure you’re able to arrive at your destination well-rested.

Carry-On Bag Rules and Regulations

Attention to TSA regulations is important when packing a carry-on, especially if you plan to skip checking a bag. Liquids are subject to the 3-1-1 rule, meaning they must be less than 3.4oz in volume and fit into a clear quart-sized plastic bag. Some surprising substances, like peanut butter and shaving cream, qualify as liquids under this rule. When in doubt, check the TSA website to see if these restrictions apply to your items.

Alcohol purchased anywhere other than the duty-free shops at the airport are also subject to 3-1-1 regulations and additionally must be below 70% ABV (140 proof), so you may want to check a bag if you plan to bring back a couple bottles of wine as a souvenir.

Choosing the Right Carry-On Bag

Choosing the perfect carry-on bag is essential for maximizing packing space, especially if you plan to pack in a carry-on only. Be aware of airline carry-on size restrictions—US-based carriers typically only limit carry-on dimensions, but some international airlines regulate hand luggage weight as well.

A good carry-on will be lightweight, meet the size restrictions for most major airlines, and be easily maneuverable in a crowded airport.

Hardside Carry-On: AWAY Carry-On

The classic Away Carry-On is a perennial favorite with seasoned travelers, with its 360 spinner wheels, compression straps, and underside grab handle for easy maneuverability. At 21.7 by 14.4 by 9 inches, it meets most major airlines’ hand luggage size limits. The Away Bigger Carry-On can fit even more, but it may be too large to count as a cabin bag on some airlines.

Softsided Carry-On: Eagle Creek 4-Wheel International Carry-On

The  International Carry-On from Eagle Creek is a half-inch smaller than their standard carry-on model—a world of difference when you’re fighting for space in the overhead bin. This soft-sided roller bag is made from recycled weather-resistant fabrics and has an easy-access external zipper pocket.

Extra Small Carry-On: CALPAK Mini Carry-On

The CALPAK Mini Carry-On is just 14 by 16 by 9 inches, just short of qualifying as a personal item on many airlines. This extra lightweight option is perfect for accommodating the weight limits on international airlines, short weekend travel, or as an additional bag for those already checking luggage. Check out our roundup of the ten top carry-ons under 6 pounds for other extra small options.

Carry-On Packing Strategies

The roll vs. fold debate has been raging among travelers for years. While personal preference may have you strongly leaning one way or another, there is no single best practice when it comes to packing your bags. Heavyweight items like jeans and sweaters are best accommodated by folding or by lying flat at the top or bottom of your suitcase. Lightweight items like t-shirts, camisoles, and shorts can then be rolled up and used to fill in the remaining gaps. Small items like socks can be stored inside spare shoes.

You’ll need to get more creative if you’re traveling carry-on only. Wearing your bulkiest items during travel days won’t make for an overly comfy airplane outfit, but it will save you a lot of valuable suitcase space. Packing laundry detergent packets to do a quick wash in the hotel sink or using the hotel’s laundry service can minimize the amount of items you need to pack in the first place.

Make sure you don’t double up on items that are provided at your destination. For example, with the exception of a few European destinations, most hotels will provide a hair dryer in the room or at the front desk. If you don’t see an amenity listed online, you can call your accommodation ahead of time to inquire so you know what items you can cross off your hand luggage packing list.

The Botania Relais & Spa is a sprawling botanical wonderland in which flowering plants, thermal pools, produce gardens, and artfully placed villas welcome guests to a Mediterranean island getaway.

The Location: Ischia, Italy

The Botania Relais & Spa is located on the sunny island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples. Ischia is a roughly 18 square mile volcanic island, with six towns and a rolling landscape that culminates in the central Mount Epomeo. Accessible from the mainland by ferry, Ischia is an ideal weekend trip from Naples.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - View of Ischia, Italy from the Resort
Carol McPherson

The island is known for its sandy beaches, castles, hilly neighborhoods, and for being home to the Fonte delle Ninfe Nitrodi, the world’s oldest spa. The Botania is situated in the town of Forio and is a fifteen minute drive from Ischia Porto, a small port lined with seaside restaurants and tiny shops.

Amenities & Services

Guests will not have to lift a finger during their stay at the Botania. No sooner had a member of my group spilled sauce on her shirt during dinner than a staff member was by her side with a laundry brush and miracle stain remover. From a basket of free sunblock by the pool to flip flops provided in-room for the spa, I couldn’t think of a single thing I’d want that wasn’t already provided for.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Indoor Thermal Baths
Carol McPherson

The standout amenity is unquestionably the thermal baths. There are many thermal spas on Ischia, typically charging a 40-50 euro (about $43-$54 USD) entry fee. The two indoor and two outdoor thermal baths at the Botania, however, are free for guests to use. The indoor baths are part of the onsite spa and don’t require a reservation, although one is suggested if trying to use the baths at peak times.

Other amenities include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Luggage transport between reception and room
  • Shuttle service (upon request) to nearby beach
  • Room service
  • Turndown service
  • Outdoor Pool
  • Indoor gym
  • Outdoor gym
  • Outdoor yoga classes
  • Cooking classes at Nonna Marì
  • Indoor hot springs
  • Outdoor hot springs
  • Botanical garden
  • Spa

The Property

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Reception Area
Carol McPherson

The Botania Relais & Spa is unique in the world of luxury hotels, earning a One Michelin Key rating. The 48 rooms are distributed among 10 villas that are built into an extensive botanical garden. Guests are welcome to explore the garden, which includes outdoor hot springs, hidden picnic areas, an outdoor gym, an amphitheater, and more. The entire property spans 3 hectares, nearly impossible to see all it has to offer in just one visit.

Among the flowering plants and fruit trees there are also produce and herb gardens that supply the resort’s onsite restaurants.

The Rooms

Botania Relais

Each room and suite at the Botania Relais & Spa has an Italian marble bathroom, queen to king sized beds, and outdoor spaces. The rooms are distributed across ten villas, each of which is central to hotel amenities like the restaurant, pool, and spa. Walking paths connect the villas to the main check in area and the rest of the botanical garden.

Room Types Room Size
Suites 55-65 square meters (592-699.6 square feet)

Master Suites 36 square meters (387.5 square feet)
Deluxe Suites 34-39 square meters (366-419.8 square feet)

I stayed in a Superior Room with a garden patio, tucked away behind the path to the pool and bar. The outdoor space was shared with adjoining rooms, but the surrounding walls of vegetation gave plenty of privacy. The interior was spacious, with a small table and seating area, large wardrobe, desk, flat screen television, and king-sized bed. The bathroom was luxurious but still maintained the character of the resort, with a gorgeous blue tiled shower, heated towel rack, and large vanity.

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - superior room with terrace garden view bedroom lighting
Botania Relais

A feature I particularly enjoyed was the ability to control most of the lights from the bedside switch letting me skip the awkward bedtime shuffle across the room to dim the lights. Each side of the bed also offered a small reading light on a maneuverable arm.

The wifi password is not immediately obvious in the room, so make sure to get it from the front desk at check in before settling in for the night.

Dining

The local flavors of Ischia are reflected in the three dining options at Botania, rich in fresh seafood, local produce, and—of course—top-tier pasta.

Il Corbezzolo

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Corbezzolo Restaurant
Botania Relais & Spa

Il Corbezzolo is an upscale Michelin Star dining experience serving southern Italian fare crafted from local ingredients and the resort’s own gardens. Fish here is always fresh, sourced from the catch of the day brought in by local fisherman. Finish off your meal with a sip of rucolino, an arugula aperitif with a savory kick that is distilled right on the island.

The resort’s breakfast buffet is served daily from 7:30am to 10:30 am terrace outside Il Corbezzolo and includes your choice of eggs, side salad, fresh baked pastries and breads, fruit, juice, and coffee.

Il Mirto

Everything on the Il Mirto menu is vegetarian or vegan, earning it the island’s first Michelin Green Star for sustainability. In addition to its meat-free menu, the restaurant also works to eliminate single-use plastics, work with sustainable suppliers, and tailors the menu to center seasonally available ingredients.

Nonna Marì

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - Nonna Marì Restaurant
Botania Relais & Spa

Nonna Marì is the most casual dining option, built around the concept of ‘your grandmother’s kitchen.’ There’s no set menu—guests are invited to join for whatever is on offer that evening, much like dropping by your grandma’s house for dinner and a visit. Nonna Marì also offers cooking classes where you can try your hand at crafting authentic Italian cuisine.

La Grotta Bar

Botania Relais & Spa Hotel Review - La Grotta Bar

La Grotta Bar is built into a cave, serving craft cocktails and light bites in a cool intimate atmosphere illuminated by ambient lighting and decorated with cozy jewel-toned furniture.

Iris Bar is the resort’s outdoor bar option. Enjoy a cocktail with a view of the resort’s heated pool and surrounded by the plant life of the gardens,

Price and How to Book

Room rates start around $330 per night and can be booked on Expedia.

With flight prices on the rise, there’s something appealing about becoming a tourist in your own city. Here are a few ways to have a vacation without ever leaving home.

What is a Staycation?

A portmanteau of the words “stay” and “vacation,” a staycation is a trendy way of saying you’re vacationing without ever leaving the area in which you live. The benefits of a staycation are many, from minimizing stressful travel days to saving money, and with the right planning, these stay-at-home adventures can be just as rejuvenating as a traditional vacation.

How to Maximize Your Staycation: 7 Tips for Planning the Ideal Staycation Itinerary

Although planning a staycation involves fewer logistics than your typical trip, creating a thoughtful itinerary will help you maximize your time off and avoid falling into your normal at-home routine.

Set Boundaries Around Your Vacation Time

It can be easy to slip into familiar routines when you’re in familiar surroundings. To avoid this, set aside time just as you would for a vacation where you’d be traveling. Would you answer that email or make that grocery list on a beach in the Bahamas? If the answer is no, the task can wait until after your staycation. Sticking to a planned itinerary and making concrete plans and reservations ahead of time can help you maintain your vacation mindset.

Try New Foods and Restaurants

Your favorite local burger joint will still be there when you “get home.” A staycation is an opportunity to explore new cuisines or try restaurants that have been sitting on your city bucket list. You may find a new favorite to add to your takeout rotation. Stretch your budget with happy hour deals and early bird specials, or get a sampling of what your city has to offer through a local food tour

Test Out the Tourist Attractions

Travel experts would typically advise against spending time and money in overly touristy areas, but the story differs when exploring your home city. Checking out these cheesy tourist attractions will set a fun tone for the rest of your staycation, and the excitement of your fellow tourists is a great way to see your city with fresh eyes.

Attend Local Festivals and Events

If you’re looking for inspiration for your staycation, plan your itinerary around an upcoming event in your area. Food festivals, concerts, art shows, and marathons abound in the spring and summer. As the weather turns chilly, harvest festivals and holiday markets are plentiful. Smaller local events are often listed on a public activities calendar through the city or can be found on sites like Eventbrite and Meetup.

Book a Walking Tour

Get to know your city deeper by booking a walking tour. These tours are usually guided by local experts who are well-versed in a city’s unique history. These tours can be general or based around a theme, like ghost tours, film location tours, or a historical event like the Boston Freedom Trail. As a bonus, you’ll pick up some local lore to impress any future out-of-town guests. Check out Viator, GetYourGuide, or Tiqets for options in your area.

Set Aside Time for Relaxation

Many travelers forgo relaxation in favor of exploring everything a destination has to offer during their limited stay. A staycation is the perfect chance to grab a day pass and put a nearby hotel spa to good use.

Alternatively, with just a few products, you can turn your home into a hotel-worthy spa and unwind without ever leaving the house.

You Don’t Actually Have to Stay at Home

For a refreshing change of scenery, you don’t have to book a flight. Book a few days at a nearby vacation rental or boutique hotel. This strategy is beneficial for those who live too far out from the nearest city to justify a day trip. It’s pricier than staying at home, but it’s easier to justify the splurge when you’re already skipping traditional travel expenses like airline tickets, luggage fees, and rental cars.

Staycation Inspiration

Building your staycation around a theme is a great way to spark your creativity. Some possible itinerary themes are:

Active Staycation: Sign up for a local 5k, tackle the most popular hikes in your arena, organize an informal pickleball tournament with friends

Relaxing Staycation: Book a session at a local spa or get a day pass for a local hotel spa, get a pedicure and manicure at a local shop, do some yoga in a nearby park, visit a botanical garden

Foodie Staycation: Sign up for a local beer or wine tasting, plan a bar crawl with friends, try the highest-rated restaurants in your area, try a cooking class

Artsy Staycation: Visit the museum on a free public admission day, search for open mic nights at local bars and pubs, attend a film screening, do a public art tour of your nearest city

Renting a car can be the key to unlocking the ultimate freedom during your travels. No need to rely on bus schedules, navigate the local subway system, or worry about rush hour taxi fares. However, not everyone is allowed to hop behind the wheel. Many states, countries, and rental car companies have policies that restrict which licensed drivers are able to rent a car. From young driver fees to maximum age restrictions, here is who qualifies to hit the open road.

Minimum Age Restrictions for Car Rentals

You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in the United States, with the exception of Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah, where the minimum age to rent a car is 18 years old. However, many rental car companies apply a ‘young driver fee’ to renters younger than 25 years old.

According to Hertz, this is because, “statistically, drivers under 25 years old are more likely to be involved in an accident, so rental car companies add the surcharge to help protect themselves from the added risk they are assuming.” Practice your due diligence in price comparison before booking—some companies charge a higher fee than others. For AAA members, certain car rental providers will waive the fee entirely.

International locations also implement minimum age requirements for rental cars, with most destinations setting their minimum age similarly between 18 and 25 years old.

Maximum Age Restrictions on Car Rentals

Here in the U.S., the idea of a maximum rental age is nearly unheard of. But if you’re a senior traveler headed overseas, it’s important to check ahead. Many countries have a minimum and maximum age for renters. Drivers over the age of 70 may face surcharges or not be permitted to rent at all.

Elderly couple driving rental car
Zoran Zeremski | Adobe Stock

For example, Auto Europe’s Web site states that renters in Ireland may not be over age 75, and that those over 70 may be subject to additional fees. (Editor’s Note: An Auto Europe spokesperson tells us that this maximum age does not necessarily apply to all of the company’s suppliers.) On Budget Rent a Car’s Web site, we found maximum age of 85 in Aruba, and on Enterprise there is a maximum age of 75 for car rentals in Montego Bay. Apollo Car Rental in Australia permits renters over the age of 75, but only with a doctor’s note.

Seniors can often evade these restrictions by shopping around, as terms and conditions vary widely from company to company. An 80-year-old traveler looking to rent in Ireland can try booking with Hertz, which permits renters over 75 as long as they’re willing to jump through a few hoops.

According to the policies on their website:

Customers over 75 years are eligible to rent with the following specific conditions:

  • You must drive on a regular basis;
  • You will need to provide to the counter a letter from your insurance company to state that you have not had an accident within the last 5 years, that you hold a current policy of motor insurance with you and that you are currently driving;
  • You will need to provide a current letter from your doctor to state you have been in good health.

An 80-year-old reader reported that she was able to rent a car at the Dublin airport through Dan Dooley Car Rental, a local outfit.

No matter your age, never book a car without reading the fine print. If you’re traveling with a younger companion, you can save money and avoid hassle by naming that person as the driver on your rental contract. Similarly for younger travelers, if a member of your group is a licensed driver over 25 years old, let them handle the rental.

Porter is a Canadian-owned budget airline based out of Billy Bishop Toronto Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport. Launched in 2006, Porter operates flights connecting cities across Canada and the larger North American continent and select overseas and tropical destinations.

The stripped back amenities and baggage policies on Porter’s short-haul North American itineraries can result in big savings. However, are the fares worth it? We flew PorterClassic Standard from Boston to Toronto to find out.

Cost

Round Trip flights from Boston to the closest Canadian city, Montreal, start as low as $165 in PorterClassic Basic. PorterClassic Standard, the next highest fare, is roughly $20 more, and it includes free advanced and same-day changes as well as a carry-on bag.

While specific routes appear searchable on the site, tickets are not always available. For example, a roundtrip flight from Dallas, Fort Worth, to Toronto or Montreal in mid-July returned no options or sold out options.

I paid $141.75 for a one-way flight from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Toronto Billy Bishop (YTZ), which breaks down to $118 for the ticket and baggage and $23.75 in “taxes, fees, and charges.”

Find a breakdown of PorterClassic fare classes and what’s included in the price directly on the Porter website.

Aircraft and Seats

Aircraft

Porter operates short-haul North American flights on De Havilland Canada DHC-8-400 turboprop aircraft. Turboprop aircraft are powered by a combination of gas-turbine engines and propellers and have a typical flight range of up to 1,500 miles (roughly the distance from Toronto to Texas), suitable for connecting Canadian cities and cities in the northern United States. Turboprop planes have lower operating costs than their jet engine cousins, which can then pass on the savings to the customer.

Flying on this type of aircraft felt different from a standard flight. Takeoff felt rougher, turbulence was more present throughout the duration, and the engines were louder than I expected. It’s worth noting that the plane I flew on was not equipped with oxygen masks—not required of flights operated below 35,000 feet—but did include all other standard safety features like life vests and emergency exits.

For long-haul international flights, Porter flies Embraer E195-E2 jets.

Seats

The De Havilland Canada DHC-8-400 has 78 seats with 30 inches of legroom. There are no middle seats, so seat selection is not a huge worry unless you’re very committed to snagging an aisle or a window spot. The seats themselves are barebones, with metal legs and minimal cushioning. A seat cushion is a nice-to-have on any flight, but a definite must-pack here.

The Embraer E195-E2 jets feature 131 seats—16 PorterReserve, 20 PorterClassic Stretch, and 96 PorterClassic seats—with 36 inches, 34 inches, and 30 inches of legroom, respectively.

Food and Drink

Passengers at all class levels must pay an additional fee for in-flight meals, available on flights of 2.5 hours or more operated on Embraer E195-E2 jets. Options vary, but sample menus on Porter’s site include meals such as salmon poke, ham and brie croissants, and chia seed smoothie bowls.

Snacks are available on all flights. Its free beer and wine service, which sets Porter apart from competitors, is available for all fares across all aircraft.

Amenities

Passengers flying on Embraer E195-E2 jets can access in-flight entertainment, including movies and television, and complimentary wi-fi.

Baggage

PorterClassic Basic allows one personal item not to exceed 13x17x6 inches. Fliers in this fare class are not allowed a carry-on bag and are not permitted to use a digital boarding pass, with the exception of VIPorter Venture, Ascent, or First members or passengers on a codeshare flight. Travelers flying Basic can check-in online but must pick up a physical boarding pass once at the airport.

PorterClassic Standard and Flexible Flier receive one free carry-on in addition to their personal item and access to digital boarding passes. Passengers flying PorterClassic Freedom have all previous privileges plus two complimentary checked bags.

Is it Worth the Money?

If you are a savvy traveler and a light packer willing to trade some basic comforts for a better price tag, Porter definitely has deals worth your while. However, even for those just traveling out of a carry-on, there are comparable deals on other carriers that would suit your needs equally well. I’d recommend doing some comparison shopping to ensure you’re getting the best deal paired with the best experience.

Ideal For: Light packers looking to score a great deal.
Less Suited For: Travelers who plan to check luggage and prefer more in-flight amenities.
